Don't know much about him but he ran a non-embarrassing offense with Brissett and Grandpa Rivers and his public speaking ability is better than Doug's so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

Nick Sirianni's ex-QB: Eagles coach has the 'ability to connect with everybody'

If Nick Sirianni requires a reference point for commanding the room with his new team as a 39-year-old rookie coach replacing a Super Bowl winner who played 14 NFL seasons, he can think back to seven years ago.

Sirianni had been promoted to quarterbacks coach by the San Diego Chargers in 2014. He was 32, he had never played in the NFL and he needed to step in for Frank Reich. His starting quarterback, Philip Rivers, was only six months younger than him and had been to five Pro Bowls. His backup quarterback, Kellen Clemens, was two years younger than him and had made 21 starts.

It didn't matter.

"I don't think there's a room that Nick couldn't manage," Clemens said by phone this week.

Clemens played for five teams during 12 NFL seasons, and his last four seasons aligned with Sirianni's time with the Chargers. Clemens has seen his share of good and bad coaches — and he has ideas about what distinguishes the two poles. That's why Clemens, who was surprised by the phone call from the other side of the country inquiring about his former position coach, insisted the Eagles "got the right guy."

"Nick has an ability to connect with everybody," Clemens said. "He does because he cares. And I think that's one of the biggest things that you have to be able to do at that level. You're coaching guys that are in their mid-to-late 30s and you're coaching guys that are in their early 20s. And everybody's at different times in their careers, has different experiences, different expectations, but Nick has the ability to reach everybody, to connect with everybody.

"He's a great motivator. His passion is infectious. When you hear him present, you can't help but get excited — when you hear him speak, when you hear him talk about game plans, things that he likes, what we're trying to do, how we're attacking defenses. You can't help but buy in. Because he's that type of a leader."

What stood out to Clemens was Sirianni's ability to adjust his coaching for each player. Sirianni recognized Rivers' talent and résumé necessitated a certain approach. It would be different in 2015, when he coached a young group of wide receivers. Clemens said Sirianni "managed the room," and that doesn't necessarily require bluster. It required understanding.

"Nick had the ability to treat everybody fair, to treat everybody respectfully, but obviously also not to treat everybody exactly the same," Clemens said.

In the coach-player relationship, respect is a "two-way street," Clemens stressed. Sirianni commanded respect with his work ethic and intelligence, but he also knew how to give respect to the players. That allowed him to nurture relationships.

"I loved playing for Nick Sirianni. Absolutely loved it," Clemens said. "He's incredibly smart. He works really, really hard. He spends time trying to get to know his players — on and off the field. Like, he cares. He genuinely cares about the individual. He values you more than just your ability to contribute on the field.

"But at the same time, even though he is so smart, he's open to suggestions, he's open to feedback, he's always trying to learn and grow. There's no ego with Nick."

The Eagles need Sirianni to ignite a stagnant offense and perhaps fix a quarterback who significantly regressed this season. Rivers didn't miss a game during Sirianni's time with the Chargers and was already far enough along in his career that Sirianni will never be credited for helping to develop him.

Sirianni had three Week 1 starting quarterbacks during his three seasons as the Colts' offensive coordinator, including two who had been accomplished Pro Bowlers. So it would be a stretch to consider Sirianni some kind of quarterback whisperer. But Clemens cautioned against conflating the drilling of quarterback fundamentals with what preparing a quarterback for a game entails. A good quarterbacks coach must know how to mentally prepare a quarterback, and Clemens said Sirianni developed both veterans in San Diego "because of his ability to download and process information."

That leads to questions about how he'll approach the offense. Sirianni doesn't come to Philadelphia with a defined scheme. He's worked for different coaches and in different systems. He hasn't called plays in the NFL. So it's unclear what the Eagles' offensive identity will be under Sirianni.

From Clemens' perspective, this is not a negative. Clemens said a problem with some coaches is they install a scheme based on concepts from previous stops, but the league evolves and roster changes. That's why it's important to hire a coach and not a system, according to Clemens. Sirianni won't need a particular style of quarterback to run a successful offense because he'll be "adapting and adjusting to the circumstances he's in," Clemens said.

"I think one of the things that Nick does that I was really impressed with during our time in San Diego ... is put guys in position to win," Clemens said. "He understands matchups, he understands coverages, he understands protections, he understands the run game — and all of that, all the angles, all the little intricacies that, just to be quite frank, you don't see it from your couch, you don't see it from the press box, you don't. You don't see it, with all due respect. ... There's so much parity in the NFL; the ability to find an advantage, no matter how small, is incredibly valuable and Nick does a great job of doing that on a week-to-week basis. And I think that's one of his strengths (and) what he's gonna do in Philly."

Sirianni will reportedly have Shane Steichen by his side as the offensive coordinator. Steichen also coached the Chargers during Clemens' tenure. In 2016, Sirianni moved to wide receivers coach and Steichen was promoted to quarterbacks coach during a staff reshuffling. Clemens, who went to Oregon and has mentored Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, gave credit to Steichen for how Herbert adjusted to the NFL this season despite having no formal offseason. He believes the relationship between Siranni and Steichen can alleviate the growing pains that often accompany a new coaching staff.

"Great move," Clemens said of hiring Steichen. "They're cut from the same mold — Shane and Nick — when you talk about passion. When you talk about humility, when you talk about just understanding the game at that next level, which not everybody does, but those two do it. They'll be a pretty dynamic duo in Philly as they get going offensively."

It might be ambitious for the Eagles to expect the pairing to work the way it did with Doug Pederson and Reich in 2017, although that's a model the Eagles wouldn't mind recreating. Reich's endorsement of Siranni clearly mattered to the Eagles. Clemens emphasized that Reich brought Sirianni to Indianapolis to join his coaching staff in 2018 and Sirianni learned from Reich.

Even though Clemens was first exposed to Sirianni when the coach was 32 and had only one spent one season as an NFL position coach, he was not surprised by the trajectory that landed Sirianni a head coaching job seven years later.

"Oh yeah, you knew from Day 1 that Nick was a riser. ... Nick, you knew that his trajectory was up — always," Clemens said. "Just because he's a good coach and good coaches rise to the top. They just — they do. So I wasn't surprised when I saw the announcement. Put it that way."

Sirianni has a personality that Philadelphia fans might find endearing. Rivers was renowned for his trash talking.

"Nick is not far behind sometimes," Clemens said.

When wide receiver Keenan Allen burned a cornerback, Sirianni used to let the defender know about it. He exuded passion. But Clemens also spun this characteristic to something bigger: "His players know that he has their back." Clemens said that if he made an error in a preseason game or if something went wrong on the field, Sirianni served as a shield, protecting the player from superiors.

"He was never, ever going to throw me under the bus to make himself look better," Clemens said. "He was the guy who would say, 'No, no, no — that's my fault.'"

That engendered loyalty among the players. Clemens believes that bond is "absolutely critical" for a head coach and can be underappreciated. It's part of the reason Clemens vouched for his former quarterbacks coach this week.

"His ability to connect, and to show respect and value," Clemens said. "He works his tail off, he loves what he's doing and he's damn good at it."

Dave Fipp was announced as the new special teams coordinator for the Detroit Lions on Tuesday, officially ending an eight-year tenure with the Eagles. The Athletic's Bo Wulf first reported on Saturday that the Eagles had granted Fipp permission to talk with other teams.

Fipp was hired by Chip Kelly in 2013 and retained by Doug Pederson in 2016, and he remained in his post throughout Pederson's tenure. Fipp's special-teams units ranked first in DVOA in 2014 and second in 2016. They underachieved (like most of the team) in 2020, finishing 22nd.

"We have a really high standard," Fipp said before the season finale. "I have a high standard for myself and for the things that we get done on special teams. ... It's definitely not been good enough in any area, certainly not mine, that's for sure."

Nonetheless, he's a tough act to follow. Much like the offense and defense, part of the issue was personnel. When Fipp's units were at their best, the Eagles invested in veterans such as Chris Maragos and Bryan Braman for special-teams purposes, and they identified young players such as Trey Burton and Kamu Grugier-Hill to fill major roles. They needed more production from bottom-of-the-roster players this season.

One other way the Eagles can improve on special teams in 2021: Use Jalen Reagor more often on punt returns.

Duce Staley is also expected to join the Lions' coaching staff, according to multiple reports. Staley's career in Philadelphia doesn't require description — he's a revered Eagle who played seven seasons for the team and has been the franchise's longest-tenured coach, initially joining the staff in 2011.

He's a notable loss for the Eagles. Staley, who most recently served as running backs coach and assistant head coach, was respected in the locker room and throughout the organization. That respect didn't lead to a head coaching job in 2016 or this offseason despite interviewing for the position both times. Staley also interviewed for the offensive coordinator job in 2018. The Bears were interested in hiring Staley as offensive coordinator last year, but the Eagles gave him a raise so the request never reached the permission stage.

Nonetheless, the Eagles' unwillingness to promote Staley to head coach in 2016 and 2021 suggests he might be better served advancing his career elsewhere. Staley hasn't interviewed for a head coaching job with another team, so perhaps a change could help his candidacy in future years.

Sirianni is still filling his coaching staff. Jonathan Gannon is the incoming defensive coordinator, Steichen is the incoming offensive coordinator, and the offensive staff will include former Colts passing game specialist Kevin Patullo. (Patullo, 39, was the Jets' quarterbacks coach from 2015 to 2016. He was on Reich's staff in Indianapolis as the wide receivers coach, but changed roles in 2020 to make room for former Eagles offensive coordinator Mike Groh.)

Jeff Stoutland is expected to remain as offensive line coach, which is a major boon for the Eagles. He's been in the role since 2013 and has earned the respect of the Eagles' Pro Bowl trio of Jason Kelce, Brandon Brooks and Lane Johnson. Stoutland has also been critical in the development of Jordan Mailata.

The Eagles are targeting Tracy Rocker for defensive line coach, according to Yahoo Sports. Rocker was recently hired to Auburn's staff and has made his way around the SEC. He's coached at South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn, Ole Miss and Arkansas. He was the Titans' defensive line coach from 2011-13, his lone NFL coaching stint. His son, Kumar Rocker, is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the MLB Draft this year.

The Eagles' front office is losing former Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey, who served as a consultant this season. Dorsey is going to Detroit, where he'll have a bigger, more-defined role. Despite outside intrigue that Dorsey's voice could carry more weight in the Eagles organization, his duties aligned with his consultant title. The Eagles have made a number of front-office promotions during the past two seasons, with Andy Weidl, Ian Cunningham, Jeremiah Washburn, Brandon Brown and Alan Wolking all rising to the director level or higher. General manager Howie Roseman discussed relying on the organization's internal pipeline last offseason after Joe Douglas and Andrew Berry left for new jobs, although that was before a four-win campaign.

I don't really see a situation where he's given a 2021 roster that's better than the 2020 one, so if he even achieves 5 wins I'm going to consider the coaching staff a move in the right direction.

Nothing more vapid than an introductory PC. Of course the media asks him specific questions about the team and of course he has to give vague responses about a roster he hasn't even begun to evaluate.

After a few months he'll probably learn that it's ok to be a fleshpop to some of these reporters and maybe we'll get to see his real personality more.

It was something of an adjustment for me when I passed the age where there were zero players my age or older on the Eagles.

Then that became true of the NFL entire.

Now I'm older than the Eagles head coach.

he was just stuttering and stammering a lot....i mean not great from a public speaking perspective but

1) still better than doug
2) he was previously a position coach in either SD or division III where maybe once or twice he talks 1 on 1 with a reporter, then as colts oc at most hes doing small breakouts with like the 5 people who cover them. this was his first time ever talking on camera to 100+ people with 1000s watching and he was more or less alone in a room at a podium looking at a screen. its weird! i wouldnt read too much into it

the bigger issue for me is howie running and hiding, jeff ranting for 20 minutes about how he loves duce so much then peacing before anyone can ask him why he settled on this guy, and sirianni being on the job for a week and seemingly having no understanding of any of the players. seemed like a guy who couldnt believe he got an nfl job was like still in shock. maybe because...he was.

Nick Sirianni's recruiting days in Philly: How IUP job prepped him for Eagles

Nick Sirianni arrived in Philadelphia this week via private jet, with an SUV waiting on the tarmac to take him to his new office. His trips here 15 years ago were different.

Sirianni coached wide receivers at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a top Division II program located between Pittsburgh and Altoona, from 2006 to 2008. His recruiting territory was Philadelphia. Sirianni's trips started in the school parking lot, where he'd take a car from the state fleet — usually a white Ford Taurus with a blue government tag. It was a lucky day when a newer model was available.

About 90 minutes into the nearly five-hour ride to Philadelphia, he needed to navigate through a mountain range that could be unforgiving during the December and January recruiting season. There were trips that started at 3 a.m. There were times he needed to return to the school for a 9 a.m. meeting. There were no private airports. Just rest stops.

Sirianni and fellow assistant coach Jim Smith, who was then the passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach and is now the defensive coordinator, would set up shop at a King of Prussia hotel to review prospects and itineraries. Smith had experience recruiting in the area and warned Sirianni about Philadelphia traffic, which the native of Jamestown, N.Y. (population of about 30,000), wasn't prepared for on his first visit. He was awestruck by Philadelphia's version of rush hour. General manager Howie Roseman has a lot to cover in bringing Sirianni up to speed, but the Schuylkill Expressway won't need to be on the list.

Sirianni might be new to Philadelphia. Philadelphia isn't new to him. He walked through many of the top area high schools — from those in the city limits to stretches of Montgomery County, up to Bucks County and down to Delco.

"It's awesome to know that he's going to be back in those areas, those places where we used to drive through, those school districts and those neighborhoods," Smith said.

The DII recruiting circuit can be challenging. Sirianni needed to convince Philly-area players, including some who might have hoped for a bigger name, that he offered the best opportunity. More than a decade later, he must do it again.

Sirianni agreed to become the Eagles' coach last week, emerging as a surprise choice to replace Doug Pederson after an impressive interview. Soon after he accepted the job, he sent a message to Lou Tepper, who was the head coach at IUP during Sirianni's three years with the Crimson Hawks.

"I can't thank you enough for giving me Philadelphia as my recruiting area 15 years ago," Sirianni wrote, according to Tepper.

Sirianni owes his start at IUP, in part, to medical sales.

Tepper, who had coached five seasons at Illinois in the early 1990s, left Edinboro for IUP in 2006. After he formed a new staff, his offensive coordinator left for a job in medical sales. Smith, who had moved from linebackers coach to wide receivers coach, was promoted to passing game coordinator.

Tepper needed to find someone to coach wide receivers — and do it on an entry-level salary. Sirianni, who played at Mount Union and worked with the defensive backs for the Division III powerhouse for two seasons, was recommended by IUP assistant D.K. McDonald.

"When he interviewed with us, he blew us away," Tepper said. "Even in a Division II environment, there were 20 people who would have taken that job even at the low pay. ... But he was by far and away the best interviewer."

Sirianni was knowledgeable, confident and prepared. He brought written material, which Tepper said wasn't as common at the time. He controlled the interview despite being only 24. He didn't act like he knew everything, but he showed that he would work to learn anything. Tepper predicted this week that Sirianni came across to the Eagles' decision-makers the same way he did that day to the IUP staff — "smart, energetic, a direct guy."

"Hire him before he leaves the building," then-defensive coordinator Paul Tortorella told the other assistants.

"He hit a home run, basically," said Tortorella, who's now the IUP head coach. "He was knowledgeable. He answered all the questions that he was asked. Very humble. Just really had a way about him that said we can use this guy to help us get better."

Although Sirianni had not coached wide receivers, it was thought that his time working with defensive backs at Mount Union had enhanced his understanding of the position he played in college. It was also evident that he grew up in a coaching family.

"You go into New York and mention the name Sirianni, which one of the guys are they going to talk about first?" Tepper said.

McDonald became Sirianni's closest confidant on the staff. McDonald, an Ohio native who is now the safeties coach at Iowa State, had known Sirianni since his Mount Union days. They even lived together — "coaches not making a whole bunch of money, we were trying to find a way to survive," McDonald said. They were in their 20s with ambition and talent. McDonald was later a groomsman in Sirianni's wedding; Sirianni was in McDonald's wedding, too.

"Hopefully his wife got him to clean up a lot more than he did when he lived with me," McDonald said.

Cleaning came secondary to coaching. Sirianni's best player was Norristown native Ken Witter, who totaled 133 catches for 1,550 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2007 and 2008, finishing his career No. 3 in program history in receptions and in the top 10 in receiving yards.

"He maximized Ken Witter's talent," Smith said.

It wasn't just players atop the depth chart. Roy-Al Edwards, a Media native, redshirted as a freshman in 2007 and spent that year on the scout team. Sirianni coached Edwards as if he played Witter's role on the team. Edwards was supposed to give the defense certain looks. But if Edwards ran 9 yards on a 10-yard route, Sirianni noticed. They watched film of the scout-team snaps, dissecting every one. They went to the racquetball court to catch tennis balls with one hand to work on hand-eye coordination.

"I'll be honest: He was the best coach I ever had, and I'm not just saying that," Edwards said.

One of Edwards' teammates was cornerback Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, a DII All-American who was a 2010 fourth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys.

"The way that you practice made me a better player," Owusu-Ansah once told Edwards.

"That's only because of Coach Sirianni," Edwards responded.

Sirianni's duties, at least in his eyes, didn't end with coaching. There was a running joke among the coaches that he also fancied himself as a trainer. Sirianni, who suffered a bad calf injury in college, would have his receivers perform an ankle stretch he developed that included resistance bands. He was convinced it could reduce high-ankle sprains. The effectiveness of this part of his repertoire remains up for debate more than his ability to develop receivers.

"He had a treatment that was off the wall," Tepper said. "It was kind of his own home-brewed treatment, and he believed in it sincerely. Our trainers kind of looked at him cross-eyed, but they allowed him to use it with his receivers. And sure enough, it was effective. ... He got ripped a little bit about not only being a wide receiver coach but being a trainer as well — an ankle trainer."

"It actually worked," Tortorella said. "But you had to follow it from A to Z. The players were looking at him like he was crazy."

"He swore by it," McDonald said. "I don't know if it was medically proven that it necessarily worked. I think it was more of a placebo effect than anything."

Regardless, it was an example of the way Sirianni thought about his players. Multiple people who were interviewed remarked how much he cares about those around him and the effect that had on the players and coaches. McDonald noted that Sirianni wasn't a "cookie-cutter coach" — the way he connected went beyond coaching.

Edwards tore an ACL, an MCL and a meniscus during his second year on campus. He lived five hours from family and faced a long recovery.

Sirianni waited for Edwards at the hospital. Sirianni brought Edwards to his house and watched over him, making sure Edwards ate and recovered as required.

"I never had a coach care so much," Edwards said.

Before Edwards arrived on campus, Sirianni arranged a meeting for him with Witter at the Bahama Breeze in the King of Prussia Mall to make sure Edwards would have a mentor and familiar face at IUP.

"When Nick left," Smith said, "(the wide receivers) room suffered a big blow because they loved him, man."

Sirianni was never shy about the possibility of leaving. He encouraged his players to dream big — even at a DII school. It might require outsized ambition to think one will go from wide receiver at IUP to the NFL, but it takes a similar ambition to go from coaching wide receivers at IUP to head coach in the NFL.

"He would talk about it because that was a goal of his," Edwards said. "He would say, 'If it's a goal of yours to get to the NFL, I'm going to try to get you there. Because it's a goal of mine.'"

Sirianni developed a relationship with Todd Haley that stemmed from a chance encounter at a western New York YMCA during his college playing days. When Haley became the Kansas City Chiefs' coach in 2009, Sirianni wondered whether he should reach out. Smith told him to send an email. Haley responded the next day. They eventually met at the combine that February to discuss a quality control job. Sirianni prepared for the interview with the other IUP coaches, breaking down offensive protections.

"They're hiring you as the quality control — they're not going to want you to come in there and install their protection!" Smith told him. "They want to meet you, know you can work."

Sirianni earned a job offer. His colleagues weren't surprised. Tortorella had suggested that IUP needed to hire Sirianni before he could leave the building during his first interview, and his conviction only strengthened during Sirianni's three years with the program. Tortorella had worked at IUP for 11 years before Sirianni arrived and had seen coaches advance to the NFL. He made another strong declaration when Sirianni's chance came.

"He's on his journey now," Tortorella said at the time. "He's going to be going to places."

Tepper had a strict policy that coaches on the recruiting trail had to wear a coat and tie during school visits.

"Nick was always dressed to the T, man," Smith said. "He used to have this gray pinstripe suit that he wore."

They were meeting at Strath Haven High in Delco to try to convince a wide receiver who had a competing offer as a preferred walk-on at Penn State. Smith had been recruiting the prospect and wanted Sirianni to get time with him, too. It was an unseasonably warm Thursday afternoon and the last visit on their schedule. Smith turned to Sirianni and said they should ditch the jackets. Sirianni was reluctant to go against the rules.

"It's both of us," Smith said.

"If you're going to do it, I'll do it," Sirianni said, according to Smith.

After all, Tepper was on the other side of the state. How would he find out?

Except the IUP coaches weren't the only ones visiting that day. They bumped into a Penn State assistant, which in itself could flummox any recruiter from a DII school. But the competition was less of an immediate concern than the fact that the Nittany Lions assistant had once worked for Tepper.

He exchanged pleasantries and told them to say hello to Tepper. He added that when he coached at Illinois, the assistants needed to wear a coat and tie on the road.

"He must be getting easy on you guys," the assistant said of Tepper.

Sirianni and Smith looked at each other thinking, "He's not going to tell Tep, right?"

"So we go in and we see this kid and come back out and Nick was so nervous about Coach Tepper finding out about whether we had our coat and tie on," Smith recalled with a laugh.

In the room, though, Sirianni hit the right notes. He outlined the opportunity at IUP. He discussed how the player would be coached. He showed why he and IUP offered the best fit for someone from the Philadelphia area who had other options.

It worked. That player was Edwards.

Fourteen years later, this much remains true: Sirianni could always nail the interview.

It's no secret that the Philly sports media are a collection of cynical bullying iceholes.  That's why I cringed several times yesterday.  The guy seems like a nice, even-tempered man but he has no clue about what he's wandered into.  I don't see any way Lurie could have prepared him for what's coming and maybe in the end it really won't matter.  If he's successful he will stick around and if he isn't, the jackals will be there to tear him to pieces.

This period is a test for Sirianni, but failing the test doesn't seem like it would be a firing offense. It would be one strong piece of evidence going toward firing him in the future, if next year doesn't go well for him.

They did can Chip and Doug quicker than most people expected, so it's not out of the question though.

Philly fans (and media) aren't good at accepting that there's a gray zone between "everything is amazing"/"we love you" and "everything is horrible"/"fire this prick". But the truth is there's maybe five fanbases max that feel good about their team right now. 49ers, Ravens, Lions (only because of low expectations), Bears (only because they are trending up).... Texans maybe because of Stroud? Everyone else is farging miserable.

I have never been a fan of Sirianni but Pencil Dick Howie and The Theatre Usher can't go unscathed here. The lack of secondary talent that returned (once again we all know why No More Plays Slay and Crumbleberry were not snatched up) and the stubborness to acquire/draft quality LB's is now biting them in the ass.  Matt Patricia?  Need we even discuss that move.

Is this just Super Bowl defeat hangover by this organization?  Possibly but this all stinks to high heaven.

Moments like this remind me of All the President's Men and Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook) meeting in the dark underground parking lot with Woodward (Redford):

QuoteThey bugged offices, they followed people, planted false press leaks, passed fake letters... they canceled Democratic campaign rallies, they investigated Democratic private lives, they planted spies, they stole documents... and now don't tell me that all of this was the work of little Don Segretti.

The Patricia hiring more than anything should have been the first pull on Siriani's leash. He's a bum that is openly hated by someone that's supposed to be a big part of your defense. He brought nothing of value to the team, and has done nothing to stop them from cratering the season away now that's he's officially in charge of the defense.

The defense needs a complete overhaul. Howie's philosophy of spending all the money on the pass rush seems to hit a snag when receivers are wide farging open on every play.

Jordon Davis is turning into a disaster, please remind us of the last significant thing he's done, anyone someone? and hopefully Carter just hitting the freshman wall.  Fletch, love the man but the end is here.  Sad shot of BG early in the game on Sunday on one knee on the sideline gasping for air. Sweat has been in witness protection program all season, well he has become the new "It's always him".  This has become the tragic fall from grace.

Marcus Hayes called it last February, "losing Gannon isn't just bad news for the Eagles.  It is catastrophic.  Lurie and Roseman know it".

Two words:

DENNARD WILSON

AJ's PC yesterday was good. He addressed everything and it seems like McLane and of course Marcus Hayes were wrong. I don't recall the last time Hayes was right about anything honestly.

The Seattle play was a player improvisation and Sirianni took the heat for it with the "we were going for a PI call"

And AJ mentioned the disastrous sequence from the AZ game (and Kelce did too on his podcast) and it was poor execution. Acho broke down the video and showed where the plays failed which was consistent with what AJ and Kelce said.

So I don't buy the fractured locker room talk that the Inky was putting out there. I believe what the players said about it being frustration with losing and zesty play.

Can't imagine any coach has ever been fired after an 11 or 12 win season.

I'd probably give him one more season with new coordinators.

At least.  Jesus Christ, the guy has three years as HC, three playoff appearances, one SB appearance...the foaming at the mouth is ludicrous.

This is nonsense. Gannon was and still is a terrible defensive coach. So is Patricia, maybe moreso, but let's not get revisionist on Gannon.

The offense is underachieving bigtime, and it's almost all on coaching. The defense is coached poorly, but the players are having a terrible year -- even a good coach would be struggling to get production out of a D-line that looks out of shape, a secondary that looks old and slow, and a LB corps that is below NFL replacement level quality.

I didn't think there was a football reason for demoting Desai. He was outclassed in the Niner and Cowboy games. This is different from being dragged by Tyrod Taylor and the Cardinals. Seemed like an ill-advised panic move. At least Desai has time to grow into the role. Everyone knows what Matty P is, and he's not getting any better.

I usually don't read Marcus Hayes because when I have he's seemed like a hack who tries to get clicks by stirring the pot and creating controversy. I imagine up until a few weeks ago the last coupe of years must have been tough for him, maybe good times ahead though.

Nope. He's sucked since the days of being on Daily New Live - which was about 20 years ago now.

Probably the laundry guy that comes around and collects clothes after practices and games, and gets some inside info. And it's his brother in law that drives he laundry truck to where his sister works in cleaning. She can pretty much tell by the smell of each players jock strap what's goin down, and she ain't afraid to give Marcus the dirt, so to speak, if she gets her usual double mocha latte out of it.

How Sirianni dealt with adversity in each of his three seasons.

2021: Took responsibility away from himself. Adversity was successfully overcome via this method.
2022: Faced zero adversity until second half of Super Bowl. No time to adjust, so adversity not overcome.
2023: Acted like a baby, gave increased powers to Matt Patricia, and put a worse product on the field for five consecutive weeks. Whatever the opposite of overcoming adversity is, this is it. Nick is adversity's bitch right now.

The school where I coach soccer is looking for a new Varsity football coach.

"Dear Nick,

Aloha! My name is Bob.  Do you like palm trees, white sandy beaches, beautiful blue ocean, mai tai's?  Have I got a job for you!"

If the Eagles want to be competitive they need to fire Nick, period. Promote Patricia to HC. Let Howie magic rebuild talent for 2-3 years.

Harbaugh would be my #1 choice to replace Sirianni.

John Fox lost the SB in 2013 then lead the Broncos to a 12-4 record and first round bye the following season where they were eliminated by the Colts. He was fired the day after. Not unheard of but I think they give Sirianni another season unfortunately.

I am starting to really dislike The Theatre usher and pencil dick.  Howie out there brother-in-lawing it with the players as they trudged into the locker room after the game made me sick.

He needs to go but High School Harry will be our HC next year.

one of the most inexplicable and biggest coaching failure this year by sirriani was abandoning the rpo...i know hurts was banged up but from new England to tampa it was non existent

I dont know if it was the new contract and the team didnt wanna put a 250 million dollar QB in harms way but hurts is not a starting QB in the league as a drop back passer...the RPO is the only thing that allows him to consistently move the ball i dont care if his back gets broken on the first series is has to be the basis of any offense that jalen is running

That is true. It had to be due to Hurts being hurt.

Speaking of Nick - according to Russini he's coming back. Howie and him are making calls for new coaches.

Yeah was just about to post her latest

" Nick Sirianni will meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie and will be expected to have a plan for how he is going to improve the Eagles. This will include a pitch on potential new coordinators and assistant coaches, per sources. This is why coaches around the league have been contacted."

If he boots Johnson will Jalen get in his feelings?

Will he refuse and Johnson becomes Nick's version of Press Taylor?
Title: Re: Nick Sirianni - Head Coach

it depends how much power sirianni is willing to relinquish

if he wants a top OC, which is what theyre going to want to see, he basically needs to hand the keys to the offense to that guy. if he wants a veteran assistant (not frank reich, but like frank reich) to help him with his offense, im not sure thats gonna over well.

big picture i actually think consistently reinventing the offense is not a bad strat. like, the eagles came up with a new plan in 2022 and almost won the super bowl. then everyone caught onto it. so hire a brainiac OC, catch the league off guard, let him go for a head coach job, repeat the step. like todd monken invented a new offense in bmore this year, seems to be working for them. mccarthy changed up dallas' offense. same with lafluer in GB. buffalo fired its OC midway through the year. i can go on.

Post sb coordinator pickings were a bit slim. There are some good names out there right now.

Hope so. Sirianni's a goofball so the only person Hurts is accountable to is AJ Brown.

I don't see him dying on that hill. He's not Doug.

Young hotshot for OC. Someone like Riverboat Ron for DC. Crusty vet who isn't going to set the world on fire but understands what it takes to build the bones of a defense and can stabilize that situation and mask what is likely to be an underwhelming back seven for some time.

That said, I bet some of the contacts Howie & Lurie are poking are for a potential HC job.

I bet at least one HC gets hired before we even know for sure if Sirianni is coming back. The Eagles are always slow on the draw this time of year.

QuoteDarius Slay isn't known for shying away from the spotlight, and he didn't mince words on Wednesday when talking about his former position coach, Dennard Wilson.
"I think he would have made a lot of difference," Slay told The Inquirer's Marcus Hayes. "He was loved by us. I thought, for sure, he should have stayed."
Pretty cut and dried, right? Slay said Wilson in Philadelphia as defensive backs coach or defensive coordinator would have been fine "either way," but the coach was fired in the offseason. Why? Well ...
The hiring of Sean Desai and the Eagles' defensive tailspin have been well-documented this season. And, as Hayes writes, Wilson and Jonathan Gannon's departures "left a vacuum of accountability."
