Who is your daddy, and what does he do?

(Who is he and what position is he?)

He is a safety who is now a former Saint.

Why are you eating other peoples lunches? STOP IT!

meh

I mean, he's better than Chung which isn't saying much. He's only 26 years old and it's not like they're paying a lot or gave him a shteinload of money.

He's good in coverage and can tackle well. Doesn't excel at either. Davis's safeties don't fall into the SS/FS category, his safeties are interchangeable and can play both roles.

And since they're going this route, might as well sign another f/a safety for a similar price.

hes replacing nate allen not chung...chung only started like 9 games and wouldnt have had that many if the wolffman didnt get hurt

be interesting to see what they do with the other spot now

but yeah overall not a very overwhelming signing....but for only eight and  a half guaranteed its a really good value

Jenkins is a definite upgrade and seems more reasonable than the crazy $$ thrown around so far but he isn't Byrd.

He's got a ring and I have to think that if the Saints weren't in cap hell they would have re-signed his ass.

Or not.

This is good. Either they really need to upgrade at CB or get a very good rangy FS to compensate.

I know they say their safeties are interchangeable etc. but that wasn't the case last year at all, and they played a lot of single high on passing downs. Even on run downs they were usually staggered by 5 yards or more with Nate taking SS probably 90% of the snaps he played. That said I don't know they're making out better than bringing Allen back. He was pretty up and down but played better the second half of the year except for maybe the last 2 games.

I wouldn't mind bringing Allen back, he was good last year, didn't get beat deep, and will probably sign for cheap since there are so many safeties on the market.

Yeah he will give them range, he played CB at Ohio State and was on the 4x4 relay team. He is just type of player they need. He did struggle his first few years in NO, but really picked it up the last couple years.

Really? I'd think it would be the opposite - that if he is a better corner than he'd be better as a FS centerfield than underneath. If that's true, it underscores a need for them to get a real upgrade at CB as a priority. Wouldn't mind getting Ware for a rushbacker and seeing if they can get one of the top 2 or 3 CBs in the draft. If Dennard should fall or they can get Gilbert they'd actually be in decent shape.

If Byrd signs with NO I'd think it's because he's not getting nearly the $9 million he was hoping for. Especially since he went in for a visit rather than just getting signed staying at home. With Kenny Vaccaro they don't really need to be spending huge sums on another safety anyway.

much better may be overstating it but he doesnt make plays patrolling....i think he has 5 int's since hes been in the league...where as hes a very good slot coverage guy...i dont know much about his tackling but one of my boys was tellin me hes often amongst the league leaders in missed tackles

It's basically a good signing. Addresses a need without breaking the bank, and there is upside potential in his game still. The coaches must really like his versatility because the Eagles had him targeted and jumped on him immediately, it's not like this was Plan D after all the safeties they really wanted were scooped up.
Title: Re: Malcolm Jenkins, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: Eagaholic on March 12, 2014, 01:11:08 AM
Although he did look like at least plan B after they weren't be to land Mitchell before he signed with Pit.

Kinda nice they did want a hard hitting guy though. Maybe Pryor in the draft?

He's got a ring and I have to think that if the Saints weren't in cap hell they would have re-signed his ass.

Or not.

im gonna go with the or not part

gonna be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming few years....saints basically allow their scraps to go to philly while they sign arguably the top FA on the market at the same position...not saying the eagles are wrong or the saints are right but its interesting to see two contenders who just played in the playoffs go about FA is such a different manner
Title: Re: Malcolm Jenkins, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: QB Eagles on March 12, 2014, 07:02:10 AM
The Saints have also gotten rid of Lance Moore, Will Smith, Jabari Greer, Roman Harper, and Jonathan Vilma, and they are looking to get rid of Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas. They're in the midst of a deep veteran purge that has left them with no one on their defense from the team that won the Super Bowl 4 years ago. Both the Saints and Eagles may have been in the playoffs last year, but the Eagles are building up from scratch on D while the Saints are trying to inject some life back into an older squad that was tied up in a lot of big money contracts.
Title: Re: Malcolm Jenkins, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on March 12, 2014, 07:10:12 AM
id say the saints are starting from scratch on D just as much as the eagles if not more....teams are about in the same position which is why its interesting to see one go for a foundation and the other for a complementary piece....especially when the team who got the big time player has less money

the big difference is that the saints already have their 20 million dollar qb on the books whereas the eagles are planning for the future knowing they are going to have to cake off their qb big time in a year...also the saints dont have a ton of elite drew brees years left whereas the eagles have a young qb and can slow roll their play more
Title: Re: Malcolm Jenkins, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: QB Eagles on March 12, 2014, 07:26:09 AM
Yeah I agree with the Eagles having the ability to build slower. If they legitimately have a window at all, it's staying open longer than the Saints window is. And if Chip and Foles ever get to points in their careers where they are comparable to Payton and Brees (we can dream), the Eagles will have the luxury of taking bigger risks with the rest of their roster just like the Saints do now, because that combination alone is enough to keep them competitive.

i think he goes in the teens and he easily could go in the low 20's depending on what happenes with other players and pryor himself btwn now and may....it wasnt long ago that pryor wasnt even a first rounder to a lot of people...he happens to be a hot name right now but he is probably peaking too early and is bound to cool down...happens all the time

theres also clinton dix who will fall in the general area of the eagles pick if they like him

Good.  What's the deal with Thurmond?

It's generally thought that it will be tough to make the numbers work to keep Thurmond. If they are going to do Bradford and Cox this offseason they probably want to line those up first. [Especially the big man since it's not like he's waiting on this year's FA period like Bradford and Thurmond probably are.] Caking off Thurmond now might be a sign that one of those deals isn't going to happen.
Title: Re: Malcolm Jenkins, Philadelphia Eagle

Thurmond wants to play CB and that's where the money's at...I doubt he comes back.
Title: Re: Malcolm Jenkins, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on February 22, 2016, 02:01:21 PM
problem with thurmond in schwags defense is that he plays an aggressive attacking style meaning that their safeties would be required to press the line more and help with stopping the run...something thurmond is not built for...he was perfect for chips defense that required versatility from the safeties in that they can play man

plus the guy is never healthy and had a one good (not great) season this year....lets not act like he is some high priority guy

He's also going to be 29 and looking for the long-term big money final contract like what Jenkins just got. It's probably gonna be another hole on the defense so it sucks to let him walk, but the team has bigger problems to address and less risky deals to get done. Spend the farging money on a 25 year-old NFL caliber guard or something.

jenkins isn't the best player on the team but he's my favorite eagle in a while.

looking back at this thread, wtf happened with Byrd?  injury just farged him?  i remember when they signed jenkins he was pretty clearly the consolation prize to byrd.

Yeah. Knee blew up early in that first year with the Saints and when he came back he couldn't make interceptions anymore. Which turned out to be like 90% of his game.

Did the MAGA fans co-opt Game of Thrones stuff yet? Let me know if Facebook gets full of memes about wanting players who didn't bend the knee.
