Johnson's a stud when he's healthy but he was bad last season...even when he was healthy he didn't look right. Big risk on Houston's part because of the contract.

Do they still have no GM?
Title: Re: Around The NFL - 2020

I'm imagining the Cards GM trying to keep a straight face when that trade was offered.

Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on March 16, 2020, 02:35:58 PM
Yeah BOB is their GM - Texans fans here are losing their shtein.

Ravens trade Hayden Hurst and a 4th to ATL for a 2nd and a 5th
Title: Re: Around The NFL - 2020
Post by: Diomedes on March 16, 2020, 02:41:25 PM
That Ravens TE trade is puzzling.  I guess a 2nd was too hard to turn down.  Hurst and Andrews were a pretty good combo for Jackson, and Hurst is not expensive.
Title: Re: Around The NFL - 2020
Post by: QB Eagles on March 16, 2020, 02:50:39 PM
You never know what DeCosta plans to turn that 2nd into. We could be only seeing part of the move.
Title: Re: Around The NFL - 2020
Post by: Diomedes on March 16, 2020, 02:53:56 PM
I guess the deal is, they rarely put both Hurst and Andrews on the field at the same time.  Boyle is a very good blocker, which they need every snap, so the value of having two good pass catching TEs is limited.  They bumped into Atlanta, who just lost Hooper, and got a 2 out of it.  Probably smart move.
Title: Re: Around The NFL - 2020
Post by: Munson on March 16, 2020, 02:57:58 PM
Yeah Andrews looks like the real deal, prob just figured they could get an extra high draft pick for a dude that splits time on their team
Title: Re: Around The NFL - 2020
Post by: SD on March 16, 2020, 03:18:35 PM
Andrews is a stud, if he stays healthy he's a top 5 TE. Boyle's a complete TE, Hurst's talent was being wasted.

-they are paying him 30 bones and hes a washed up has been

lock it in saints/bucs snf week 1

i wouldnt go that far...but the bucs will max out and the saints probably will too. falcons and panthers will barely get any traction. cowboys, eagles and giants will all get 13-15 games between them.

cbs paid romo all that money so he could do...like chiefs broncos or something

I' be interested to know Howie's thinking on Slay. I'm sure he wants to get either a solid CB or WR nailed down before the draft and he finally has decent cap space and draft capitol for a trade. But he says he also wants to go younger and Slay is 29. On he other hand Slay has only missed 5 games in the last 6 years and when vets want a trade from their current team they'll often take a little less to get out. Seems the scales are kind of even.

Love to see Alshon traded for Gurley. With Jordan Howard gone it makes good sense for 2 teams looking to get rid of an unwanted player while each gets to mitigate the cap hit.

Sounds to me like Wentz needs coddling, or the team thinks he does, and they want to stock the WR corps with kids who learn to play with Wentz...

I kinda buy it, kinda don't.

They can't be rid of Desean or Alshon, can't afford another legit WR this year...so what else they gonna do but go young?

They probably want to go with a young receiver because the remaining free agent WRs are trash... I mean Agholor was already picked up, that's how close to the bottom of the barrel we are.

Josh Gordon is available if they want an addict who might play a couple of weeks.

This bit at PFT about Romo's negotiation with Jones and Parcells is instructive:

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/03/27/tony-romo-wont-discuss-cbs-contract-recalls-playing-hardball-with-jones-and-parcells/

QuoteRomo had been with the Cowboys for three years but had never thrown a pass in a regular-season game. The Cowboys thought they could get Romo to sign an extension for a $500,000 signing bonus, but Romo demanded a $2 million signing bonus and got it.

"Jerry Jones and Bill Parcells sit me down right before a preseason game," Romo recalled. "They're like, 'We need you to sign this deal for $500,000.' I'm making the league minimum, $250,000 or so. I told them, 'The only way you'll play me is if you have something invested in me that makes you want to see if I'm worth it.' I told them $2 million. 'For that, I feel like you'll want to put me in a game to see.' Believe me, I didn't want to do it. It was as nerve-wracking a situation as I've ever been in."

Romo said that Jones and Parcells agreed, and he got his $2 million signing bonus.

Balls.  Always bet on yourself.

he could wind up in the studio with his son, who joined nbc. in the new tv deal there will be 16 extra games, so there will be at least 1, maybe 2 new packages they can sell. nbc could get 1 of those and put cris on it.

some nuggets i picked up from pouring through the schedule:

-dallas leads the way with 11 national games. kinda low for them. no has 9. tb/sf 8.5. kc 8. gb 7.5. phi/ne 7. bal/sea 6.
-the rams maxed out on PT games (5) but have no other national window games. hmmmm.
-the chargers are tenants in their stadium, dont open up in a full national window and only have 1 (possible) pt game. yikes. the rams and raiders both get early primetime games to open up their fancy stadiums. the chargers didnt even get the late week 1 mnf.
-vegas has 4 locked in home primetime games and 1 other possibility. 0 road. never seen this before. league really doing them favors.
-nov 15 the masters will air a late morning/early afternoon final round. all 100 nfl games on fox. then i assume 100% of the country has one of 3 games at 405 on cbs, while fox still airs its normal 425 game. good day to stay on the couch.
-the wash team has 0 primetime games and 1 national game -- tg against dallas. this has been proven to be the highest rated window of the year regardless of opponent. nfl playing to that.
-the bills have more primetime games than the giants
-detroit also has 0 schedule primetime games. why are they still leading off tg?
-4/5 of pitt's national window games are on the road. sad yinzer.
-all 3 viking primetime games are on the road. sad melvin.
-5/6 seattle national window games are at home. perfect they get this when they cant even benefit from it.
-lot of pressure on the eagles/dallas week 16 game to be good. it was put there for a reason.

tess just didnt have the chops to carry a big time nfl broadcast. hes good on college and boxing. very hokey and carnival barkery which plays well to those, but the nfl is all confidence and gravitas. the game sells itself. he was trying to sell you on the game.

booger is actually very good in studio. might never be ready for the booth but he certainly wasnt ready for the big leagues. espn just really put everyone in a bad spot with this thing.

feels like they have 2 options
1) fowler-herbie IF there is no college. which is likely. buys them a year to figure things out.
2) levy-riddick-orlovsky. this i think would be a good booth but it might only be for a year since there will be a lot of movement with announcer contracts in 2021.

It's like a video of civilizational collapse. Also do yourself a favor and keep the mute engaged.

I'd kinda like to see the LA fans mass defect to the Chargers. Sure that franchise has plenty of issues too, but they gotta be more lovable than this Kroencke product.

It didn't take long for the first player to sign on for the official Opt Out deal rather than get Covid for the team:  Canadian medical doctor / 6th round pick / starting RG from the Chiefs, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif decided $150k stipend and contract tolling to 2021 > 2.3M and Covid.  His statement:

Soyez prudents,
Laurent Duvernay Tardif

he also posted it in English, pour les Americains,

QuoteGiven the worldwide sanitary crisis we are currently experiencing, the NFL and the NFLPA have agreed to significant health and safety protocols to protect the players. There is no doubt in my mind the Chiefs' medical staff have put together a strong plan to minimize the health risks associated with COVID-19 but some risks will remain.

This is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make in my life but I must follow my convictions and do what I believe is right for me personally. That is why I have decided to take the Opt Out Option negotiated by the League and the NFLPA and officially opt out of the 2020 NFL season.

Being at the frontline during this offseason has given me a different perspective on this pandemic and the stress it puts on individuals and our healthcare system. I cannot allow myself to potentially transmit the virus in our communities simply to play the sport that I love. If I am to take risks, I will do it caring for patients.

I want to thank everyone in the Kansas City Chiefs organization for their support and understanding.

Stay safe,

Laurent Duvernay Tardif

I'd be shocked if Kamara moved. Loomis always seems to pull cap room out of his ass for their marquee players. Second tier guys like Sproles and Jenkins are available, but Kamara (although at a less valuable position than guys like Lattimore) is a cut above.

Plus it's somewhat of an open secret that this season is it for Brees, and I'm sure they'd like to keep their other offensive stars in place for the new QB (as well as for their last playoff run in the Brees window).

Then again Payton is arrogant enough to hand it off to Taysom Hill as a feature back.

I don't know much about the Jags O-line but his yards per carry has been atrocious over his whole career. Like near the bottom of the NFL over the last 3 years combined.

I've seen plenty of Mills he has no range. He excels in short space and red zone coverage. Not sure why they didn't just leave him at cb and put Maddox at safety. I get the safety position he's playing is essentially a 3rd cb but he'll have to occasionally fill in in the box and I just don't see him as a physical presence. In short Malcolm should have been re-signed. I really hope where da farg is Wallace can fill in but that's a stretch for a rookie.

Agreed on Wallace. He's gotten hype because of the BDawk/Clemson comparison so I hope he turns into a player.

I like Mills...he never shied away from contact as a corner really. I think he will be alright. But yeah Jenkins should have been retained.

Titans 2020 first round pick Isaiah Wilson seems like a winner.

He was arrested for DUI last night after doing donuts and smashing into a wall. This offseason he has already done two separate stints on the covid-19 reserve list, got caught jumping off a balcony to get away from the cops breaking up an illegal party, and is way down the depth chart due to being out of shape and resistant to coaching. Our old buddy Dennis Kelly is miles ahead of him.

Good for Kraft, honestly. The state prosecutors played it up like an international sex trafficking ring and called it "modern day slavery", when really it was just some old Chinese ladies doing consensual rub n tugs. Florida used Kraft to gin up publicity for their case, with the expectation that he would quietly accept their plea deal offer and pay $10,000 to make it go away.

Instead Kraft called their bluff, refused the deal, and pointed out that the video surveillance was unconstitutional. The case that was designed to be good publicity for state prosecutor's political career started to become a real liability. So of course charges were dropped, not just against Kraft, but against all the defendants. They were lucky that a billionaire was involved and refused to back down, when he very easily could have (and would have saved him a bunch of money).

Can't help but notice that these sports outbreaks seem to be limited to within teams. Although players on different teams come in close contact during games, the wide open air of arenas/stadiums appears to be a *much* different transmission vector than team offices, locker rooms, buses, pregame meals, etc. It's not so much that the games are dangerous, it's all the stuff around them.

He did run straight off again, though Covid rules about fraternizing after the game, and his apparent, final-drive confusion about how many downs you get to gain 10 yards in the NFL, may have had more to do with it than his poor sportsmanship.

This was also the first time Brady lost to the Bears.

Nick Foles' career is so strange.

I wonder if we'll get to the point where teams start treating QBs like they do RBs. Sure, spend the money on Mahomes or Wilson, but Goff? Stafford? Kirk Cousins?! You're stuck with that guy for how many years if he doesn't pan out, and now you can't afford all your defensive players when their contracts are up. Now you didn't win anything, but he sure did put up some nice stats in a league that's designed to give quarterbacks really nice stats.

NE
BUF
IND
OAK
LAC

TB
NO
CHI
SF
LAR
SEA
ARZ

Most of those are based on need. Except OAK. That's bc Mayock and Gruden like vets/popular names. Josh Jacobs shouldn't have his carries messed up by him.

If Howie is truly becoming like McLane says he is then maybe he signs him but cutting Miles' carries would be dumb too.

Rams, Colts and Pats are my top three to sign him.

It's not that weird. He was never able to get much separation even when he was good. He was just a ball vacuum with great hands, an insane ability to contort his body, the size to win jumpballs, and an elite ability to sell pushing off as a legitimate football move. Then he got some severe leg injuries and his ability to separate dropped to near zero. Then he tore his Achilles which is often a career ender at the skill positions and limits his ability to outmaneuver corners at the moment the ball arrives.

The weird thing would be if he came back to the NFL and achieved above-average production. He looked cooked in 2017.

new tv deals are close. looks like roughly the same thing as the current set up except

-thursday games go exclusive to amazon/twitch/nfln. this will bring the game quality down but id still reckon they have 1 each week. so expect more jags-titans and jets-dolphins type of stuff though inevitably a good game or two or will sneak through.
-mnf will be on abc for most if not all games and have some kind of flex scheduling for later season games
-abc will get in the super bowl rotation. 10 year deals, each network gets 2 super bowls then the last 2 are auctioned off

Here's what I don't get about the NFL and other entities....let's say, hypothetically, I stream a game.  They must know I've done so, if not in granular detail, right?  Millions of people streaming/stealing the broadcast is not exactly secret.  I'm not paying for cable, but if I was in the right market I could be seeing the game for free....and they wouldn't have a problem with that.  Either way, I'm seeing the ads that pay for the whole shebang.  So why not just include the numbers of streaming viewers in your count, report that to your adversitisers in additoin to the numbers of conventional viewers, and give up the expensive and frustrating cat and mouse game.  Let the people ahve what they want and learn how to count differently.  Free money.

the streaming numbers numbers are a lot less than you think. plus, its 1 stream everyone is sharing. lets say its coming from seattle. youre in baltimore. not every ad is going to apply. basically no ads are going to apply if youre in europe or asia watching (which where a lot of the viewership comes from).

advertisers dont pay for anyone over 50 years old, theyre not paying unless they have the data on who is watching and thats the antithesis of a streaming audience. they surely have a rough idea how many people stream games, its not factored into anything, but its not significant enough to get them to give a shtein

I wish him well.  Great guy, heck of a running back and a good running backs coach.

That said, he evidently turned down the OC slot because Doug wouldn't give up the play-calling duties 10 minutes after he won the Super Bowl.   Maybe his inability to get the big gig is on him and not on Lurie and Roseman?

2) duce can be failing to move up because of pre conceived notions related to his skin color
3) people have an opinion about this because he used to be a rb for the eagles. if this was duane staley with no eagles resume, nobody would give a shtein

ted williams was in his 50's when he first hit the nfl...he was done before he started as any kind of real nfl coach and had no connection to the eagles....duce was 35 an eagle legend and started basically right after retirement with his long time franchise and 10 years in couldnt get a sniff of anything...i suspect duce is a really really bad coach because the people that know and love him were like farg off....

altho the optics of this current white power offseason by lurie is certainly helping duce's case as far as his situation at least being racially tinged

duce has been with the eagles for what like 20 years?  can't blame him for leaving.  but yeah it's more likely that he's a shtein coach as well.
Title: Re: Around The NFL - 2020
Post by: QB Eagles on January 26, 2021, 11:21:49 AM
They offered him OC in 2018, which he turned down because Doug calls the plays, so it's not like they've been straight shteinting on him all these years. They weren't about to change playcallers from the guy who just won the SB. Bringing in an offensive coach again guaranteed at least a couple more years of not calling plays, so he's gone.

They know Duce better than anyone and I doubt they would have let him walk if they thought he was ready to be a great HC.

duce has no shot to be a coach thats my point. hes been in the league for a while now, hasnt elevated past position coach. nobody else wanted him. eagles let him go and he winds up on a tanking team working for a joke head coach with the exact job he had before. thats just what he is -- ted williams jr.

why we're talking about him is because he was also a great player for the eagles and no other reason

Sometimes you live under the shadow of a GOAT.   If Lewis Hamilton wasn't the greatest ever, Max Verstappen would be winning a lot of races.  He's the second best driver, and in most any other time, would be the best.

I'm not sure Hamilton is a better driver than Verstappen. Hamilton has a better car. Likewise, I think Watt was better than Donald this year (including in their games against the Eagles). Donald was still excellent, but I think he benefitted from his higher name recognition and inertia.

The NFL salary cap is going to drop in 2021, the result of COVID-19-related revenue losses last season, but across the league there's optimism that next year, revenues will rebound and the cap will once again climb.

The biggest reason? It's not that stadiums will be full — or at least close to full.

It's because the NFL is close to finalizing its new broadcast deals that will be worth billions annually.

What will the new deals mean for the way we watch football? And what are the financial implications for the league, its teams and the players? The Athletic's Lindsay Jones checks in with our sports business reporter, Dan Kaplan, who has been covering every aspect of these deals and has answers.

Before we get into the meat of this conversation about what the football-watching experience will be like into the next decade, let's get caught up with where the negotiations stand. Dan, what is the latest on talks between the NFL and the major networks, especially Disney/ESPN? And what sort of timeline are we looking at for the TV deals to be finalized?

It's little secret the NFL is far down the road negotiating broadcast contracts with NBC, CBS, Fox and Disney's ESPN. The league is looking at anywhere between a 50 percent-to-100 percent increase from their current fees, which would net the NFL an annual amount over $14 billion in the best-case scenario. It may be a matter of weeks, if not less, from what I am hearing. And yes a lot of attention has been paid in the last few days to reports that Disney and the NFL are far apart on their deal. ESPN currently pays $1.9 billion a year for "Monday Night Football," so the NFL would like to double that, whereas Disney wants to go up 20 percent, according to these reports.

One must take such reports with a grain of salt, of course; not because they are wrong, but because a lot of this is just public negotiating. Something that people need to realize with Disney is how important the NFL is to ESPN, and not just because football is so highly rated. Not only would the fees that Disney is paid by cable companies for ESPN go down significantly if there's no NFL on the Worldwide Leader, but ESPN would also lose all the highlight rights that litter its broadcasts every day. That would be as big a hit in some ways as losing "Monday Night Football."

That said, if there is no rival bidder for ESPN's package, and it doesn't appear there is, the standoff could last. Disney has a new CEO, Bob Chapek, and this is his first NFL rodeo. So that is a wild card worth watching. NFL owners were close to his predecessor, Bob Iger, and deals often get done on that basis. Chapek ran Disney's parks before assuming the top post, and that business has been hard hit by the pandemic. Could that make him more parsimonious with NFL rights?

OK, so "Monday Night Football" should be staying on ESPN. We just don't know the price point yet. Let's look at Sunday. What do you expect the Sunday afternoon broadcast packages to look like? Will CBS and Fox continue to carry those games?

It appears Fox and CBS will retain their roles broadcasting the Sunday afternoon packages. While both companies have had their financial difficulties in the last 12 months, the value of the NFL is just too great to give up. So expect for a long time to tune into CBS and Fox on Sunday afternoons in the fall and winter. CBS wouldn't have paid up for Tony Romo's contract just to let the NFL slip away. A big question: Who will be Romo's partner? Jim Nantz can be a free agent shortly, but he is widely expected to stay put.

The jewel in the broadcast package now seems to be the Sunday prime-time game. Do you expect any changes to "Sunday Night Football"?

No great headline here, either. NBC almost surely will keep the Sunday night package. It's the most valuable commodity in prime-time television.

If there's going to be any significant change, it seems like it could come to "Thursday Night Football," which has been broadcast in recent years on CBS, Fox and NFL Network and streamed via Amazon Prime. What is the future of that broadcast, on traditional television or via streaming services?

The fate of "Thursday Night Football" is the 800-pound gorilla of the media deals. The incumbent Fox, which shares the games with NFL Network and Amazon Prime, has indicated it is not willing to pay up to keep the property. That is what has led to talk Amazon Prime could go it alone and create the NFL's first true streaming-only package. This is unlikely, as NFL Network would likely remain involved and there would still be simulcasts on the local TV affiliates in the markets of the teams playing each week. If I had to make a prediction it would be a shared deal between Amazon Prime and NFL Network. The NFL needs to keep some games on its in-house network to justify subscriber fees that it charges cable operators.

I am so curious about what role streaming services will play in the future of sports broadcasting. That medium is certainly already here, and I feel like we should assume that more and more people will continue to cut the cord from traditional broadcast services. Or young adults might never even sign up for a traditional cable package. As these deals are taking shape, what role do you see for streaming services, and what is the cost there?

The biggest change in streaming will likely come with the Thursday night package. But I keep hearing the NFL wants to claw back more digital rights, and this could mean anything from Sunday Ticket to RedZone. But don't delude yourself, streaming will be a small slice of the money equation when these deals are finished. Maybe in the next round of media deals that will change. One note about Amazon: Traditionally when its name comes up in this context, other tech giants are also mentioned — Apple, Facebook, Netflix and Twitter. While the NFL talked with all, they are viewed as far less interested in games. If Amazon has a competitor here, it is most likely a streaming service attached to a traditional media company, like Peacock (NBC) or ESPN+.

I have been a longtime DirecTV subscriber, in large part because of the Sunday Ticket package. It's a must-have in my job, so I have felt somewhat chained to that provider. And as I've been covering games from home more in recent years (especially in 2020!), Red Zone has been my favorite way to consume live games. So, personally, I am very interested in what's going to happen with Sunday Ticket in the next package. What do you see happening there?

There is little chance that Sunday Ticket remains with AT&T's DirecTV. AT&T has been going through a host of financial issues the last several years and has been quite clear to the NFL that it is not renewing, at least not at the $1.5 billion a year current price. In fact, there have been reports of AT&T looking to sell DirecTV. This would eliminate one of the longest partnerships in NFL history, as it goes back to 1994. What takes its place could be a single provider like a cable operator or a streaming company, or a hybrid model that splits the out-of-market games among two types of technological platforms. But the interesting thing here is the NFL may see a reduction because AT&T treated the NFL as a marketing expense. If it is not willing to do so again — and it's not — and others need to make the economics work, this might be a rare NFL rights package where the league's take goes in reverse.

Right now, you can watch the RedZone channel through DirecTV or the similar NFL RedZone option through other streaming and cable services. How do you think the NFL proceeds with RedZone, especially if the DirecTV partnership is dead moving forward?

RedZone is another asset that could be divided up between its existing distributors and a streaming platform. It all comes down to cost; by splitting up the package neither recipient pays for exclusivity. In the scheme of this discussion, the channel is small potatoes, but one could see something like ESPN+ or the new Paramount streaming service (recall those Super Bowl ads) seeing RedZone as distinguishing content.

Let's talk money: What sort of revenue is the league looking at from the new TV deal, and what will it mean for the salary cap in 2022 and beyond?

Approximately, a doubling of national broadcast revenues flowing into the NFL ultimately probably exceeds $14 billion annually. But it will take several years for all that revenue to come in. The ESPN deal expires after the upcoming season but there are two more seasons left for NBC, CBS, Fox and DirecTV. Typically broadcast contracts are structured so they rise incrementally. So it's not as simple as figuring out an average of the $14 billion and factoring that in to a given year.

All that said, we know that it will help the 2022 salary cap because of the new "Monday Night Football" deal. Beyond that, even exponentially more. There's been some talk that the NFL will borrow from these new deals to flatten out the cap this year, which is going to take a big hit because of the lack of fans in the stands in 2020 (local revenues are reflected in the following year's cap). That is overstated, as the league and NFLPA are expected to settle on a 2021 cap of at least $180 million. It was $198.2 million last year. It's not an exact apples-to-apples comparison because the caps do not include benefits, which can be $45 million per team. The league and union could take from the benefits side to prop up the cap, as has been done in the past and which is more likely than taking from the national TV deals not yet signed.

Bottom line: Player compensation looks set to surge. Caps of $220 million and upward will be the norm. That is, of course, assuming the pandemic is a distant memory.

How long are we talking about for these new TV deals?

I am hearing long-term deals, a minimum of six years, up to 10.  This says the NFL does not expect massive shifts in the way sports are consumed. In other words, if the NFL thought by 2025 Amazon would want its own Sunday afternoon package and would pay $3 billion, $4 billion, we would see shorter-term deals.  That's not happening. So the question of when a full NFL window is streamed exclusively looks to be one without an answer for many years.

-deals will be 10ish years. so, more or less, the way you consume football will not change until 2033
-if you didnt already know sunday ticket is moving off directv to who knows where, probably some streaming outlet

i dont even follow the stupid tv stuff like you but none of this is new

amazon exclusivity and the peacock game certainly are...amazon has been long linked to thursday but what nobody was sure of was if they would split with nfln or get the games themselves

i hope the eagles play a road game on peacock so you have to figure out how to download it

so bars arent going to have the games anymore?

im honestly not sure if bars are going to have the foresight to bring in a roku player and add amazon to it so it can be pulled up. like imagine going up to the bartender and saying hey can you put on peacock.

amazon gets exclusive thursday games perhaps changes this. peacock is going to have some nhl games so if you hit a place in like minnesota maybe theyll be ready for it

I was kidding...there isn't a farging chance in the world that the nfl Sunday ticket or whatever it ends up being called will not be in every bar/restaurant  that it is now...however that  happens

im not sure how it would work but theres going to be a back door for bars to get sunday ticket through cable/satellite. kind of the same way they have to order a super expensive ppv and dont just get the regular $75 one you or i would get.

cut to november 2025 and this motherfarger is watching eagles/vikings on his phone on peacock

By 2025 I'll need my glasses and a magnifying glass to see anything on my phone.

By 2025 Peacock will be shuttered because it loses money.

I don't follow closely enough to judge:  did Seattle screw Carlos Dunlap over?  They traded for him mid-season, and re-negotiated his deal, pushing $3M into a signing bonus due this year.  He played well.   They are now cutting him.  No $3M.

Looks bad.  Am I missing something?

No. He was willing to eat the money to get off the Bengals, and he'll make plenty on the open market this offseason. It was always understood by both parties that the Seahawks would be able to cut him.

So he just basically bought himself out of Cincinnati for $3M.

Not exactly. He took a $2M cut (not $3M) to set it up as a classic "bet on himself". If he stayed healthy and played well in 2020 (and I think he did), either the Seahawks would pay him more money in the last year of the deal than he was originally due, or he'd be able to parlay his good play into a fat new contract after being cut.

The salary cap reduction is going to mean a bloodbath for players

Chiefs cut both starting tackles
Reilly Reiff and Janoris Jenkins also cut today

There's over $400 million in cap space for just ten teams. We're probably going to see some contracts come out of that, call it a hunch.

half the league is 20 million or more under the cap

chiefs just happened to be at the bottom before their moves

Will probably be a bunch of one year contracts for players who would rather wait until the FA market is robust before opening long term bidding.

Could be some team that comes out of absolutely nowhere to win the SB with a bunch of one-year rentals. [Hint: it won't be the Eagles.] Or guys will just pile onto some super team for cheap to try to get a ring. [Also will not be the Eagles.]

QuoteTom Brady reached agreement with the Buccaneers today on a four-year contract extension that voids to a one-year extension that locks him into Tampa through the 2022 season, sources tell ESPN. The Brady extension saves the Buccaneers $19 million against the cap this year, per sources. The additional voidable years are there to defray the cost. It was another effort from Brady to keep as much of the team together as possible.

He might play until he's 50

I hope he does play until he's 50. We're never going to see a player like him ever again.

Meanwhile:

Drew Brees, 42, retires as the NFL's all-time leader in career passing yards (80,358) and ranks second all-time in touchdown passes (571) and completion percentage (67.7%).

cant bring up brees without a litany of playoff failure. for all those amazing stats and seasons, he made (and won) 1 super bowl. there were consecutive home playoff loses to jared goff and cuzzo.

hes going to be terrible on tv....dont think hell last long there and will settle doing something for the saints, perhaps follow the elway model

Best QB, sure. But because it's essentially a QB award, there are players out there like Jerry Rice who never won it.
