Title: iPod Talk
Post by: Beermonkey on July 31, 2006, 11:17:02 AM
As my music collection has as much diversity as a Toby Keith concert, I'm looking for suggestions to add to my collection. If you were going to be stuck on an island with only 10-20 songs, what would some be?

You picked the wrong Hank Williams.  Sr. and III kick ass.  Jr. is lucky can boast two or three decent songs, but the rest is utter shtein.

Everything Hank Williams did is a national treasure.  He's at least as important as Woody Guthrie or Robert Johnson.  His grandson is making very good music these days, too.  I been listening to "Straight to Hell" lately, and it's fantastic.

Yeah, he's great.  One thing I love about America is its folk music.  And by folk I mean, music made by folk for the pleasure of making and hearing it, dancing to it, etc.  Country, bluegrass, blues...all of it.  People like Jack Elliott are national heros imho.

I never said I liked him, just that my tastes need to branch out. In fact, I hate Toby Keith just based on the way he looks. I hate his lips, I want to punch them. I am not a Country fan but am open to some of it.

Maybe instead of "kill yourself" or "launch yourself into the sun", you could mix it up a bit with the occasional "get a vasectomy with a rusty spoon" or a "have an unlubed catheter inserted by someone who was eating habaneros"

try some Tom Waits.

he's had 3 different waves in his career.

if you want the smoother, jazzy acoustic stuff start off with the album Closing Time.

if you want some of the more storytelling, offbeat, beat-poet stuff...go with Rain Dogs

if you want his more recent...really experimental stuff, go with Mule Variations

of that phase Heart of Saturday night is the best for my money...but Closing Time has a couple of classics on it, he's never been a mass market attraction....the irony being that some of his most famous songs were made famous by other people (Ol'55 - The Eagles...Downtown Train - Rod Stewart....Jersey Girl - Bruce Sprintsteen...ect...).

Small Change has Pasties and G String...which simply cannot be missed...for me there's too much to recommend just one.

iPod shuffle 1 gig holds about 240 songs for <$90.  If you want it for travel, working out, etc, it's perfect for that.  And with frequent refreshes of your songs of iTunes, it never gets old.

nothing.  the brand name, thats it.

i got a 512MB mp3 player for $30 at circuit city.  holds about 8-9 full albums at once, enough that i only have to change it every two weeks or so.  you can larger ones, like 1GB-2GB, for less than $100 for sure.  it's just as small as an ipod.

and you don't have to farg with itunes, you basically just plug it into your comp and it acts like a hard drive, you just drag and drop.

that sounds much better....so ipods can sell for so much more simply because of good marketing by apple

how about the batteries in mp3 players...same lifespan before you have to recharge...and what about headphones...can you hook up studio headphones to an mp3 player or do you have to use ear pieces or small walkman type johnsons

Has anyone seen the Microsoft equivalent to the iPod?  I think its called Zune.  Wonder if its any good.   One guy was saying the buttons felt like cheap plastic.

I recently got 4 gig Sandisk Sansa players for both me and the wife-- for less than $90 each.  That's a pretty sweet deal.  They're highly rated, and they have a nifty microSD expansion slot for even more space.  They're a little smaller than the iPod mini, but these also play video.  Actually, in addition to the picture thing, it has an integrated voice recorder, FM stereo and picture viewer.  Love it.

Oh, I should mention how I got the Sansa's on the cheap-- Buy.com had them on sale, then there was a $30 Sandisk rebate, and another $10 off for using the Google checkout option.  If you really wanted to save some cash, you could sign up for a buy.com credit card and get another $30 off (I did that for something else).

Anyway, the point is, if you research it and hold off for a deal, you can do pretty well.

4 gig = how many songs?
Title: Re: Pimp my iPod
Post by: Zanshin on November 16, 2006, 12:20:56 PM
Depends on how large your files are.  I have a mix of WMA and MP3 and I have about 1500 songs or so on it, I think. Maybe more. Generally, I think my file sizes are between 2 and 3 meg each.  I also just got another 512 meg in a microSD card that I'm going to add to it.  You can get up to 2 gig microSD cards, but I found this 512 meg one free after rebate (actually, I'll make a couple of bucks on the deal), so that'll hold me over.

The nice thing about the smaller players, this one anyway, is that they're totally built on flash memory, and not hard drives.  I use it to work out, and I run...so there's no skipping.  It also helps with battery life.  The Sansa goes about 22 hours on one charge.

nothing.  the brand name, thats it.

i got a 512MB mp3 player for $30 at circuit city.  holds about 8-9 full albums at once, enough that i only have to change it every two weeks or so.  you can larger ones, like 1GB-2GB, for less than $100 for sure.  it's just as small as an ipod.

and you don't have to farg with itunes, you basically just plug it into your comp and it acts like a hard drive, you just drag and drop.

i have one similar to that except it takes batteries.  not too bad if you get rechargables...and i just got a 2 GB card i'm going to add to it.

It does power through the USB connection, but you can get a wall adapter for $5 if that's a hassle for you.  It hasn't been for me. The nice thing about the new Sansa player is that you can swap out the rechargable battery when it gets old.  Most other players are integrated.

Aside from the recent problems I've been having with my itunes software, I'm pretty much disappointed with the ipod in general.  I got the video ipod and eventhough I bought a carry case for it, the screen it still pretty scratched up on it and I absolutely hate the controls on it.  It's not even safe to use when you're driving and spinning my finger around in circles trying to get to a song I want to listen to is totally retarded.

i got the sansa johnson

i like it  a lot except for you cant or at least i dont know how to organize my songs...they all just come out in one big list regardless of the type of music...is there anyway to subcatergorize them

also how do you retitle files like inside the mp3 itself

for example in a folder on my hard drive might be this song and i have it shown looking like this:

gangstarr - mass appeal

but after i put it on the sansa mp3 player it may be listed any of a dozen ways for example

103. gangstarr mass appeal
track 1 mass appeal
MASS APPEAL
GanGSTArr
mass appeal hard to earn gangstarr
rap hits mass appeal

i wanna get it so that when i put songs on the mp3 player they show up with just the song name and artist all in the same cased letters ie the way that i set it up on my hard drives...so that i have a standard on my player instead of crap being listed every which way but loose

can anyone help me with this...if they even understand what im saying

Title: Re: Pimp my iPod

my brother just explained it to me

you can 'rename' an mp3 file and the title will represent that name in a folder on your hard drive...but the mp3 player itself recognizes the name within the properties of the mp3 file...so what you have to do is right click on the mp3 file and then go into properties and then the summary tab...and thats where you can change the name to show up on the mp3 player how you want
Title: Re: Pimp my iPod

Im not sure if it works this way on a Sansa, but one thing that annoys the hell out of me is when you have an album with about 10 songs and you want to keep them all together, and one of them is by "artist ft. ____" and it's in it's own seperate category because of the "featuring." It sucks.

My iPod did that.  It annoyed the shtein out of me.

I'm in the process of buying a new mp3 player but I'm done with iPod's.  Two times now I've gotten them and they've broken seemingly out of nowhere.  This second one really pissed me off because how well I took care of it.  I have about 30GB of songs on my computer so I want to get a nice one that isn't made by Apple.

I've been looking at the Toshiba Gigabeat.  A few of my friends have them and really like them.

Yeah, that does suck.  About four or five times a year I get baked outta my head and spend a few hours sifting through all my .mp3 folders renaming the actual file names so that whatever front end app I'm using is picking up a uniform syntax.

no program does a good job of organizing my music files unless I manually change my file library to conform to a standardized naming logic.  It's a pain in the ass, but once it's done it's easy to maintain and whatever program you used spits them out right.

Got here a little late.  Sorry.  The Sansa organizes music largely by the ID tags, rather than the file name. In fact, it really doesn't care about your file structure at all, which took a little getting used to.  At any rate, you'll want to adjust the ID tags, if they're irregular.

And now that 4 gig version is available for under $90 at buy.com, which is a sweet buy.

ive dealt with apple numerous times with the IPOD.  Ill tell you exactly what they will say..

first off,  they will say to do the 5 "R's"....

    *  1. Reset your iPod.
    * 2. Retry with a different USB port.
    * 3. Restart your computer.
    * 4. Reinstall iPod and iTunes software.
    * 5. Restore your iPod.

go to apple.com/support and find the info on how to do that stuff....

if that doesnt work, your only hope is that it is under warranty.   If it is, call them and go nuts saying your IPOD is farged up.  They will send out a box via DHL and you put your IPOD in there and return it.  They will either fix your IPOD and send it back to you or send you a replacement.   Aagain, that is if it is under warranty.

I am in the market for a new mp3 player and went through and read this thread.  I was basically under the assumption that I had to get an iPod because my mother had bought me an iHome for my birthday, but upon further reading I realized you can hook up any mp3 player with a simple "line in" cord that is provided.  I was wondering what people thought of the other mp3 players they bought. Since it has been awhile, most people should have a good idea about their player's worth.  I was specifically interested in the Sansa which IGY had and whichever one Phreak had.  Any help would be appreciated.

Also, since I have owned two iPods previously, I was wondering how difficult it is to transfer files onto the new mp3  considering all of my music is currently on iTunes.

If you bought the files from itunes...then you have to burn them as a music CD and re-rip them in jukebox or whatever....

If you ripped the files yourself, then you can easily convert them to MP3 in the itunes prefs...then you can play them on any other mp3 player

If you manually managed the music on the ipod 2 years ago...then you should be able to just quit itunes, and not eject the ipod.

if you had it synced, you're going to have some trouble.

also, unless you purchased the songs from itunes, then i would just start over anyway.

I googled "disable iTunes" and found this:

QuoteFor those who has ever wondered how to stop iTunes from opening when you connect your iPod, here's an easy solution. Now I know this is very self-explanatory, but there are a lot of people out there who don't see or utilize this. After connecting your iPod to your computer, iTunes will open. On the device/ipod page of your iTunes, uncheck the box that says "Open iTunes when iPod is connected". The next time you plug in your iPod, iTunes will no longer open unless you open it up yourself.

ok so here's the problem...I couldn't attach the iPod because even though I had it checked to NOT auto sync, it still was....and I even tried the holding down control/shift together while connecting and it didn't work. I had to catch it before it started the actual autosync.

So I am now using Sharepod to copy all of my music into a temporary file and then I'll re-install iTunes and get it all back on there.
