the Jalen draft
That's what I was figuring their strategy, draft everyone named jalen. Somewhere Brightfuture Kolb approves this pick.

whats crazy is that this draft is so deep and there were so many good players there

hurts is a player you take when you run out of good players available

it makes perfect sense....wentz isnt making another contract

they are going to get 2-3 more years out him then move to hurts. in the meanwhile hurts will do some gimmick shtein.

i am not defending this or supporting this. but this is why they did it. they view hurts as a long term starter and do not trust that wentz can play into his 30s at a high level.

Let's talk for a minute about Hurts himself tho:  good player?

I don't watch college football.  I would imagine given the schools he played for, he's a legit QB prospect, no?

Nevermind whether they need some other player or whatever..this the player they took.

Surely not Doug and Howard F Roseman.

he stinks....will never be an nfl qb

maybe a solid slot receiver
short yardage guy
inside the five guy

all neat stuff....second rounder tho is preposterous

there is no other logical explanation for this pick without it. howie isnt dumb enough to take tysom hill in the 2nd round or take some qb they can flip for a future 3 in 2023. they have to view hurts as a potential starter and envisioned a scenario where he gets the keys and they move wentz.

if that is not in their plans at all then this is the worst pick in the history of all drafts including fantasy

I'm not discussing the merits of Jalen Hurts.

IGY nailed it.  Worst pick in the history of the sport.  Utterly ridiculous.  This dwarfs Marcus Smith or Kevin Allen or the farging Canadian fire watcher.

QuoteKiper sees more upside in Hurts, however:

"I'm more optimistic here. I don't think Hurts is going to be a first-round pick, but he could land in Round 2 if he keeps playing this well. I want to see him against the Longhorns and better competition the rest of the way. Remember, he is doing this for an OU team that replaced four starters along the offensive line and lost its best receiver in Marquise Brown, who was drafted in Round 1 by the Baltimore Ravens. I don't think Hurts is a fluke. He's legit."

Strange pick, hoping for the Taysom Hill strategy

The only scenario that makes sense is they've either given up on AO1 and will use Hurts as his replacement or they took him for someone else.

I mean it's insane in every possible sense of the word, but it is plausible.

If Howie picked him as a gimmick, then he gotta go.

This sums it up nicely
Quoteeaglesb_logo.gif Philadelphia Eagles: Jalen Hurts, QB, Alabama - O'BRIEN- Grade
What the hell is this? Unless the Eagles have a trade lined up where they can ship Jalen Hurts, this makes absolutely no sense, and I think Howie Roseman has lost his mind. There's no reason to take a quarterback here, period, with Carson Wentz not even in his prime yet. And yet, this is a major reach. Jalen Hurts' ceiling is very low, so he should've been a fourth-round pick. This is the worst pick of the draft so far unless a trade is pending.

Schefter sounds like a Trump supporter trying to rationalize his stupidity:

QuoteNow, in this day and age, I've had teams tell me it's more important than ever to have a backup quarterback in this pandemic. We're going to be playing next year, coronavirus is out there, Covid-19 - what if your quarterback gets the virus? It's an interesting situation here. I think there are more problems now than ever before, and now I think teams are looking to shore up the most important position in this sport, and that's why the Eagles did that.

Regarding the complaint about how much draft capital was "wasted":

People act as though 2nd rounders are sure things,    And worse, that Eagles 2nd rounders are sure things.

In reality, the draft is almost a total crapshoot, with only the slightest veneer of order.

I love that everyone hates the pick,  to be honest.  Makes me think Howie might be onto something.

Which is worse, missing on a 2nd round pick or passing on a gamechanger?  Maybe this kid wrecks shtein in the NFC East.

That's what I'm going with anyway.  He's going to prove everyone wrong and the Eagles are going to mop teams up for a few years.

Goddamnit.

so the way to avoid drafting someone who will not pan out is to take a day one back up at a position you dont need....seems like a cowardly strategy to not be wrong

first rounders dont always work out either...maybe next time just forfeit your turn there...if you dont pick you cant be wrong!

I hate these plays with Hurts at QB/taking the snap and Carson lined up wide...never once have they thrown to Carson to keep the defense honest...and even if they did he's so f'n slow, can't run a route, etc...he's not even a ghost of a threat...thirty some times they've done this crap and all they are doing is giving the D an extra man for the play

I see that once tonight it's a self induced ice pick to the eyes.  That play is a slap in the face to everyone.  "Hey look folks!  We are using Hurts in this really cool formation that has netted maybe half a yard all season!  And just wait to you see what we have in store for two point conversions! Second QB to rush for 100+ in his first start, after Lamar.

New Orleans D is 4th in the league in sacks this season.  Hurts was not sacked yesterday.

Second QB ever to upset a team on a 9+ win streak in his first start.  The first to do it was Jaws in the last game of the 1975 season, with the Rams, beating the Steelers.  Jaws scored the only TD of the game, on a 2 yard rush.

Post by: QB Eagles on July 28, 2021, 04:31:34 PM
There's actually a Tier 5 of guys who definitely shouldn't be starters, but none of players in question fell into it.

"A Tier 1 quarterback can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure passing situations. He has no real holes in his game."

"A Tier 2 quarterback can carry his team sometimes but not as consistently. He can handle pure passing situations in doses and/or possesses other dimensions that are special enough to elevate him above Tier 3. He has a hole or two in his game."

"A Tier 3 quarterback is a legitimate starter but needs a heavier running game and/or defensive component to win. A lower-volume dropback passing offense suits him best."

"A Tier 4 quarterback could be an unproven player with some upside or a veteran who is ultimately best suited as a backup."

The exact place isn't supposed to be taken seriously, just the "tiers". This is interesting to me because it's a sample of what head coaches, GMs, coordinators, QB coaches, and scouts around the league think of these guys.

There are some coachable things where Hurts could improve. Like his terrible pre-snap reads that are directly responsible for the R part of RPO being merely theoretical. Not saying he will improve on that, but he could.

Anyway, there's no one in the draft, so get used to having Hurts around. Maybe they could get Matt Ryan, but I don't see any other vet coming to Philly.

Also I don't think looking good or bad at OTAs tells you anything.

Hopefully he continues this

I'd throw Todd in that group. His take on the move and take on Wentz was so accurate it's a bit scary. I think he liked the move just didn't want to admit it at the time.

Hurts is never going to have a gun that lasers a pass between 3 defenders over the middle consistently but his deep ball is one of the best in the league and his accuracy is on point. Only Geno Smith and Burrow have a higher completion %. From everything I gather he's always been the hardest worker wherever he's been but from listening to insiders he really became a student of the nfl game in the offseason. He makes no excuses and does what's needed to win games.

i never anticipated hurts playing this well. thought he best case scenario could be a fringe starter/backup type. but when the eagles picked him, they did so believing that his ceiling was much higher. they turned out to be correct.

what was obvious about the move was what it said about wentz. you dont go spending a 2 on a qb unless youre not super confident in your starter. i dont think anyone expected wentz's career to be over 6 months later but they had all the intel in the world on wentz so they had some idea of where it was headed

Looking back none of us knew how bad of a guy Wentz was.  They knew it well enough in the building and took a shot on Hurts.  It's turned out way better than anyone could have expected but let's not forget the team around him is wayyy better that it would have been with Wentz because of the money not being spent on a franchise QB right now.

They have a shtein ton of dough to throw around because they're paying Hurts peanuts.

Maybe that's the way to build winners these days?  Get a guy with decent skills and all-world intangibles on the cheap and make a couple of years worth of runs with the dough you're saving?

Knowing how Howie operates, it's completely within the realm of possibility that he rolled the dice on this.

But it's not possible.

For every Jalen Hurts, you have dozens of inferior players, many of them grossly so.
Putting supply aside, what player-QB or otherwise-wants to play for a team that announces they're unwilling to pay a good QB market value, will instead let him walk so they can fill the role with a cheaper prospect?  Good luck getting free agents, re-signing in-house talent, or for that matter, getting rookie QBs to even play for you?  They might justifiably refuse to report and wait a year for the next draft.  It's terrible business idea.
How does one sell such a plan to the fans, who want icons and wins?

Hitting the jackpot is not good cause to gamble more, it's a signal to cut your bets.  Mailatas and Jalens don't just appear on the regular.

I don't know that I want to put this much thought into the question I'm about to propose-- but going back to Jaws forward...if you were to start a team now with a former Eagles QB starter in his prime (and Jalen, who knows, Jalen could get somehow better?), how would you rank them and where would Jalen fit in? I can tell you without much thought that I'd already take him ahead of McNabb. He's pretty close to the top of the list already, looking at the combination of physical talents, leadership and decision-making. I'll say, at least, that I'm confident if Jalen was the QB over McNabb, the Eagles beat the Pats in '04.

I'm not sure what is ludicrous about that statement.  Is it the break the bank part?  Or maybe it's the part where they could possibly use two number 1's in this year's draft as capital to select his replacement rather than giving Hurts a blockbuster deal?

I mean either way forward is logical.  Either sign Hurts to a huge deal if they think he's worth it or select a replacement and ensure a cap-friendly contract for the next several years at the most important position on the team?

Players go where the money is.  They don't give two shteins about anything else no matter how many Tik Tok videos they appear in with their buddies.

And the Eagles are on a really unique position right now.  They have plenty of resources to go get a replacement for Hurts at a more reasonable price than what he is going to cost.  That means more money for free agents from teams who spend $50M on relics like Rodgers, Brady, et al.

I'm not saying it's going to happen.  They probably will pay Hurts what the market will bear for him.

But if they're not sold on Hurts, and I'm not sure they are, I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled a shocker like that.

I get Rome's point: if they don't re-sign Hurts and draft a cheaper option it gives them the cap freedom to sign/keep players. My counter point would be franchise qbs don't grow on trees, he's at least a top 10 qb but probably top 5, it's the most important position in sports, there's zero guarantee the new player will be as good, it'll take 2-3 years for them to play at this level, Howie's a cap magician and they have a ton of draft capital to fill out free agents who leave.

I do understand the argument for moving on from Hurts, but if the team thinks that what he's doing now is sustainable even for just a few years, you gotta pay him. And right now his trajectory is still pointing up. Look what he did mostly as a pocket passer this week.

You know Howie isn't going to be stuck with an expensive bad QB, look how he was able to move on from Wentz. Albatross contracts is a Phillies concern, not an Eagles one.

this is mostly because hes throwing to aj brown and has a great line...hurts is much better than i ever imagined but hes not a t1 qb.

lets just give him the kyler murray deal, to make it easy. murrays deal is basically 4 years. the 5th year its a $20 mil cap dead cap hit. so in a everything goes horrible scenario, youre basically committing to jalen for 4 years then you can eat it and get out. aj brown wont even be 30 then, devonta will be younger. if he has those 2 guys, someone on his level will be able to produce.

The Eagles wouldn't have the stacked roster they have now if they were having to pay a franchise quarterback salary.

I'm not advocating for them not to sign Hurts.  I'm not advocating that they let him walk or trade him either.

What I'm saying is they let Wentz walk after paying him franchise money.  They drafted Hurts and then surrounded him with the best roster I've ever seen in Philly.  They literally already did what I'm suggesting they might consider doing again if they don't see Hurts as a 10-yr starter.

You seemed to be arguing that having a franchise qb is inadvisable whoever he is, that instead of paying a good qb market value past his rookie deal, you let him walk and replace him with the younger cheaper prospect, ad infinitum--the idea being that the money is better spent elsewhere, I guess, even if you're letting great players go...on that part I'm still not clear---but now you seem to be saying that of course you keep and pay a guy like Hurts for 10 years...so I still don't understand

Yes the argument is that it's inadvisable to drop megabucks on even a very good QB unless he's a proven game-breaking alien like Mahomes. There's a lot of one-year and two-year wonders, and having a passable starter on a rookie contract is like a financial cheat code in the NFL. You definitely don't want to be stuck getting Flacco performance from a Flacco contract, and from a championship-focused perspective you might not even want to be stuck with a HOFer in his peak years like Rodgers was if it's going to torpedo the ability to spend on the rest of your team and keep your ceiling in the middle of the playoffs.

I trust the Eagles to figure out what Hurts is worth, and Howie is a bit of a financial cheat code himself, so I don't really get being nervous about how this plays out.

QuotePhiladelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who will miss Saturday's game against the Dallas Cowboys because of a sprained shoulder, also is uncertain to play against the New Orleans Saints in Week 17, league sources told ESPN. Hurts is recovering from what doctors are calling a SC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder -- an injury to the joint where the collarbone meets the breastbone. The Eagles would like to see how this weekend plays out in the NFC playoff race and how Hurts' shoulder responds to rest and treatment before determining whether the MVP candidate can play against the Saints on New Year's Day. The Eagles (13-1) need to win one of their remaining three games -- they conclude the schedule with home games against the Saints and Giants -- to clinch the NFC's top seed and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. If the Eagles can win Saturday in Dallas, they would not need to risk Hurts next week against the Saints. But if they lose Saturday, Hurts will push to play against New Orleans even if he is not fully healthy, as is expected to be the case, according to sources.

If they lose tomorrow he plays vs the Saints guaranteed

$35M/yr is a steal solely on what's guaranteed.  If he plays anywhere near the level he played last year, this one will be torn up in 3 yrs.

Amazing how this played out.  farging Howie... he's the man.

THAT IS AWESOME!!!  I love this man. So refreshing to see this after having to endure the shtein show of James Harden and the disappearing act of Joel Houdini.

I'm gonna be 49 this year.

I genuinely admire/look up to this kid.  His mantra about keeping the main thing the main thing is a schema I've actually used to talk myself down from angry distractions, etc...

the Eagles got so f'n lucky with him...

The main discussion happening on the bird site seems to be which school alumni now gets to claim him as one of theirs... Alabama or OU?

I almost asked which set of fans would call him a stillupfront behind his back *last* to settle the dispute.

Phenomenal accomplishment for Hurts, however.

LOVE HIM LOVE HIM LOVE HIM!!!

What the philly sports scene needs! Dawk, JRoll, Malcom Jenkins, Kelce, BG stuff.  I find myself clinching my fist when someone talks shtein about him.

I did not mean to clock the 10 year old Chiefs fan down the street.

He plays the role almost too perfectly for a Philadelphia fan to feel comfortable with. Hope he's not a secret prostitute killer or something.

His "keep the main thing the main thing" phrase stuck with me, has been a useful schema to return to at times.  A grown ass man using words out the mouths of babes to stay on track...

Couldn't ask for a better team leader than him.

I watch a lot of CFB and hated when he went to OU bc I loathe that program. And when they took him in the 2nd we all exploded. But damn if Howie wasn't right.

Revenge tour coming up.
