Clemens' hammy must really be injured for him to miss a start now.  I wonder if he may miss more than that.

Opportunity beckons for the Fightins!  :yay

Here's the article that Phreak was talking about:  Howard is starting.

QuotePhillies Notes Howard's stock gets a boost
Even with a lefty pitching, he'll probably start tonight.

By Todd Zolecki
Inquirer Staff Writer

CINCINNATI - Could one at-bat make such a difference?

Maybe.

The game-winning grand slam by Ryan Howard off Atlanta's John Foster on Wednesday not only represented his first major-league homer off a lefthander, but it might have made him a more serious rookie-of-the-year candidate.

And it might have even earned him a start against a lefthander this weekend at Great American Ball Park.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said before last night's game against the Cincinnati Reds that he expected to start Howard tonight against Reds lefthander Eric Milton. He said it was because of the way Milton pitches, referring to his release point among other things. But in reality, it was probably because Milton has allowed 40 home runs and because the Reds' park is a bandbox.

"It's all a matter of getting experience against lefthanders, just trying to get used to it," Howard said. "It's just being patient."

Recently, Manuel has started Ramon Martinez at first base against lefthanders because Howard is batting just .119 (7 for 59) with 30 strikeouts and five RBIs in his career against lefthanders.

"It's really all about seeing the ball and getting comfortable," Howard said. "I'm not even worried about it."

Howard's stance has changed in recent weeks. He is standing more upright, with the idea that it lets him see the ball better.

So far, so good.

"I'm still kind of searching for whatever feels good," Howard said.

NL East anybody?

The Phils' chances of winning the National League wild card look better their chances of winning the NL East, right? Well, Major League Baseball thinks they have enough of a chance to win the East that it held a coin flip yesterday to determine the site of a potential one-game playoff between them and the Braves.

The Phillies entered last night four games behind the Braves with nine to play. If the teams are tied on Oct. 2, when the season ends, they will play on Oct. 3 at Citizens Bank Park.

Abreu hurting.

Bobby Abreu's left thigh is so sore that Manuel had some concerns about the rightfielder's chances of scoring from second base on a single Thursday in Atlanta. Don't be surprised if he is replaced by a pinch-runner in some key situations.

No Martinez. The New York Mets said Pedro Martinez won't start against the Phillies on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park if they are mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. That is likely.

Abreu is such a slacker. He hasn't missed a game all year and now he's whining about his leg that he can barely walk on?

How dare he!

Lazy farg just doesn't want to run hard.

Abreu doesn't care if he wins. He cares about his numbers and getting his paycheck.

I know...he completely didn't run hard enough on that single the other day...even IF he was limping terribly and looked like he was in a world of hurt. He just doesn't care at all.

Did you see that lame attempt at arguing those terrible strike calls? NO veins popping out of his next, no spittle, nothing!

Lame. Slacker.

Astros won 8-3. Thanks Dusty & Zambrano...farg heads.

Pat Burrell shaved his head and Harry is lusting over "a guy who doesn't have to do anything to make himself look better". But since Harry is a player with the over 50 crowd, he knows all about impressin the ladies.

Brito's gotta come up huge tonight.

I think things will be tied going into the final 3 games.

As for today, it was pretty simple. Offense capatalized on rallies except for stranding Rollins on a leadoff triple. Lidle pitcher very well, Urbina and Wags shut em down at the end.

We only have three reliable members of the pen, who I presume we will run into the ground these last games. Fultz, Urbina and Wagner. They better be ready everyday.

If it makes anyone feel better, for the first time in awhile, the Phillies are one of the 4 best teams in their league. Too bad the NL West is allowed a playoff team.

Doesn't make me feel better at all.  Does make me wish the Sillies were in the NL West though.

I actually like the Padres but that is so wrong that they might go into the playoffs under .500. :boo

Padres had a chance to basically win the division tonight and blew it to the Giants. I'm hoping the Giants get in so Bonds will be the center of attention, he'll act like the jerk that he is and hide behind a national tradgedy, then get blasted in public.

It's like that in every sport. The only reason you don't bitch about it in football is the Eagles are good every year. If the Phillies were fully dedicated to winning you wouldn't even have to worry about it. The Braves win the division every year, but get smoked in the playoffs every year. Why? Because they suck. They are overrated. It's easy to overtake the Braves. Why haven't the Phillies done it? Because the management doesn't know what the hell they are doing.

that would make sense if the Braves hadn't won the division 80 years in a row.  Stop sniffing glue.  The Braves are a very well run organization who makes the playoffs every year.

i hate the Braves, but you can't knock em for not winning the World Series every year.

Not only do they not win it every year, but they get upset by a wild card team almost every year. They underachieve when it counts.

In recent years I'd say they've overachieved during the regular season rather than underachieve during the playoffs.  But regardless of whether or not they are over or underrated, they've won like 14 division titles in a row and that's nothing to be ashamed of.  Could you imagine the Eagles winning the NFC East 14 years in a row?  I'll be flat out amazed if/when they get #5.

I hope you're happy MLB, you've done it.  You've beaten the Phillies again and kept them from succeeding.  Wah, wah, wah.  The Phillies are the awesomest and you know it and you're just keeping them down.  Wah, wah, wah.

Title: Re: Phillies season 10
Post by: SunMo on September 27, 2005, 11:59:35 AM
i'm half and half on Wags' comments.  on one hand, he is right, why do you go to the games if you are unhappy with the team.  if you spend the money to go, you might as well just cheer them.  i am not happy with the team, so i don't go.  however, i don't need to hear him whining about it, just shut up and try not to serve up anymore gopher balls to your buddies on Houston.

also, Phillies fans are amongst the dumbest around, there is such a lack of understanding of baseball among the fans at the games and that call WIP.  people are calling WIP and bitching that Wagner should've started the 8th inning, that is just stupid.  and from people calling for Thome to move to 3rd and for Utley to play center, it's almost comical if it wasn't so embarassing.
Title: Re: Phillies season 10
Post by: MDS on September 27, 2005, 12:07:14 PM
People on WIP are retarted. Everytime something goes wrong in a game, they think of some illogical route Manuel could've gone and whine that he didn't do it. Wagner has pitched pretty much every game on the road trip, and now he needs to go 2 inning? Urbina was effective as of late, but Manuel is supposed to look into his magical crystal ball and forsee him blowing the game.

Yea, makes sense. Urbina cost them the game. Plain and simple.

The funny thing is they will probably come back to win this game late. They are toying with your insides.

Then they will win game 3 vs the Mets and blow an easy game vs the Nats.

The season is in the hands of the Astros at this point. If the Phillies get in it's because the Astros lost it, not because the Phillies won it.

Of course you do, but my point was that as much energy as people are putting into these last 2 series, the Astros going into the tank is equally if not more important. Since the Phillies don't sweep teams, you have to figure they are going to lose at least one more game this season to the Nationals, and maybe 2.

I don't know how you and Ed can stand those toolbags on that forum.  Jesus, talk about uptight.

Wade's contract can be paid off so easily. He makes extremely little money. He's gone 100% next year, and it's not up for debate.

That's bullshtein.  I cheered for the Eagles when they had Harry Gamble for a general manager, Norman Braman for an owner and Rich Kotite for a head coach.  You don't stop being a fan just because the team is in disarray or because management has its head stuck up its ass.

I've been a Phillies fan for longer than most of you have drawn breaths on this Earth.  I'll continue to be a die-hard until I croak regardless of the circumstances.  That won't make the pain of another lost season go away any quicker, though.

The reason I ask is mostly a matter of perspective.

Avenger says that those that continue to support the Phils are "as bad as the owners."  I'm in my mid-30s, and one of my favorite childhood memories is of watching the Phils beat the Royals in the 1980 World Series with my grandmother (the only other baseball fan in my family, she loved Manny Trillo).  I was nine that year, and still had the naiveté to believe that happened every year.  Here I am, 25 years later, still trying to recapture those precious but fleeting moments of unadulterated, unbridled joy that accompanies your favorite sports team win the ultimate championship (I can remember the Sixers in 1983, but my basketball fandom is not nearly as deep as football, baseball and hockey).  Heck, that's probably why I work on a website on the 1980 Phils.  Getting older, but not wanting to grow up.  8)

That team entrenched me into a life-long love of Philadelphia Sports, along with the fact that all four major sports teams in Philadelphia all played for their league's championship in a year's span, including the Eagles in Super Bowl XV.  It's not always easy being a fan of the Phillies- or the Eagles for that matter (Two words:  Rich Kotite.  Two more: Norman Braman.).  But, to steal a parable from the Bible (and my apologies if it sounds sacriligious):  As the deer pants for the water, so the souls of the Philadelphia sports fan longs for it's team, and for that elusive championship.

It's been 22 years for the Sixers.
It's been 25 for the Phils.
It's been 30 for the Flyers.
It's been 45 for the Eagles.

I was too young to remember the Flyers' Cup runs.  I have not seen an Eagles NFL championship in my lifetime.  However, I shall continue to support my teams until the Lord decides to call me home one day.  And I am trying to teach my son (while living in Florida) the trials and the benefits of following the teams from Philadelphia.

I cannot speak for anyone else here.  MDS wasn't born when the Sixers won in 83.  A few of the posters here are my age or thereabouts, and they may have personal recollections of the "Glory Year" of the Phils.  For me, the Phils are a symbol of a simpler time of my life, when the stars seemed within reach.  They remind me of my Grandma yelling at Mike Schmidt to "Hit the ball, you simple sonofabitch" in true Philadelphia fashion.  They remind me of watching the parade during school in Honey Brook, PA with my 3rd Grade teacher, Mrs. Hornberger, who just recently passed away.  The Phils started a lifelong love of baseball, and in sports in general, in that magical year of 1980, when what had for nearly a century seemed impossible became reality, even if for just one summer.

The main thing with the Phillies is so much more than the losing. It's how they lose, it's the excuses, it's the bad decisions, it's the bad attitudes, it's the collapses, it's the lack of deadline movies, and other things. At least the other teams make the playoffs. The first step is getting to the playoffs and then it's a new ball game. The Phillies haven't been there in 12 going on 13 years. How many professional sports teams out there haven't made the playoffs in 13 years? Not many.

The Eagles have never won a Superbowl, but they care about winning, they embrace the fans, they make the playoffs every year, they don't make excuses, and they always step up when it counts. I get on them for being cheap sometimes, but usually their moves turn out to be right. Even when the Phillies spend their decisions are always wrong.

The Sixers haven't won a title lately, but second closest of our major sports teams of winning one lately. Billy King while making some bad moves, he is never afraid to pull the trigger on a deal. They are great with the fans, they are dedicated to winning, even if sometimes they make some bad moves along the way. They don't make excuses as an organization either. Jim O'brien is there a year, and makes the playoffs? GONE. Sixers don't farg around.

The Flyers went out and had the best offseason of any team. They contend every year. They care about the fans. They always make moves to try to improve the team. They hired a championship winning coach. They cut ties with a successful coach in Barber. Again, not afraid to try to win. Not afraid to step on some toes.

I don't like baseball much to begin with, but to me the bottom line is if a team is going to just completely disrespect it's fans then you shouldn't respect them. Maybe it's different for me because I consider baseball a boring sport for the most part. It's all about perspective like you said. I'm not one that likes to be pushed around, and I feel the Phillies do that. That is why I stopped being a fan of them about 3 years ago. I might root for them again if they make some major changes, but if they sold the team I wouldn't even care all that much. Just not a big baseball fan.

By the way, Lad, who did the Phils play in the 1980 NLCS?  ;D

that would be a lot more painful if the Astros were 2.5 games back of the Phillies in the Wild Card race.

That would be a lot more painful if I didn't have a memory of at least ONE World Series championship to remember.  :evil

Never mind that it was one in 120+ years...   :paranoid
Title: Re: Phillies season 10
Post by: Rome on September 28, 2005, 08:11:49 AM
Well, not only do I remember the Phillies lone world championship; I was there to experience it.  I was at the Vet with my brother, my sister and my brother in law when Tugger struck out Willie Wilson to win the whole enchilada and although it's been 25 years, it's a feeling that I'll never forget.

I cheer for the team because they're my team.  Sure, I get furious when they lose.  Yes, I'm farging angry that we have to sit here year after year watching them lose.  I'm pissed off that we have cheapskate owners, inept management, and gutless players (not all, but enough) who couldn't care less about the fans who pay their salaries.  I'm enraged that decade after decade passes without us being able to experience the thrill of ultimate victory as fans.

But I ask you: What the farg am I supposed to do?  Turning my back on the franchise because they're losing or inept simply isn't in my character.  I'm going to cheer for whomever wears the uniform because I wear the uniform too.  I buy the tickets, I wear the various hats, I wear my Phillies jersey and curse at them when they come up short but I also scream my voice raw when they win big.  That's what being a fan is all about.

If you don't agree, that's fine.  Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion.  With that said, my opinion is, you don't turn your back on your team when they lose.

Come February when pitchers and catchers report, I'll be looking forward to seeing the Phils season start up again.  Why, you might ask?   Because I'm a fan.  I've been one all my life and will be one until the day they dump my ashes into the ocean in Sea Isle.

Randy Miller was on WIP and he said he thinks Wade is gone. He said that article that Rich Hofmann wrote in Monty's office while watching the game had a telling quote about Monty knowing Wade is under fire.

Why is it that Bell waited to get hurt with 4 games left in the year? Why couldn't he have gotten hurt with 144 games left in the year?

I hate, hate, hate that motherfarger.

No good pieces of garbage. Lose 2 one-run must win games? Effing typical.

Now we have to wish for a total Astros collapse. :-\

David Bell...for a 3rd generation baseball player, he sure plays stupid sometimes, i could tell when he was halfway to 2nd that he was going to try for 3rd and knew he was going to be out by the time he touched 2nd, what a tool

Everyone but David Bell knew he was going to be out, Manuel and Rollins got as close to ripping him last night as you possibly could without saying "he totally sucks".

Larry Andersen said "Oh, no. No." when he was halfway between 2bd & 3rd. There is an audible gasp from the entire crowd as he rounded 2nd.

Your hottest hitter (Rollins ) is on deck and you try that shtein? Farg that icehole.

I'm glad he dislocated his finger. Too bad it didn't happen sooner.

i see what youre saying about rollins but i dont care if ted williams is up next the batter is irrelevant at that point

the cardinal rule of base running at any level of baseball is you DONT EVER MAKE THE THIRD OUT AT THIRD

we learn this in little league for god sakes

if hes so concerned about his sloth like speed at least give the manager the chance to pinch run for you
Title: Re: Phillies season 10
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on September 28, 2005, 09:06:37 AM
Yep. You're right. Never make the first or third out at 3rd base.

And the totallt farging maddening thing about this was....

Regardless of if he's at 2nd or 3rd he still scores on a goddamn single! It makes no difference whether he's at 3rd or 2nd because with 2 outs he's running on contact.

Damn...what a jerkoff this guy is.

Maybe next year the team will not be picked by anyone to win anything, and they'll respond by beating expectations and getting into the wild-card chase.  Sure, they'll miss the playoffs, again, but that's not so bad with low expectations.
Title: Re: Phillies season 10
Post by: MDS on September 28, 2005, 12:51:12 PM
What I would do:

C: Losethal is garbage. Sign Ramon Hernandez or Brad Ausmus (hitting sucks, but good game caller). Waive Losethal if you have to.
1B: Bring back Gene Schall. If that fails, we can always trade Thome and keep Howard.
2B: Utley? Ok.
SS: Locked into Rollins. Hope he's more consistant nexr year.
3B: Bye bye Bell. Joe Randa and Bill Mueller are better options (ha, really). Even Wes Helms. Get Bell outta here.
LF: Locked into that choker Burrell.
CF: Interesting spot. Have Roberson in AAA near readdy, Victorino could also do it. Lofton/Michaels would be effective again. I'd look to package Victorino with Thome and then hand Roberson that job next year. We can pick up Loftons option, give him one more year.
RF: Michael Tucker, no doubt.

SP: Lieber and Myers stick. I'm sick of Padilla and his nonsense and injuries. Get him out. Plan was that Floyd would be ready by now, but who knows. Wolf wont be back till midseason, if at all. Keep Lidle as insurence, he can an effective 5th starter. Need to sign someone here. Matt Morris, AJ Burnett are some names out there. Gotta get someone who can step in and improve the rotation. Figure Burnett, Lieber, Myers, Lidle and give Floyd a shot at the 5. If he still sucks, Tejeda can step in and fill the void till Wolf is back. If Floyd turns it on, we can either move Lidle to the pen or trade him once Wolf comes back.

RP: Wagner needs to shut up, but hes still really good. Urbina blows too many saves, get him out. Madson, Fultz can stick. Need someone to help out there in the 7th/8th, there are a host of names out there that can do an okay job. Guys like Geary, Lopez can fill out the rest of the pen. If Floyd turns out to be good, then Tejeda can step in and be real good out of the pen.

Bench: Perez and Pratt need to go. Chavez, too. Victorino maybe off the bench? I'd keep Martinez around. Other than that, go for all new guys. The bench sucks really. Especially Perez and Pratt. Gotta get rid of the garbage on this team, and those two guys are part of it. Not big parts, but parts.

this makes the 3rd season in a row where the philths have singlehandedly given the wild card away. unless houston colapses in these last 4 games.

this year, astros
2004 astros, finished 6 games back. the phils went 0-6. a series split gives them matching records. (granted there were a few other teams between them.
2003 marlins, finished 5 back, and the marlins had the phils number completely. again a series split, and it's a whole new season.

i dont blame the manager in any of the cases. while i hardly think manual is a great manager. it's been the same players for 3 years doing the same damn thing year after year after year.

everything thing changed, the park, the manager, expectations....the only thing that remained was the players. farg them.

i dont even care about this for me. but it hit me last night, i took my little sister to the game, and when they lost, she was crying. broke my heart. she's the biggest phillie fan i know, she's 16 years old. she was crying about the loss. i cant get that out of my head. and the protective big brother in me comes through and makes me down right farging HATE this team sometimes.

abreu is the biggest Hoyda  i have ever seen play the game of baseball. farg you and your worthless home run derby bullshtein.

I'm watching the Mets broadcasters.  When will I stop hearing the same crap about Abreu being a very strong defensive outfielder?

He's a nice hitter, gets on base a lot, and has a good arm, but he has limited mobility, and is lazy in the outfield.  Yet whenever I watch games on ESPN, or TBS, or FSN, opposing teams announcers seem to have the opinion he's a strong fielder and are suprised when he messes up out there.  I don't get it.

I don't generally bash Abreu, but let's not pretend he's Jim Edmonds in the outfield.  You'd be suprised how many broadcasters just assume he's among one of the leagues elite defensive outfielders.

By the way...

The Phills attendance was down over 500,000 this year. That is the 4th biggest drop in the second year of a new ballpark in MLB history.

They said on the radio today that in lost season ticket revenue alone it was $16 million bucks they lost.

And if you add in concessions and parking the Phils lost over $23 million bucks in 2005 versus 2004.

And they'll lose more if Wade isn't fired.

$23M is no chump change, folks. The money-lovin ghost owners have to make a change.

I got like 10 letters from them after the deadline passed. And 3 phone calls asking me why.

I told them that we were "getting married and needed the extra money and oh yeah....until the ownership proves to us that they care about the team, I refuse to spend my money on our tickets. Thanks for calling."
Title: Re: Phillies season 10
Post by: Rome on September 29, 2005, 09:35:09 AM
Nearly every one of those lost tickets can be attributed to season ticket holders.

They had 23,000 in 2004 and had 17,000 in 2005.  81 games X 6,000 lost season tickets = 486,000.

Phreak's right.  If you want a rise in season ticket holders, you're going to have do more than sign another Jon Lieber.  Wade's gotta go, Manuel's gotta go, Bell's outta here, Lieberthal's gone and possibly Thome unless he can regain his 2003 form.

I'm thinking Abreu will go too.  I just have a hunch that he'll be used as trade bait for a starter or 3rd baseman.

Even though I might be the only Bobby Abreu fan in Philadelphia, I think that trading him might be something I would consider.

And I would consider trading Pat Burrell as well. Not both of them, but one or the other.

In order to get a good player, you've got to give up a good player.

Trade Abreu or Burrell for a starting pitcher

Attempt to trade for Torii Hunter (I love Hunter) and he'd be our CF of the future and is RH power bat would replace Burrell.

Sign a 3B & C

Re-sign Wagner (this is a MUST)
Title: Re: Phillies season 10
Post by: Rome on September 29, 2005, 09:53:02 AM
They have to cut down on the strikeouts somewhere.  If Thome comes back, that adds another 150 K's to the lineup and that's simply too much.

I don't want Burrell traded, though.  He's just now entering his prime whereas Abreu is what he is.  He's not going to get any better.

Trade him now while he still has some value left.

Edited - I have a feeling Wagner's gone regardless.  Too many bridges burned with management.  Unless they get a front-line manager instead of some castoff like Manuel, he's out of here and onto a place like Boston.  Boston would be able to pay him whatever he wants, he'd still be on the East Coast and he'd be on a World Series favorite, plus they'll have the dough to spend since Damon will be history.

Alright, a little analysis then.

They're not negotiating with him now per the interview.  That leads me to believe that either they're not going to re-sign him or the management team that is in power now isn't free to negotiate with anyone because their heads are on the chopping block.

Either way, I can't see him returning if someone else gets a chance to sign him.  He's made that abundantly clear, PG.  Judging from his comments and the tone of his voice, it's pretty obvious that he wants to return but it takes two to tango.

there's no way of knowing how good cashman actually is.

are there any players for the yankees that were groomed by the yankees other than Jeter? (i really dont know the answer). or that they traded for before they were big names (brought in as a prospect)?

it doesnt take a mastermind GM to go out and sign the biggest names each year. just a big open payroll. i mean anyone here (except MDS) could be GM of the yankees.

I would argue that anything is better than Wade right now and he does have a track record of winning regardless of his payroll.  The Phils went out and spent boatloads of cash and still can't make the playoffs (this year excluded  :D).

in my opinion the phillies are not that far off from being a more threatening contender. i think the offense is above average, but just lacking leadership and the strikeouts are too high.

the bullpen is ok enough, but every year they get overused and wind up completely ineffective by september, which leads (to the same thing every year) to the need of a #1 pitcher. Leiber, Myers, Padilla (in that order) can be a ver good 2-4 starter set. but we still need to see them get a #1.

basically, i would do this

1)(as someone else said) get rid of Burrell or Abreu, they both have value right now. (maybe a 3B prospect, or a catching prospect.

2a) If this year was just a bad year for Thome: do what you can to teach howard to play the OF, left or right field. (preferably left).

2b) try and trade thome. i dont know how or who. but some AL team must have interest as a DH. or something. i wouldnt want to see howard traded, this kid is for real.

3) get rid of either David Bell or Mike Leiberthal. it's unrealistic that they could get rid of both. but you should replace one of them, preferably bell. If they can get rid of bell, dump tomas perez, sign a new everyday 3B, and let bell sit on the bench and become a utility guy.

4) I would try and keep wagner, although i dont see this happening. Urbina is okay as a closer, but i would still prefer wagner, and i am afraid that the phils will lose him for nothing.

5) if they shore up the 3B or C spot, i am ok with the platoon in CF that could work with Victarino or Michaels or Lofton (if he is resigned).

All this and i am counting on Utley and or Howard as they grow to become more leaders on this team.

You guys can't be serious trying to trade Abreu. All he does is have a .400+ obp, 100 rbi's, 100 runs, 100 walks, a near .300 avg, 20 homers, constantley leads the league in pitchers seen and pitchers per at bat. He is the best player on this team, I think him playing at 50% this past two weeks has warped your mind into thinking hes not that good. He is.

Burrell I wouldn't mind, but right now he's your only right handed power in the lineup. You need someone to break the lefties up somehow. What can you get for him and that contract? I dont know....

Wingspan, I agree with everything you say there, though I just don't see Thome, Bell, or Leiberthal getting traded.  The Phils have a insurmountable aversion to eating any salary.

MDS, I wouldn't trade Abreu but I sure as hell would trade Burrel now.  That guy is a headcase as far as swinging a bat is concerned.

Burrell has had a great season. Just the past two games he totally blew. And he sucks ass in the clutch. But I'm fine with him. Out of our 4 rbi guys, 2 of them are soft and 2 of them want to bat in the clutch. I guess it evens out.

me neither. but they could work around that. i dont think thome is as good anymore as he was in 2003-2004, but i find it really hard to beleive he is as bad as he was in the 1st half of 2005.

you only have to deal with leiberthal and bell for one more season. and you may not have to trade bell, make him a bench player. a highly paid bench guy. i think he could be more effective off the bench than as an every day 3B.

leiberthal is gonna be here, so let him sit in the 8hole all year. but bring in a young catcher to supplant him (maybe though burrell or abreu)

i think you need to trade burrell or abreu, not because they are bad players, but because you can not keep trading crap for crap. trade burrell or abreu (again, not both just one). and then move Howard to the OF, that way Thome, if he regains his form, can play everyday, along with howard, and then you have your power guys. i cant see why they couldnt convert ryan howard to the OF, they did it successfully with Burrell.

like i said, i think they are close, and this isnt really all that much tinkering. i do think utley/howard can be the guys to bring the right leadership to the team.

they still need to spend some $$ to get a #1 pitcher in here.

yeah, abreu's numbers are great, but where is he late in a big game?  in the corner sucking his thumb.  he's not a winner and never will be.  he has great value around the league because of his numbers.  trade him for a front-line starter, third baseman, or catcher.

Funny, but still, despicable.

Hey, he could have said, "Treat that question the same way you treat a rape victim when they walk into the room. Throw her clothes at her and tell her she's dead if she calls the cops." Now that would have been despicable.

If they hold on tonight, they only need to lose 2 out of 3 to the Cubs, which I don' t think is out of the question at all.

Watch the Cubs do it for us, but the Phillies lose against Washington.

Yes, I realize he's no spring chicken. So I should've said "he'd be our CF for the forseeable future".

I luv me sum Torii Hunter though. Probably my favortite non-Phil in MLB. There are rumors that the Twins will trade him because his salary next year is too much for the frugal Twinkies.

You know I am a Bobby A fan. I defended him a lot this year and it still bothers me to hear him get blasted like he does. He ain't perfect but he does not deserve the wrath that he gets from WIP and some Phils fans.

However, I would entertain the idea of trading him or Pat Burrell, whichever can get you more via trade. We need a top-of-the-rotation starter. And I think one of these guys is the best trading chip.

C - Sign a defensive minded C...I don't care if he has a light bat (Marz said this yesterday) and release Mike Lieberthal or he'd be on expensive ass backup.

1B - Thome ( you know no one wants him and if they do, the Phils will have to eat alot of his salary. And if Belland/or LIeby are jettisoned, they cannot eat 3 players salary)

2B - Utley

3B - Hello, free agent or trade. Goodbye MDS' role model and hero.

SS - James Calvin Rollins

LF - Ryan Howard

CF - Torii Hunter

RF - Bobby Abreu

Granted that is a LH heavy lineup, but what else are you going to do? Unless they trade Bobby and Pat, this is how it would have to be. Because I would give Victorino a shot in RF and bat him 1st or 2nd.

SP1 - Acquire via trade
SP2 - Jon Lieber
SP3 - Brett Myers
SP4 - Randy Wolf (when he comes back)
SP5 - Corey Lidle

Not re-signing Billy Wagner is going to be a BAD, BAD, BAD move. We're going to be stuck with some lameass...watch. Mark my words.

He'd be no different than Floyd or Ramirez...

I wonder if they'd give it another shot after seeing more of him this year.  He's more nimble and has more speed than they originally thought.  2 triples in one week?  :o

Marzano was WIP today and he said that's what he's hearing from them down there, that they might give him another shot in LF

Yep, an I am all for that.

He also said that the people he spoke to said only these players are untouchable...

Rollins
Utley
Howard
Myers

Everyone else will be shopped.

Then that genius Mike Missinell says he wants "The Nicaraguan Nightmare" Vicente Padilla as the closer. I like Padilla, but I would shop him via trade for a 3B or C.

i like Mike Miss more than most, when you can get past the fact that most of the stuff he says is just to rile up the fans, he's pretty enjoyable to listen to, IMO.

Conlin also suggested the Padilla/closer thing today in his column.  you had always heard when they got Padilla that he could be a closer.

the one thing that concerns me is still J-Roll, he's great defensively and the hitting streak is great.  but at the end of last year, we all thought that he figured out the leadoff spot, and it was clear this year that he didn't.  they need somebody who can get on base more regularly.

Yes, I was briefly on the "Vicente as a closer" wagon. However if they do go get a #1 type guy and Wolf comes back then they have nowhere to put Crazy Vicente. If Wolf is out until July, then Robinson Tejeda can fill in at #5 and Lidle at #4.

I would use Padilla as trade bait. Teams were scouting him hard before the deadline. Use that bait (as pitching reigns supreme in the market) to get a 3B or C.

Rollins is miscast as a lead-off guy. I am a huge JRoll fan and I do not dispute that. But just because he is forced to bat there he shouldn't be penalized because he's not the prototypical leadoff guy. He'd be great in the 6th, 7th 8th or 2nd hole.

i agree with you partially when you say he shouldn't be penalized for being miscast as a leadoff guy.

J-Roll's skill set is such that he should try to be an effective leadoff hitter.  It appears to me that he doesn't care about being that.  He just wants to swing freely and hit a lot of flyballs.  I think that if he really wanted to, he could be a teriffic leadoff hitter, but he doesn't seem to want to be that.  So, I put some blame on the managers who keep putting him there, and I put some blame on Rollins.

Why are career .280 hitters hired as hitting coaches?

I've always found that strange.  How about hiring guys who hit .330?  I'm fairly certain Rod Carew isn't working anywhere.  How about hiring him?  Or Tony Gwynn, for that matter.  I know he digs coaching at San Diego State but how about interviewing him for the manager's job this offseason?  He could be the manager and hitting coach.

Just a thought.

Milt was a .274 career hitter, career .335 OBP, never drew more than 42 walks and never hit more than 42 extra base hits in a season. Shouldn't a hitting coach be a GOOD hitter, instead of a slightly below AVERAGE hitter?

AND, Gross was actually a markedly better hitter. In just about every statistical way.

1. Howard can't play LF. He's too big and slow. We would become the Red Sox without the pitching and no DH. I don't like it. Eat some salary if you have to, but Howard is going to have to be your firstbasemen on opening day next year. I love Thome, but it just isn't gonna work. Shame, but such is life.

2. Torri Hunter is an injury waiting to happen. I think 1 out of the past 4 years he's played an entire season. He hits about .260 and obviously is a spectacular defensive outfielder. But he always gets hurt diving for balls and what not. Not to mention, Lofton/Michaels can be an effective platoon for another year, Shane Victorino deserves a look at CF, and Chris Roberson is near major league ready. My thinking was to keep CF in house this year, then give Roberson the job next year. But, if Roberson and/or Victorino can be packaged into a deal with Burrell or Thome for a frontline SP, I would be all for it. Only thing is, getting Hunter would be the only way I could see Howard in left. Be sorta like Andruw Jones with Chipper Jones and John Kruk with Lenny Dykstra. But Howard played some LF and simply couldn't do it.

3. I was orginally for Padilla as a closer, thought he had the stuff for it. But the guy is insane. I'm tired of his act. I'd like to go in a different direction with him. Some team out there would give us a quality bench player or relief pitcher for Padilla. You can then have competition for the 5th spot with people on the roster (Tejeda, Floyd, Brito) and sign someone to be the ace or near ace (Myers, Lieber, and someone just as good as them would be fine) quality.

And lets hope the person making these decision is not Ed Wade.

He has all winter to learn the position.  It's not as if someone's asking him to learn how to pitch, for God's sake.

The guy's a keeper.  If they can't resolve the Thome situation or if Big Jim comes back healthy, they have to do something with Howard.  LF seems like a reasonable alternative.

Manny sucks in LF. Actually, he's worse than sucking. It's a disgrace to the sport to see him in left. Floyd is slimmer and quicker than Howard.

I don't think Howard would be a good idea in left. #1 you don't have a stellar defensive CF or RF to make him ground. #2 you need someone better at 3B to help with bloopers. #3 does he even have the arm for LF? Can he throw anyone out? #4 do you want the entire middle of the order to be lefthanded? #5 is Thome even healthy? Trade Burrell only to find out Thome still belongs on the DL.

I don't like the idea.

Here are my thoughts, for what they're worth:

1.   Trade Thome (his back will get no better at 35 than it is now) to an AL team and get something for him.  Howard deserved the starting 1B job next year.
2.  Trade Lieberthal for a sack of monkey semen for all I care.  I really wish they had made Pratt the starter this season to keep Lieberthal from vesting.  Bring in a good defensive catcher that will hit .250.  At least he'd be good defensively, which is more than we get from Lieberthal.
3.  Eat the contract, send Bell away.  I'd rather watch Juan Richardson butcher third next season than see Bell another season.
4.  GET A FRONTLINE STARTER.  Trade for one, sign one, I don't care.
5.  Re-sign Wagner.  Phils need an ace reliever next season.
6.  Torii Hunter is one of my all-time favorite players.  He's exciting to watch and a really nice person to boot.  I saw him playing FSL A-ball for the Ft. Myers Miracle 11 years ago, and in Spring Training each year, and he really hasn't changed a bit.  That said, I don't think he'd be a good fit for the Phils' lineup.  He'd bring another 100+ Strikeout, <.330 OBP bat to a lineup that is already saturated from those type of hitters.  The Phils need a high OBP guy that can hit either #1 (ideally) or #2.  He's probably pass 30 HRs playing in CBP, but the Phils' offense is all-or-nothing already.  They need someone that can make their run-scoring more consistent.  If he didn't get hurt so dang much, I'd say keep Lofton there (.392 OBP) and play him everyday. Heck, the platoon of Lofton and Michaels (.399 OBP) are probably fine for the CF/Leadoff position.  They should hit leadoff and allow Rollins to hit #2.

Keep:
1.  Rollins
2.  Abreu
3.  Howard
4.  Utley
5.  Myers
6.  Wagner (Probably a pipe dream at this point)

Get rid of:
1.  David ^$#@#^#@^&#@*& Bell
2.  Lieberthal
3.  Tomas Perez

Trade if it gets you needed parts:
1.  Burrell (I just see him having a down year next season- he's not consistent):  If Burr
2.  Thome (if keeping Burrell)

Working lineup for next season:
1.  Lofton/Michaels platoon CF
2.  Rollins SS
3.  Abreu
4.  Thome/Burrell (Whichever we keep)
5.  Utley
6.  Howard
7.  New 3B/C
8.  New 3B/C
9.  Pitcher

Starting Rotation:
1.  New Pitcher (PLEASE!)
2.  Lieber
3.  Myers
4.  Lidle/Padilla/Floyd

Fearless Prediction:  Madson will see time in the rotation next season.

% Chance of Wade/Manuel being fired:  25

If Wade if fired Fearless (and Clueless  :D) prediction #2:  Mike Schmidt is new GM.  Would it make sense?  No.  But remember- it's the Phillies.  He'd have to be better than Wade.

Yay Cubs!

If they tie...who the hell is going to start the 1 game playoff? Padilla?!?

But the good thing is that Azzholes used up Pettitte, Clemens and Oswalt (on Sunday).

Padilla vs. Backe to go to the playoffs if they tie! :-D

And the Phils BP is about toasted, fellas. Crispy effin' toast, those guys.

We're going to see Rheal Cormier in a big spot tomorrow and/or Sunday. :'(

Yea the pen is pretty much cooked. Except for Aaron Fultz. But he's not allowed to pitch in clutch spots. Manuel will wear out Urbina and Wagner every game. It would help if Myers and Lieber can work a CG, or if the offense can smack the shtein out of Patterson and Carrasco so we dont have to worry about it. Well, thats not how the Phillies role. 1 run games is the only way to go.

Wags was actually fine today. Made 1 bad pitch to Byrd and a stupid hit batter was the other baserunner. He then gave up a weak groundball and a pop up. He's fine. Its Urbina I'm worried about. Utley made a nice play in the 7th to stop a rally. Why didnt Fultz come in and force the lefty-lefty matchup on Wilkerson? Because Manuel only trusts two guys at this point. Thats redonculous. Fultz has been fantastic. Use him.

Yes, El Loco de Vince Padilla will go monday against Brandon Backe. I'm not sure what I want more, the Phillies losing within these next two games or getting to monday and losing in some extruciatingly frusturating form against the Astros. Were 0 for our last 12 against them. We knew what happened when they were here last time. I'll probably kill myself during that game.

Best case scenario:

Myers pitches 7 strong tomorrow and the Phils put up a huge lead, something like 12-4 or 9-1 so Aqualino Lopez can finish it off.

But with John Patterson pitching, he's a tough matchup despite being a RHP. But we have to hope for a goddamn blowout to save the bullpen. I hope Utley and Howard feast on Patterson. Bobby A is really hurting. His shoulder and his leg are killing him and he isn't doing shtein right now.

I'd strongly consider playing Victorino in RF tomorrow night. But we know Manuel won't.

On Sunday we'll need Lieber to pitch a CG or 8 strong. Or like I said...hope for another f'ing blowout so he can get out of there in the 6th. Carrasco pitching gives thema shot at a blowout. Better shot at blowing them out with him on the mound versus Patterson.

Also...I FARGING HATE 4PM games on Saturdays.

Really odd that Fox moved the game considering only those in Philly, Houston, Chicago and DC areas are getting it. MLB is stupid, so they don't have DH's on saturdays....not even at this time of the year. So we won't get the Yankees/Sox game here, and really nobody is getting a 4pm game. The only plus from this is Fox can give us constant updates of the Astros game and if the Phillies finish first, we can go to the end of the Astros game.

I'm feeling good things from Myers today. Good thing about Clemens going is that he's coming off an injury and probably can lost longer than the 6th or 7th. The last thing I want to see is us needing to win and needing Roy Owalt to lose. I figured the Astros could lose the Rodriguez start, the Clemens start and maybe one of the Pettitte/Oswalt. Well....so far things look like they might fall into place.

Clemens tonight.  Myers too.

Amazingly, they both have identical 12-8 records.

Sweet Jesus, please, please...

QuoteClemens is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA in four starts this month, and he has been bothered with a sore hamstring. Oswalt is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts against the Cubs this season
