Title: Social Media
Post by: Diomedes on July 18, 2011, 04:13:11 PM
I skipped Facebook entirely.

But I luv me sum Google.  So I'm trying Google+ on for size.

Anyone else?

What do you think?

I'm having a good time divvying everyone I know into different groups and giving them all names.   I can't wait for my "Friends 2" circle of people to find out they didn't make the cut for "Friends."

I think I'll go make a :CF circle now.

I'm on an Android phone and I use gmail and their calendar for everything.  And Picasa.  It feels like part of the suite.  The ease of setting groups of people is cool.

I'm just not sure I care to maintain the page and if I actually want to read everything other people "share" with me.  Might be good to just stay out altogether, I don't know.

Google's most recent attempt at making a social networking site.  They've tried and failed like 4 times already.

It's currently being tested.

The moment I go on facebook is the moment everyone stops using it.

Realisticaly, the only social media outlet I subscribe to is CF.

How can Facebook and google compete with CF. Really.

I've been using Google Music on my laptop and phone. More convenient than swapping my memory card around all the time.

I've heard a lot of people touting Google+, but I've also heard some negative things, especially with regard to their terms of service. Like Facebook, they have a CYA clause that allows them to do whatever they want with the stuff you post. It's not such a big deal for the casual user, but when it comes to things like photographers trying to manage the intellectual property rights to their work, it can be something of a nightmare.

For now, I can manage Facebook okay. I really don't need to have yet another "service" giving me additional headaches.

Trojan Spreading Through Facebook Replaces Antivirus Programs: Security researchers warn about a trojan spreading through Facebook and having an unusually sophisticated payload which involves replacing the legit antivirus programs used by its victims. The malware hijacks the Facebook sessions of its victims and sends messages to their friends via the website's chat function. Once installed on the computer, the Trojan blocks notifications from the firewall, Windows update or the legit antivirus and displays a pop-up asking the user to reboot the system. The Trojan uses the bcdedit.exe utility to force the computer into Safe Mode upon reboot, where the un-installation of the legit antivirus starts. Unlike most malware, this malware configures itself to run in Safe Mode so it is always in control of the machine. The computer is rebooted again and a fake antivirus mimicking the real one is executed. This is meant to trick users into believing that they are still protected, while the Trojan freely downloads and installs more malware in the background.

when you follow someone on twitter do you get a notification when they post a new message...something similar to how you get an email from CF when someone makes a new post on a thread?

or do you have to physically navigate to their twitter page and see if theres anything new
Title: Re: Social Media

You go to Twitter and see all the message from people you follow in chronological order. You can set up lists to clump together messages from groups of people if you want.

Seeing this thread made me chuckle.... I posted that I liked the Google + app on my phone, because of the automatic photo upload feature. Still do, mostly.

That said, I took some awesome compromising pics of the wife last week and deleted them later because that's how I roll. At least I thought I did, until I went to show a buddy of mine something the next day, and the pictures were splashed across my Google page. Yikes.

thats my biggest problem with facebook is that nothing is ever really deleted. when you use the facebook messaging and then say delete the message... the next time you send the same person a message... the whole exchange pops right back up. or you have to delete things on the mobile app... and then on the website itself.. it's annoying.

google and facebook are all about collecting as much info about you as possible.

and i signed up for google+.. i don't get it. it'll sit there colling internet dust just like my facebook page

And if you happen to leave your facebook page open ona friends computer or on your phone and your friend gets ahold of it....chances are youre suddenly a huge fan of having louisville sluggers in your various bodily openings, at least according to your status.

timeline (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzPEPfJHfKU)

The new profile page looks pretty cool, and there's a timeline bar on the right so you don't have to keep clicking "Older Posts" to find something from a while ago.  They're also going to add "Listen" and "Watch" features to let you know when somebody's listening to music or watching Netflix or Hulu or whatever, and may allow you to jump in on it (pending privacy law revision)...

the shtein that absolutely infuritates me is when i see someone thank someone for dinner the other night or ask them what time do they wanna meet at the bar tonight....cant you farging email or call the person for this

at least the peoplee that post "on my way to dinner tonight" dont hide the fact that they are an attention whore...its awful but theres some sort of respect there because they are just so in your face about it...but the others are not really thanking their friend for a good time they are masking the fact that they want everyone to know what they did under the guise of a thank you to someone they could have told directly

why dont you just block them...unless you dont really give a shtein about them to begin with?

i have every single one of my friends
even my dearest ones
even my girl
completely blocked
so nothing hits my page in anyway
except private messages

and i only keep people as friends who i communicate with or see on a regular basis

also id sooner cut my gib off than post anything on my page...cept pictures....and i never publish those

hosting pictures and getting in touch with lost friends or family is the only thing i really get using facebook for

the best thing facebook ever did was incorporate your friends list with aim so it just automatically melds the two together as thats where i do all my online commucation outside of email

The weird part of facebook is that I have friends, who never initiate a call to me, suddenly have communication with each other and know what the farg is up. Just the other day, a buddy who is always too busy to call, so it's me that has to pick up the phone (its been like this forever), is farging chatting it up with everyone else who is too phone-phobic. I'm the odd man out?

Jesus what is wrong with people. People really don't like the nuisance of interacting with people live. farg. I thought texting was bad.

Facebook changed their settings a while back, you couldn't block someone's posts.  Felt like a fleshpop, but I was hammered and said farg it.

Thats pretty much it for me too.  I'll throw up some pics of the dog for family, or shtein that we're doing.  It's an easier way to send pictures rather than email.

this pretty much sums it up...and its makes me sad...now its like what the best possible way to tell the most people a little bit instead of telling a few people a lot

facebook is like that person on the train who in appearance is talking to the person next to them but in reality wants everyopne on their car to hear about them so they yell when they talk

Agreed.

Also, it gives that little farg, the anti-social, or the socially inept, more power, and enough of an outlet to think they themselves the friendliest farg on earth and their lives are great. You know this when any time you talk to them, they reference something on facebook.

farg them.

Sound like a bunch of old men talking about children and their new fangled phones. Write a damn letter!

I'm not going to call or email someone for a 3 or 4 sentence quick conversation. Waste of time, and yes my generation finds it weird to do so. I'm not going to call my ex's friend from HS that I still talk to about music since we have similar tastes, to talk to her about music. It's farging weird. I'd much rather send her a youtube link on facebook, and then talk about what we like/dislike about the song. Then I'll see her out at the bars and we'll have a longer conversation about life in general. If other people don't want to see it on facebook, they are welcome to not read or hit the little "x" at the top of the posts that hides them from their view.

"Hello?"
"Hey it's me.  You know that picture you posted where your mom is holding the baby?"
"Yeah."
"I like it."
"OK...and...?"
"That's all.  Talk to you later.  Bye!"

yeah, that's so much better

Yes, I agree that it does fill a niche of communication that real life can make difficult sometimes. I guess my problem is when someone's primary method of communication becomes facebook. Worse when they have a phone and they're on facebook.

I'm not gonna call my buddies for a 2 minute convo on what they're doing this weekend either. Sure, I'll call them the night of to see where they'er going/should I bring beer/etc....but now, on a Thursday, I'll write on my friends wall and ask him what he's getting into Monday night for the game.

I get bombarded with maudlin shtein all the time too but there's a rare nugget (see abortion clinic costume photo) that someone posts that make the rest tolerable.

It's kinda like here, actually.  The Victoria Secret chick thing was awesome and made the rest of it much less vomit-inducing.

who says hello on email?

if you have a picture email it to a friend...even sending a picture on facebook is ok altho most of the time its to draw attention to yourself not because you want to really show someone...but whatever it you need 400 of your "friends" to see it more power to you

the much larger problem is when people post on their facebook page for all to see "heading up to walmart to buy a frame for this awesome picture of little jenny i have"

My pet peeve on Facebook is the wall posts that are better shared privately.

i.e.
Every single "Happy Birthday" wall post means two things:
1. Happy Birthday
2. Look how nice of a friend I am for wishing you happy birthday

i forgot about those....my god are they awful

dont farging wish someone happy birthday on facebook if you wouldnt in real life...and even if you would do it on the phone or in person where it really means something

tho i will say most of the blame goes to the person who publishes their birthday....theres only one reason to do that and its to get as many possible facebook birthdays as they can

QuoteHi this is Linda, (Michael's mom) If you want to be his friend...do not pick him up, take him to a bar, or believe that he drinks like a normal 22 year old. Anyone that truly knows him knows he has a drinking problem. He has been missing for 2 days now & out of control. Please help us by not supporting his habit. I don't want to find him dead from alcohol poisoning & I'm afraid that's where he is headed. He has a family that loves him & only wants the best for him, I wish someone could make him realize he has a problem. Thanks for listening. He's a good kid and a smart one at that. I'm semi-tempted to help him but would feel like a hypocrite considering I still drink like I'm 22. He maybe weighs 160 pounds so it's not like he can drink that much. The few posts before that one were one at 3 AM saying he was stuck down at Temple and needed a ride to Bensalem followed by a picture of him drunk with a bandana on his head, 40 in one hand, and a pistol in his other one saying Happy MLK day. Like I said, good kid.

If what the dad said was the correct version of the story (as in, she only has to make her own bed and sweep a couple floors), then I'm glad he made the video. The only thing I disagree with is the very obvious threatening gesture of shooting her laptop repeatedly at the end. Dude made his point, no need to throw in the "oh by the way, remember i have this gun" shtein.

All parents are hypocritical.  I swear all the time (granted, not in front of my kids) but I get on my daughter every time she or one of her friends swears on her facebook page.  When she's capable of supporting herself, she can swear all she wants.  Until then, my way or the highway.

That's a bit of a red herring. Facebook issues don't break up marriages. Pre-existing issues make it onto Facebook, just like before that it was cell phone logs, etc. Facebook itself doesn't break people up, but it's a public forum where the light can shine on existing issues, and it's a historical reference that can be used in court. It's a form of documenting issues.

When Jimmy Buffett writes a song about cheating on your significant other using facebook, I'll believe you.

Cheaters gonna cheat.  FB might make it a little easier to do it but I don't beleive for an instant that some guy who is scouring FB looking for some tail wouldn't be looking to cheat if he didn't have the internet.

Do people really look to cheat or does it just happen?

Guy 1: "Hey, what you doing tonight?"

Guy 2: "Nothing much...I had a long week, I was in the mood for some cheating. Wanna come with?"

Guy 1: "Naw...I'm cool, I'm just going to make love to my boyfriend. Wanna come with?"

I belong to some Marine group on Facebook.  I got an invite from a friend to join about a year ago, so I did, although I'm not sure why I stayed in the group because it's mostly a bunch of awful old vets who are so far to the right that they'd probably cut off their left hand simply because it's on the left.  Anyway, I check the place out every now and then mostly just to rile some feathers.  I checked in today and noticed that a guy posted a YouTube link to a video of random Vietnam footage with CCR's Fortunate Son as the accompanying soundtrack. It also had a dozen or so "likes" and about 7 or 8 comments from guys saying how great the song was and how it and how proud they are to be Americans, etc, etc.  And 1 guy even said that he loved the song "back in 'Nam" and that it's been his favorite song for the last 40 years.

So I left a comment asking if any of them ever bothered to actually listen to the lyrics or if they realized that the song is actually a big FU to the government, the war and to the rich.  About 5 minutes later the entire thread was deleted.  lol

QuoteCongress will be voting on passing a bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks. Please flood congress with your calls and emails telling them to VOTE "YES" before they vote tomorrow! CLICK HERE TO CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE ----> http://ht.ly/cC0B6
Here is what I sent to my congressman.

Please Read before voting on H.R. 3803 tomorrow!
...
Mr. Aaron Schock,

If I was alive during Nazi Germany, I would like to think that I would have considered the Jews equal human beings. I hope I would have stood up to the Nazis to defend the lives of the Jews. I hope that I would have stood at the barbed-wire doors of concentration camps with signs protesting the murder of innocent persons.

If I was alive here in America during the Pre-Civil Rights Movement era, I would like to think that I would have also considered African-Americans to be equal human beings with equal rights. I hope that I would have stood at the side of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man of great Christian Virtue, and helped him make a difference sooner.

If I you were alive during the largest Genocide in human history, what would you do? Would you be on the side of innocent children that are being aborted secretly and shamefully everyday? Or would you be a Noble Leader who took charge and made their vote count. Will you help or hinder the morality of this once Great Country. Will you please help lead us?

Please Vote "Yes" on H.R. 3803 (the DC bill prohibiting abortions after 20 wks)

1. Genocide icehole (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/genocide)
B. I'm not a historian, but I'm pretty confident a person protesting the concentration camps would have been shot immediately.

I actually would have agreed with banning abortions after 20 weeks since 5 months seems like plenty enough time to decide if the pregnancy should be terminated; however, after reading this stupid argument, I felt obliged to contact the congressman to ask he vote no on h.r. 3803.

Title: Re: Social Media

They don't.  Regular uploaders don't have ads on their videos.  The big networks like NBC or CBS that post content have it prior to their videos and so do a lot of musicians and such.  It's been that way for quite some time.  But if you're wanting to watch home video of some kid getting hit in the nuts with a soccer ball or something, then you're probably not getting a commercial.

Some companies do reach out to the most popular YouTube users though and pay them to advertise on their videos, but that's a pretty small segment of YouTube users.

I'm guessing that you're pulling up music from the artists' YouTube pages?  If so, that's why you're getting the ads.

I know you've got to have a pretty deep music collection.  Why are you listening to music on YouTube instead of just using whatever media player you have on your computer?

yes thats correct, nothing shows up on your page unless it's your own tweet or something you've retweeted. but they will get a notification of their @name being mentioned in a tweet.

also if you're doing what i think you're doing get one for me and i'll stick around for a day or two.

Lame story.

I belong to an alumni group for my military academy on facebook.  Yesterday some dude who graduated in the 80s said that he has 2 yearbooks to give away to anyone who wants them because he is moving and can't take much with him.  I jokingly said "Where the hell are you moving to that you can't make room for 2 year books?  Jail?"

His response - "Yes."  Found out the dude's going away for quite a few years on some kind of fraud conviction.  Not sure of the details but I guess he's getting fitted for his orange jumpsuit pretty soon.  Nice.

Remember that story about a buddy of mine who died and his wife still leaving him I Love You notes on his FB?  Of course you don't.  So here's a refresher....

Quote from: Sgt PSN on July 17, 2012, 10:48:20 PM

So is it cool to block or unfriend a dead guy?

I never "unfriended" the dude but I got a FB reminder that today is his birthday.  Checked his page and saw dozens and dozens of birthday wishes.  Ok, so aside from the fact that it's really farging weird to say Happy Birthday to a dead dude, one of the comments left on his page was:

QuoteHappy Birthday!  We miss you so much but I bet your having the BEST birthday ever with Jesus.  God Bless You!

Reading that actually made my brain melt a little.

Wanted to check that site out but they require your street address as part of sign up.  No thanks.  Don't see why they want or need more than a zip code.  Not a big deal though.  I doubt there's more than 5 people from my town who use it....if even that many.

A really good friend of mine has a kid who is like 11 years old and is already extremely tech savvy.  So she let him have a FB account that he gets on like maybe once or twice a week.  This is what he has to say today:

QuoteGlasses come in tomorrow. Getting them on friday. Mom, go get me a wendys chicken sandwich with no mayo.

I'm seriously laughing my ass off at this.

No, I mean the kid knows how to fix xbox's and build iphones and shtein.  He's a little savant or something because he's never been taught anything, just figures the stuff out on his own.  Really smart kid.

Anyway, I found humor in it because the kid never asks for anything and then just randomly demands his mom to go to Wendy's via facebook.

Title: Re: Social Media
Post by: Munson on March 12, 2014, 10:29:35 AM
Basically a giant internet message board filled with nerds of all ilks. There's a "subreddit" (specific message board) for nearly everything you can think of, and many different subreddits dedicated to the same subject sometimes, just with a different name. It can be a good place to find news or info, but also can do some zesty things (like accuse the wrong people of being the Boston bombers last year)

Quote from: PhillyPhreak54 on April 25, 2014, 08:13:35 AMI don't understand Dio's rant.

There is only one legit use for the blind copy.

legit: mass email.  send message to yourself, blind copy everyone else.  everyone gets the message, everyone knows who sent it.  no one's email adress is reveal to anyone else.  no one has to look at a long list of email adresses in the body of the messgae.  etc.  if you send mass emails and list everyone in the "to" or "cc" field, you are an icehole and should expire posthaste

not legit:  all over uses.  principally, being sneaky...send a note to some people but blind copy others, so that the people whose receipt is visible don't know that someone else got the message too, while the blind copied people know the full distribution.  dick move, counter productive, don't do it.

FB is still incredibly popular with the 40+ age group...especially among the MA crowd.  It's what most people in that age demographic are familiar with and what all of their friends use and they aren't going to change to the tweets or snapchat because change isn't something that crowd is particularly fond of.    My farging grandmother got on FB like a year ago for farg sake.  She's 84.  But that's what all her family in Tennessee uses because they're all old and like to share Jesus memes so they can go to heaven.

And young people are still using the hell out of it too.  Both my daughters are on it regularly.

Pretty much. I cringe when I hear Ma and Pa redneck around here talking about Facebook and what they saw/read on there.

It's died off for the younger crowd and it is nothing but a cesspool.

Yesterday there was a report (ended up being false - FAKE NEWZZZ) about a shooting in one of the hospitals here. I made the mistake of looking at the comments on the local news page and holy mother of God...it didn't even gradually devolve into the racist and hate talk. People went ham right off the bat.

These fools go from zero to hate in a second and it turns out to be false. So they talked all that shtein for no reason. Hateful fargs.

2/3rds of america has a facebook page...im not sure how many of them are active users but its something most people are going to have. the kids have moved to snapchat and other things im not aware of to talk to each other and send pictures of their dicks.

I think a lot of kids have facebook and use it on the regular, but snapchat is definitely the in vogue social media platform for most high school through college age kids.  My kids have both and they use FB daily or every other day but snapchat is definitely their primary means of communicating with their friends. They probably only maintain their fb because of family.

Yeah I have a lot of former students who have graduated that use/check Facebook, but I know from their habits in school that they're on Instagram and Snapchat way more often. Facebook also becomes much more useful in college when you're trying to find campus events or friend that weirdo at the party who tried to bang you last week.

Everyone my age still primarily uses Facebook as their main social media.

yea snapchat deletes everything after like 24 hours or something, and it doesnt have a website -- just the app. so its perfect for keeping away adults and sending dick pictures. which is what its for. its for teenagers to send dick pics to each other.

Sure, you want current or pics from when she was some sort of baker or something when she was a young woman  in Germany. I assume she was a baker or some sorts. She doesn't talk about it much, just says she was was an oven operator for the Nazis.  Hell of a cook, I can tell you that.

edited for you. when it comes to holocaust humor you gotta be quick. its not a funny subject so the humor is shock value, and the longer you hammer home a shock value joke the worse it is. so quick in, quick out. you had a good first sentence and didnt need the second.

in short, leave the comedy to us. you do the manual labor.

Things are pretty wild at Twitter.  They've closed their offices until Monday.  Musk's "extremely hardcore" ultimatum has proven the downside of the device:  hundreds are leaving.  Apparently, Twitter don't even know how many people have decided to leave because most of HR quit too.  There are accounts that the service has literally zero engineers available to monitor or repair critical functions of the site, effectively rendering it a walking dead service that will coast until something goes wrong, and then just stop, with no one to mind the repair.

Someone mentioned that this fiasco is actually a well-engineered process to destroy one of the few online platforms that had some semblance of democracy remaining.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Thiel and Musk and the rest of the fascist cadre of billionaire nazi fargs did this deliberately and maliciously.  $44B is chump change in the grand scheme of things when complete hegemonic domination is the aim, and it clearly is for those motherfargers.

Regarding Reddit today, with much of the platform "dark" in protest to a change they've made, requiring third party apps that, to my ignornant way of understanding it, bombard their servers with billions of "API calls" daily:

How can Reddit continue to exist if they have to pay bills for servers that do nothing but supply Reddit content to other apps, which aggregate and filter it?  Can't get ad revenue from clicks on other apps.  Can't show real traffic and "exposure" numbers to the advertisers, who are afterall the ones paying the bills...

Is Reddit demanding a crazy amount of money from these apps? Are the users simply a mob of spoiled fools who think this shtein happens for free?

Reddit just announced a price increase on their API that these apps use that make it impossible for the developers of the apps that use it to keep paying for it. The apps are free, and they contain tools used by thousands of unpaid moderators that the official app doesn't have.

Reddit was built on a whole lot of unpaid labor, and it'll probably just remove the mods from the most popular communities, replace them with new ones, and just keep chugging along.

What I'm trying to suss out is whether the uproar is that:

A.) They've gone from free access to, you gotta pay to mitigate our cost

Or

B.)  They've gone from free access to, we're turning this into a profit center.

MFers on line acting like it's the latter...I'm not sure I"m buying that.

I don't know what they were paying before, but they're being priced out to get everyone back in the official app before they become a publicly traded company.

Elon is having a tough day today.  I would feel sorry for the racist fargface but unfortunately the person making it tough on him is Mark Zuckerberg.

Kinda feels like watching a bully getting beaten up by a slightly less despicable bully.

Oh well.  Threads isn't a bad site.  I hope they keep the Nazis off at least for a while. The disclaimers they're adding to mutts like Don Jr. are pretty funny though.

I logged into Facebook today at my wife's request to look at something happening here locally.  Anyway....

A photo of all of us at the first game after T.O. joined the Cowboys popped up.

That was the infamous "let's hang and burn a jersey" fiasco at C-6.

We were all so much goddamn younger back then.
