Not too fired up about this one. ILB/OLB who had some injury issues.

Had a nice combine.

Smart and loves the game of football. Scouts say the staff at Texas raves about the way Hicks lifts, prepares for games and takes care of his body. Has football character in spades.

I wanna know how many LBs Chip is planning to keep.

Barwin - starting OLB, not going anywhere for a while
Graham - starting OLB, not going anywhere for a while
Ryans - starting ILB, extended through 2016 but turns 31 in July and has the ACL history
Alonso - starting ILB, not going anywhere for a while
Kendricks - UFA after the season, probably won't re-sign at this point, Chip says they aren't trading him (and why would they unless it's for another player or a 2016 pick?)
Smith III - still exists, not going anywhere yet
Jones - signed a 2-yr deal this offseason for cheap, 2nd-oldest LB at 29
Hicks - just drafted
Acho - RFA after the season, OK depth
Goode - UFA after the season, OK depth
Braman - extended through 2016, needed on special teams
Long - later
Hepburn - later

Are they planning to keep 10 guys from this group?  If so, that takes away a depth spot somewhere else.  If they're only keeping 9, that means 2 out of Jones, Acho and Goode are gone.  If they're only keeping 8, then all of them are gone (or Kendricks gets dealt and Chip is a liar again)

lol at 10 linebackers on an nfl roster...has any team ever kept ten?

hes going to keep 7-8 depending on special teams

brandon graham is an edge situtaional pass rusher not really a linebacker and certainly not a starting lb over kendricks

I'd probably rather have Smith I or Smith II playing than Smith III, but I'm probably also in the minority that don't want Smith III cut. After that kind of investment you need to give at least a couple of years to see what happens. Also, Graham will likely get a good chunk of his time on the D line like last year so I wouldn't fully count him as a LB.
Title: Re: Jordan Hicks, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on May 02, 2015, 12:37:12 AM
you have the four starters and hicks...everything else is garbage and could go...agreed with smith that he probably stays because of the investment in him...but its not going to be difficult to keep an additional two off that travesty of a list...not sure what planet easy is on keepin 10

I know its 3-4 vs 4-3 but we go from Andy openly hating LBs to Chip who collects them like mds collects Full House memorabilia

Acho is probably gone
I'd like to keep Goode - he's got some game and could replace the dope fiend Brama

Hopefully they will sign Kendricks to an extension

Braman isn't going anywhere though.  They love him on ST and extended him another year about 6 weeks ago

Graham came back as killa's replacement and is absolutely the starting OLB opposite Barwin.  They aren't paying an average of $5M/yr and giving a decent signing bonus to a 3rd down guy for the next four years.  Kendricks is gonna rotate with Ryans and Alonso inside until one of them blows out a body part again, and he can still be used outside if necessary.  So we agree on the first 6 LBs so far.  Hicks isn't going anywhere, so that's 7 (or 8 if you include Braman like I am).  So if that's the cutoff, then Jones, Acho and Goode are all outta here?

1. graham isnt an olb...he plays on the line and rushes the passer...that doesnt mean its only 3rd and longs but it means in certain situations...his base salary doesnt even make over 4 mil until 2017 and only makes 3 mil this year....the reason people were cool with his resigning in a defense that doesnt fit him (again he cant play olb in a 3-4) is because he was so cheap...on paper he might be an OLB but as far as it counts on the roster he will be a DL...for example maybe brandon bair vinny curry or taylor hart are cut because graham is really a DL

2. kendricks aint rotating with anyone if hes on the team

3. demeco right now is on the team only cause chip loves him as a leader....hes old one dimensional and is missing an achilles...hes a back up if he even makes the team

4.  outside chance of keeping 8...9 or ten is ludicrous

Title: Re: Jordan Hicks, Philadelphia Eagle

Graham is considered an OLB..how can this be disputed?

OLB - Barwin
DE - Cox
NT - Logan
DE - Thornton
OLB - Graham
ILB - Kendricks
ILB - Alonso
Title: Re: Jordan Hicks, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on May 02, 2015, 01:27:39 AM
it will be a combination....if demeco is healthy kendricks or kiko will move outside but thats a huge if...perhaps hicks bumps someone outside and other times as i said graham will be in...but he will be on the line to get to the qb

in a perfect world demeco retruns to form and plays inside on downs 1-2...putting kendricks outside...then on passing downs demeco leaves kendricks moves inside and they play hybrid 3-4/4-3 with graham on the edge rushing the passer and kiko barwin kendricks playing LB
Title: Re: Jordan Hicks, Philadelphia Eagle

OLB - Barwin
DE - Cox
NT - Logan
DE - Thornton
OLB - Graham
ILB - Kendricks
ILB - Alonso

because on passing downs they will play a 4-3

billy davis plays this hybrid all the time.....graham is basically replacing trent cole as the pash rusher in this defense
Title: Re: Jordan Hicks, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on May 02, 2015, 01:33:29 AM
but by roster designation he's an OLB
Title: Re: Jordan Hicks, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on May 02, 2015, 01:49:08 AM
but by roster designation he's an OLB

because nfl rosters dont have a "pass rusher" position...their position designations were created decades ago and are antiquated not having adapted to the advent of the 3-4 back in the day...if the eagles ran a 4-3 youd think brandon graham was all of a sudden a DE even tho hes doing the exact same thing on the field as he is in a 3-4

kevin greene is a perfect example...listed a lb but had like 120 career sacks...anyone who watched him knows he wasnt a lb
Title: Re: Jordan Hicks, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on May 02, 2015, 01:54:21 AM
an easier way of thinking about it is to say that brandon graham being on the roster is not keeping any of those guys on easy's list off the roster...he will be keeping a DL from making it...like i said taylor hart...brandon bair or most likely vinny curry
Title: Re: Jordan Hicks, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: AO1 on May 02, 2015, 05:37:03 AM
Davis runs a 3-4 but it's really a 4-3. The weak side lb almost always lines up in the predator role which is really just a DE who blitzes. He lines up like an lb but he rushes the passer same as a de does. It's another way to disguise the pass rusher. So you can call Graham an lb or a de it doesn't matter.

Not thrilled with this pick. Would have liked OL depth of even another db

I'm sure it's already been covered, but the Boykin trade made perfect sense in that they had a player in a contract year who was likely not going to resign (or even be offered a contract) so they shipped him off and got value in return rather than let him walk for nothing.  Sucks because he's a good player, but logical.

What's illogical about it is that the Eagles aren't in any kind of rebuild mode.  It would make perfect sense if this was a 4-12 team.  But they aren't.  They're in, or at least should be in, win now mode and need all the good players they have or can get.  A draft pick next year does nothing to improve their chances of competing for a SB this year.  If the nickel corner gets eaten up this year and is a primary reason for the Eagles at least not making a deep playoff run, then the trade will be nothing but a colossal failure.

even in a rebuild getting rid of a young talented homegrown player is not smart bidness
Title: Re: Jordan Hicks, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: Rome on September 06, 2015, 01:56:56 PM
It's appropriate if the coach doesn't think he's the sort of player he wants on his team.  I agree that Boykin is a good player and strictly from a talent perspective shipping him out seems like a stupid thing to do, but none of us have any idea of the real reason he was sent to Pittsburgh.

Kelly has no problem releasing or trading guys who don't buy in or don't fit the physical profile, though, and I don't see that as a weakness.  The guy is committed to doing it his way, and like it or not, this is what we have as a head coach on a team that we happen to be stupid or unfortunate to have to cheer for.

What's troubling is his dumping guys and not getting adequate replacements.  He has elsewhere on the roster, but CB looks like it's gonna be a disaster unless the no-names he's held onto end up producing.

Probably not, but there's nothing wrong with trading players for assets in their contract year if you don't think you can, or even want to resign them.  It's Hinkie Magic 101.

#Eagles standout ILB Jordan Hicks intends to sign with the #AZCardinals on 4-year deal worth $36M with $12M to sign, source said. $20M guaranteed.💰💰

Good player, would have liked to keep him...but thatís an absurd contract for a guy who canít stay healthy

Realistically the Cards contract is not on the same planet as what I think the Eagles would have been willing to pay. Sellers market for LBs and safeties right now, and better values to be had elsewhere on the field. But the Eagles are gonna take a step back at this position.

With Saquon and Elliott they will need a good mlb and I wouldn't depend on Hicks in any case. A good position to start fresh at.

Thatís nutty money for him

Talent wise itís not nutty at all.  But considering his injury history, itís absurd to guarantee him that much dough.  Then again they were the worst team in the NFL last year, so overpaying is probably a necessity.

This isnít a big loss at all anyway.  They can find a decent MLB in the draft.

Or they could cycle through another decade of Mark Simoneau/Omar Gaither/Stewart Bradley/Jamar Chaney...

Thatís nutty money for him

Itís actually not at all...sure it carries risk but thatís the gamble you take with the injury factor

at full strength tho he should outplay the money

he was outrageous in his one healthy year

Even with Hicks, whom I loved, LB corps needed to be addressed.  Bradham is a roller coaster, Grugier-Hill is a nice have to but not the answer.  C'mon Howie!!

He restructured his deal to stay so he'll be there same as always, in a sweatshirt on the sideline.
