you can almost bet that mays blows away the scouts on his 40 time/bench press, vertical, shuttle, etc. and he rises up from a projected 24th pick by kiper

but you'll know how good this guy really is if his boy pete carroll passes on him twice

yeah hes a friggin animal...theres definitely things to not like about his game but being soft is about the last thing you would rip him for...then again we are talking about cole here

its funny he would also mention him getting to much hype when for more than a year now hes been getting downgraded
Title: Re: NFL Draft 2010
Post by: The BIGSTUD on February 23, 2010, 10:22:54 PM
Maybe soft was a bad word. The thing with Mays is that one play he'll come up and blow a run play up and the next he'll get beat over the top. Sometimes when I watch him I think with his great athletic ability that he should be a pure stud all over the field, but he isn't. Maybe that's just the way he is. But sometimes I think he'd rather make sportscenter with the big hit rather than making the consistent play.

He's not a bad player, I just worry about his coverage skills in the NFL.

I've seen him play a lot. At least 15 games over the last two seasons. USC is on a lot and I love college football. There are a lot of frauds out there who act like they watch players play and don't, but if I don't see a player play then I'll admit it.

Despite Taylor Mays' impressive showing in the forty-yard dash, SI.com's Tony Pauline points out that the USC safety sported poor form during position drills.

Mays was "terribly slow moving in reverse" and appeared to be "uncomfortable" backpedaling during drills. Mays also had major trouble changing direction, often coming to a complete stop as opposed to making a smooth transition. Pauline believes Mays will have trouble in man coverage and making plays sideline-to-sideline. The same concerns dogged him at the Senior Bowl.

Post by: reese125 on March 03, 2010, 11:49:43 AM
I dont think they're acting much of anything, but just pointing out that he is truly exposed when trying to perform these drills

Title: Re: NFL Draft 2010
Post by: ice grillin you on March 03, 2010, 11:58:08 AM
you cant get exposed in drills...these guys need to actually watch games and see where the players strengths and weaknesses lie...because the games are what matter

what makes me mad is how todd friggin  mcshay and these other idiots will be like OH NO! taylor mays really hurt himself because his hips couldnt turn at the combine...when in fact nothing he did at the combine yeseterday drastically helps or hurts his draft status...everyone on the planet knew long ago what taylor mays is all about as an nfl player in terms of his plusses and minuses...

these talking heads are just trying to make the combine way more important than it is because if people see what it really means they might be out of a job
Title: Re: NFL Draft 2010
Post by: reese125 on March 03, 2010, 12:34:54 PM
I dont know I might have to disagree. Im not acting like the combine/drills is the end all be all to a kids talent on the field, but it damn sure is a good component.

but if the avg college kid out of weber state is banging out these drills no problem, but runs a 4.6.... and taylor mays, usc stud 1st rounder cant run a simple cone and shuttle drill, but runs a 4.3--theres a problem there and should be noted

and shtein, he could have just as hard a time covering in the LB position, with multiple receiver sets, staying with crossing patterns and such.

I guess what Im saying is he'll fit perfect here

Title: Re: NFL Draft 2010
Post by: ice grillin you on March 03, 2010, 12:37:25 PM
it might be noted but its not changing much if anything come apr 22...and certainly not on any first second round types

of course this doesnt include a freakshow like al davis who will move a guy up 20-30 spots because he ran a fast 40 at the combine

this is special:

Abilene Christian OT Tony Washington reportedly had sex with his 15-year-old biological sister when he was 16, and is a registered sex offender.
It's believed the sexual act, which occurred in May 2003, was consensual. "I made a mistake at the age of 16, and for that, I am deeply sorry," he said in a statement. "I will not try and excuse or justify anything." Washington, who might be a first-round prospect based on size, length, and athleticism alone, was a big recruit at LSU in 2005. He originally received five years' probation and no jail time. Washington is reportedly now on good terms with the sister.

Quote
To put those scores in perspective, the Post compared Wonderlic numbers of run-of-the-mill NFL quarterbacks such as Alex Smith (40) and Matt Leinart (35) to those of Pro Football Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Jim Kelly (both 15) and an established star such as Donovan McNabb (14) of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Holmgren on Clausen: "I wish I liked him more"
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 21, 2010 6:33 PM ET
Mike Holmgren has picked up two quarterbacks this offseason, and says he plans to draft another.

Just don't expect Holmgren to select one in the first two rounds.  Holmgren never has drafted a quarterback that early before, and he doesn't plan to this year.

"This year it would be pretty hard to use the second [round] pick to get a quarterback. It would be pretty hard for me," Holmgren said to Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.  "Next year might be easier. . . . But I'd have to have another second-round pick [to take a quarterback in the second round]."

Holmgren seems likely to have a chance to take Jimmy Clausen with the seventh overall pick.  But that's not going to happen either.

"I wish I liked [Clausen] more," Holmgren said. "You know how you have a type of player that you like? It's not scientific. People like him a lot. He'll go high. But it would be hard for me [to take him]."

Wow.  Unless that's a serious misdirection play, Holmgren's candor shows why he wanted to invest so much in veteran quarterbacks this offseason.

Ouch.

Oh no! There's a pot epidemic. (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/don_banks/03/23/nfl.draft.marijuana/index.html?xid=cnnbin&hpt=Sbin)

QuoteSome players suspected of marijuana use in college in recent years, Philadelphia receiver DeSean Jackson and Minnesota receiver-return man Percy Harvin most notably, have been two of the top offensive players in the draft the past two years. Their early success in the NFL has possibly led some teams to take a more lenient approach to drafting talented players who are suspected of collegiate marijuana use, one team front office executive said.

"If you passed on Jackson and you passed on Harvin the past two years, maybe you can't afford to just completely write off that kind of prospect every time, or you won't have a job at some point because you won't win any games,'' one team front office executive said.

QuoteTebow denies Wonderlic incident
Posted by Mike Florio on March 24, 2010 6:04 PM ET
So I had a telephone conversation today with quarterback Tim Tebow.

Ever heard of him?

He reached out, via agent Jimmy Sexton, in response to Tuesday night's story regarding the incident during the Wonderlic testing at the Scouting Combine.  As a league source told us, Tebow said something in the testing room about saying a prayer.  And then another player said something in response.  And then some of the other players laughed.

But Tebow says it didn't happen.

"Not one single word of it is true," Tebow told me.

Tebow has a very genuine and disarming way about him.  There's an innocence and kindness in his voice that conflicts with the image of a highly successful college quarterback, who was arguably one of the best college football players of all time.

He was nevertheless firm and resolute in his denial.

"One of the number one things for me is being someone of character and when I say something people can take it to the bank," Tebow said.  "That story is absolutely not true."

Tebow then named several of the other players who were in the room, and he invited me to check his version with each of them.

Tebow explained that he said nothing to the group of roughly 100 players, and he said that he spoke only to BYU quarterback Max Hall.

After talking to Tebow, I immediately contacted the source for the story, who agreed with my assessment that Tebow is "the real deal."  But the source didn't back down.

It's possible that Tebow made a comment intended for Hall that was overheard by another player, who then made a profane comment in response that was not heard by Tebow.  Still, Sexton told me in a follow-up e-mail that Tebow "never said anything remotely close" to what had been attributed to him.

We'll keep digging on this one.  We're confident that our source didn't make it up, but we were impressed by Tebow's willingness to reach out and explain his position.  Though I'm usually even more skeptical when someone tells me multiple times in a seven-minute conversation that he always tells the truth, when Tebow said it I believed it.

That said, there has to be a way to harmonize the two stories.  Tebow believes he's telling the truth, and I believe our source.  We'll keep after this one and report back when we have more.

I'm agreeing with that. He just doesn't seem like the type to beat you over the head with the bible for not believing.

Either way he's not going to be a good NFL QB so here's to hoping the taterskins pick him up.

seriously all you had to do was watch him for more than five minutes over the last four years

i love to how the idiot says "other than" a commerical on the most watched tv show of the entire year he doesnt seem intent on spreading his religious beliefs

Back to the pot thing for a sec...I sat next to Desean and Maclin at a Sixers/Rockets game back in November..It was actually the Friday night before the @Giants game. They walked in mid-1st quarter and smelled like the freshest ganj my nose has ever been privileged to inhale. My buddy and I spent some time talking to them and they were both in another world...Two days later pimp went off on the Giants.

The commercial was the polar opposite of vague.  To someone who's completely ignorant of Tebow's proseltyzing it might be, but to anyone who has even a passing familiarity with him, the intended message was glaringly obvious.

Bradford was absolutely ridiculous at his Pro-Day

The godfather Gil Brandt on NFL radio:

Sam Bradford's workout Monday in front of representatives for all 32 NFL teams at Oklahoma's pro day almost left me speechless. And that's saying something.

Bradford threw more than 100 passes during the workout and, in my estimation, didn't have one that was uncatchable. He moved around well, including throwing on the run out of the pocket, and went through the entire route tree. The scripted workout included three-, five- and seven-step drops, shotgun, and play-action plays, plus sprints and rollouts to both sides.

It really was a treat to watch, and I think everyone here was in awe of Bradford's performance. In fact, he put on the best quarterback workout by a draft prospect that I've seen since I watched a private workout Troy Aikman put on for us with the Cowboys in California.

If Bradford is feeling the effects of his shoulder injury or is experiencing any weakness, there were no indications of that. He threw with velocity during the entire workout.

He officially measured in at 6-foot-5 and 236 pounds.

espn.com is doing a pretty cool "all-time draft team" sort of thing based on the round they were drafted in along with ufa's.  23 total players per round, 11 offense and 12 defense (the 12th is for the 3-4 defense).    so basically, they're building a team of 1st round picks, 2nd round picks, etc, etc.  today, they unvieled their 7th rd team (which includes udfa's along with any player drafted beyond the 7th round from back in the day) and also the 6th rd team.

wed - rounds 4 and 5
thur - rounds 2 and 3
fri - round 1

good read if you have time to kill.

The DEs for that 7th plus is pretty crazy LC Greenwood and Deacon Jones.  The runners-up Richard Dent and Clyde Simmons aren't too shabby either.

I didn't like the Bart Scott pick over Seth Joyner for one of the LB spots.

Ndukamon Suh was on NFL live and he announced he was donating 2+MM back into his College, and other programs.  Nice to see a guy come out and is ahead of the game mentally.  He's going to be a stud, but he's got the personalty that can sell a #1overall pick.

Im pumped for the draft, i was gonna go to a draft party, but he only had one tv setup, i cant miss the Flyers game to the draft, just not possible.  So i'll be sitting in my man cave dvr'ing both flipping between them.  I hate the new draft format

I actually thought the very first line was funny.

In the first game of the season last season, Sam Bradford step back in the pocket and boom, his shoulder got explosioned. It was not a pretty sight, and I cringe in my sleep every day, even till this day.

The Niners got LaGarrette Blount. Great talent, no risk. They did a good job this weekend.

Blount just decided to say f-off to the Niners and sign with the Titans.

Between that and Clark being a Skin instead of a Steeler I get an F for UDFAs. I'll just stop trying.
