Title: Fantasy Baseball
Post by: Sgt PSN on January 20, 2004, 12:19:02 AM
Well, now that the NFL season has officialy ended for us perhaps we should look forward to the prospect of a successful season of baseball in Philly and perhaps some Fantasy BB here.  A few questions:

Has CCF ever done a fantasy baseball league?

Would the Gods, oops, I mean Mods oppose to a CCF Fantasy BB league?

Would other CCF members be interested in playing?

I've never played fantasy baseball before, but what the hell, it'll give me something to do.  I know it's still a little early for baseball, but spring training opens up in a few short weeks so I figured I'd get the ball rolling on this.

Any takers?

As long as it's CF sanctioned, I'll play (win).

I will get in.  I did a league on Yahoo last year for the first time and it was pretty cool.  Actually had me watching baseball hi-lites. :puke

Yahoo is still free i believe and they have automated drafts.

Since there seems to be some interest here, how exactly does Fantasy BB work?  Do you set your lineups on a weekly basis, daily, every couple days?  Never played before so I just don't know, but I'm willing to give it a shot. :)

With baseball you need to change your lineup almost daily. If that's not possible, you should try to look at it at least on Sunday and Wednesday as a lot of teams get Monday and Thursday off.  The good thing about Yahoo, though, is you can set your roster for each day a week in advance.

Since this isn't  :CF authorized, I don't want to play.  I need more titles under my name!

The only problem with Fantasy BB is it is really LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG, and like Thawk or someone said you need to do almost daily checks/updates on your roster and at the beginning and end of the season it is fun, but during the long summer months it can get very boring and a lot of people in each league will just stop paying close attention.

Then you end up with maybe a couple people trying and everyone else just looking at it once a week tops.

Just a warning, it is loooooooooooooooooong and tedious.

I'll pass. :D

Ain't that the truth!  It is a long season and you have to make sure you switch your pitching and sub out your guys with off-days.  Sometimes you forget to check or they bump a guy to give him an extra day of rest and it throws off your whole rotation.  Anyway...it's not so bad, just takes some effort to manage your squad.

Are we doing this?  We should set it up soon if so.  Yahoo is free again and accepting leagues already.  I assume we will do an auto-draft??  But we also need to decide on the pitching and batting categories for the league.
Title: Re:Fantasy Baseball
Post by: ballhawkdawk on March 01, 2004, 03:08:26 PM
I have no idea about any of that. I'll just be here, bored enough to actually participate.

Oh, and I've never played this before, so we can go ahead and lock me up a slot at the bottom of the standings. ;)
Title: Re:Fantasy Baseball
Post by: joneszilla on March 01, 2004, 03:23:51 PM
Default Categories are as follows:
Batting - Runs, Home Runs, RBI's, SB, Batting Avg.

Pitching - Wins, Saves, K's, ERA, WHIP

But its customizable to add any amount.  some ones to consider:

Batting - Hits, Triples, Walks, Slugging Pct., Total Bases

Pitching - Walks, Total Bases allowed, K/BB, K/9 innings

i figure we could add one or two categories to batting and pitching if we needed to and still keep it simple.

Bullshtein!  Homohawk ain't playing because the league isn't  :CF sanctioned.  Loser.

I wouldn't mind running the league but as I've never played Fantasy BB before I wouldn't know the best way to set the league up.  Those who have played before with different formats have a better understanding of it than I.  If someone wants to take on the added burden of running a league I'll definately participate though.   :)

K, I'm new to this, and I don't follow baseball.....so I'll ask my first stupid question....what does bn, tb, and whip stand for?

This is kinda kewl though, I started setting my draft order this morning and I must say that there sure are alot of DAMN baseball players. :o

BTW, when is the auto-draft, and could you let me know exactly how it works (does it stick to you ranking, go by position, etc.?)

Thanks, (I know I'm probably gonna annoy the hell out of you guys at first, not that thats anything new 8))
Title: Re:Fantasy Baseball
Post by: Tomahawk on March 03, 2004, 11:53:43 AM
It sticks to the ranking.  Baseball is so much more difficult than baseball *edit:FOOTBALL* when ranking players because of the many different positions.

Pitchers score more points, but obviously don't play but every four days or so.

Outfielders generally have the best hitting scores, but of course there are some infielders/catchers that are right up there too.

What makes fantasy baseball fun is, unlike football, there's almost always somebody to pick up on the waiver wire, and trades are easier to make.

*Edit Reason:  Baseball is really the same thing as baseball

Hey BHD,

BN - stands for bench player.  Basically subs, can be any position.

TB - Total Bases

WHIP - (Walks + Hits)/Innings Pitched

This is a rotisserie league so there will be 12 categories(unless we decide on more or less.  Each team will be ranked according to where they stand in that category and assigned a point total.  1st place in a category gets 12 points, 2nd place 11....etc.  This is added for all categories to get a total and overall standings.  Right now we have 6 pitching and 6 hitting categories.

If I were to draft 2 superstar short stops, and I was stuck with a crappy 2nd baseman,  can you edit your rosters to move one of those players to 2nd, or are they stuck in their original position?

C C. Wilson
1B J. Giambi

3B A. Ramírez
SS J. Rollins
OF R. Sanders
OF P. Nevin
OF S. Finley
Util C. Everett
BN J. González
BN É. Martínez

SP P. Martínez
SP R. Johnson
RP E. Guardado
RP B. Looper

Due to a majority of the people not wanting to micro-manage their team(put in a roster every day).  The league is set up so you can only adjust your roster once a week and its on Mondays.  Whatever lineup you set for a particular Monday is your lineup for the week.

Looks like it is locked, you are right.  Maybe b/c the games have started?  anyway, if you go to Monday, 4/12 you will see you can make moves on that date.  as well as the 19th, 26th etc......

You can change your roster any day of the week, you just need to select any Monday as your roster date and you will see the drop down boxes for roster moves.  For example.....i set my roster for this week yesterday by choosing Mon. Apr 5th on the roster menu and adjusting my players.

can it be changed back to being able to edit daily? i think yahoo will just let a roster re-up itself as it goes.

i think it'll suck if someone gets hurt in a monday night game and then youre stuck with crap for a week.

i still dont want piazza...but if someones gonna offer a trade, i better get a catcher back.

Unfortunately, that is one of the few settings that are locked in place once the draft is over.  We are stuck with this.  i would prefer daily editing as well, but when we first decided to do this, most of the people said they would play if they only had to change their roster once a week.

Quotethink it'll suck if someone gets hurt in a monday night game and then youre stuck with crap for a week

Agreed, but we all are locked into the same rules....it will work out in the end.

Well, i shouldn't have opened my mouth...i dropped outta first last night.
I guess some people in the league said they didn't have the time to check their team and change people around so the person that started the league locked the teams up so that you can only change your people once a week.
I don't care if anyone else gets a chance to look or not...i have the ability to check on a daily basis.
I wish they would release the settings.  So, if someone goes on the shelf on Monday...you have to suffer with them not in the lineup all week long and you lose points.  That is how i dropped out of first.

Anyway...i think joneszilla is in first now.

I agree with you SappHater...i am in another league with daily changes and i like it much more.  Especially when a player goes on the DL in our league and you can't change it for week.   >:(     But there is some strategy behind the weekly settings.

Like Newcastle United, they wear black and white stripes! Well, that was the original reason. It's also great they play the Cubs in interleague play now. I hate them. They are even bigger losers than the Sox, yet they seem to be seen as, by the Chicago media and their own fans, as Chicago's real team. I laughed so hard over the Steve Bartman thing.  :-D BTW, I think slugging percentage is something to do with how many bases you get per at bat - or something.  ??? The only teams who visted England to my knowledge are the Red Sox and Yankees. I cannot support the Yankees as I refuse to be a bandwagon jumper and the only other friend of mine in England who likes baseball supports the Red Sox. Would be cool if ChiSox came to London tho'. I feel the need to beat up some umpires. :evil

Ono scored. Haven't heard any Beckham to Japan rumours to be honest. He says he's staying at Real Madrid, but there have been rumours of him going to Chelsea.

Okay, I got it. How do you think about Takatsu?

That's it after Koch walked the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with bases fargin loaded, I'm all for Takatsu at closer right now. :boom

Sounds good to me. I dont know if he can do well when all the bases are loaded though.

He became a closer when he was 25. He made 200+ saves.

Then, hell, bring him in. Ozzie Guillen seems reluctant though. :boom If Billy Koch was doing any good, he'd have a point, but he sucks. :win

:yay Nice article. I actually understand Ozzie's reasoning and I am far from unhappy with him as a manager, but I would like to find out sooner rather than later how Shingo does as a closer, because the situation cannot stay as it is now.

I like to think I know a lot about baseball (a fair amount more than football, anyway).  I tried to use the Sabremetric approach last year, and ended up fifth out of 10 teams.  The 2-4th place teams just pretty much randomly picked players.  :-D

It looks like we have enough interested parties, all someone needs to do is go ahead and make the league.
