If you can't see that Jesse Owens was a better athlete than one of the best basketball players...all I can say is, proximity bias.  You watched Jordan, so you think he's the greatest.

Those guys, Jordan included, were all iconic giant cultural forces in ways that Serena will never be, but in terms of pure athletic dominance over the rest of her sport, Serena is up near the top. Her case is somewhat weakened by Steffi Graf being just about as dominant in her time.

From that list, Jim Brown is the one who strikes me as the most dominant. He tore the sport wide open in a way never seen before or since, and the difference between him and the rest of the league was enormous. Jordan was the best NBA player I've ever seen, but the on-court difference between him and the other superstars was never as enormous as for someone like Brown or Williams.

Jesse Owens had that level of dominance, but it only lasted about a year. Not sure if it's really his fault because that was the nature of track and field in the 30s, but he didn't have the chance to be dominant for an extended period of time like Usain Bolt was able to do recently.

Other ones who come to mind are Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Phelps, and Tiger in his prime.

Jesse Owens was competing against Adolf's finest.  He was a spectacular athlete for his time and one of the greatest but Carl Lewis matched his accomplishments.  No one will ever come close to Jordan.  He's far and away the best pure athlete ever.
