300-pound man crushes fan at Shea

BY ZACHARY DOWDY
April 11, 2007, 10:20 PM EDT

Ellen Massey always counted being struck by a baseball or a bat at Shea Stadium among the hazards of being a Mets fan, but she never thought a 300-pound man would come crashing down the stands -- and onto her.

That's what the Manhattan resident, 58, said happened on Monday, Opening Day at Shea.

Shortly after the seventh-inning stretch, she said, a man dressed in a green Army-type jacket tumbled from higher seats and onto her back, knocking the wind out of her and, ultimately, causing serious injury.

"I only know he came flying," Massey, 58, said Wednesday from her bed in Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. "I was literally not able to breathe for about half-a-minute or so. The first thing I was aware of was not being able to breathe, and then when I was able to breathe I was aware of the pain in my lower back."

Massey, who is a lawyer, is scheduled for surgery on a vertebra on Friday. After she was injured, she said, she was attended to by two emergency medical technicians who were in the stands watching the game, and then by Shea's own medics, who stabilized her head and neck area and took her to a local hospital.

She was transferred to Jacobi on Wednesday.

A Mets spokesman declined to comment Wednesday night.

Massey's nephew, Peter Rubens, 35, of Brooklyn, said the first sign that something was amiss was a splash of beer flying onto her at about 4 p.m., then a bump from the man, who is unidentified.

"We were sitting and watching the ball game," he said. "And in a split-second a rather large person, a man, came sort of tumbling down upon us and basically landed on my aunt's head and neck."

Rubens said he couldn't make out distinguishing features of the man, who got up quickly and left. The nephew said he was most concerned at the moment about his aunt, who had begun gesturing that she couldn't breathe.

Going to Opening Day at Shea has become a family tradition for him and his relatives, a ritual dating back two decades, Rubens said.

Massey, who said she goes to six or seven games a season, said she started going to the opener with family two years ago.

"I have to say that in going to a baseball park, the only fear that has ever entered my mind is that I'd get hit by a hard ball," she said.

"I didn't expect a 300-pound human missile to hit me in the back. That doesn't come up on my list of fears."

And yeah, Gomez was the shtein yesterday... hopefully, a sign of things to come.

Speaking of stolen bases... it was great raping Capuano for 5 of them, 3 from David Wright. :yay

QuoteNo runner had so much as attempted a steal with the Brewers lefty pitching in 39 innings before Sunday. Only seven bases had been stolen against him in his previous 482 innings.

2 out of 3 from "the best team in baseball"... bring on the Cubbies.

No music to Mets'ears
IF YOU THINK DON IMUS has some decision problems, check out Lastings Milledge.

Milledge, rehabbing in Triple A ball for the New York Mets, has a rap song that frequently uses the N-word, and calls women the B-word and "ho's" in a song titled "Bend Ya Knees".

"He's lost his mind," City Councilman Leroy Comrie (D-Queens) told the New York Daily News yesterday. "I don't understand how he could, in the spirit of Jackie Robinson, put out music that's so vile, using some of the worst words in music."

Milledge is the CEO of Soul-ja Boi records and performs with rapper Manny D.

A rightfielder drafted by the Mets with the 12th overall pick in the 2003 amateur draft, Milledge hasn't exactly had the kind of past that has anyone rooting for him. He was expelled in 2003 from Northside Christian School in St. Petersburg, Fla., for having sex with a 15-year-old. Last year, he didn't exactly endear himself to teammates by his actions, which included high-fiving with fans after hitting a home run.

But this latest act could be the final straw.

"We disapprove of the content, language and message of this recording, which does not represent the views of the New York Mets," the team said in a statement.

Milledge wouldn't talk about his recording career to the New York Daily News when asked, saying he wanted to instead concentrate on his baseball career.

Good idea.

But Manny D couldn't resist. He had this to say: "Do I feel like he should watch what he says because he's in the public eye? Yeah, but everything he's doing is positive. He's not out there shooting people or shooting up dope. How can you fault somebody for something they say?"

Very well, then. Manny D, you are a dope.

But don't fault us for something we say. *

QuoteLo Duca outburst has Latin accent

Calls out media, Hispanic mates

BY PETER BOTTE
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Friday, June 29th 2007, 4:00 AM

Admitting he was "in a bad mood all day," Paul Lo Duca announced in a near-empty clubhouse last night - and on the eve of the Mets' key NL East showdown with the Phillies - that some of his Spanish-speaking teammates need to be held more accountable by the media.

"I'll do this (interview), but you need to start talking to other players," Lo Duca announced loudly after he was approached by a radio reporter after the Mets-Cardinals series finale was washed out by rain. "It's the same three or four people every day. Nobody else wants to talk. Some of these guys have to start talking. They speak English, believe me."

A crazy-eyed Lo Duca, of course, also had a few choice things to say last Saturday night to umpire Marvin Hudson to earn a two-game suspension that still is pending an appeal. But the fact that Lo Duca's words last night were directed more at his Spanish-speaking teammates' interaction with the media was a telling admission in one of the most diverse clubhouses in baseball.

In recent games, SNY analyst Keith Hernandez also has singled out stars Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado for needing to take more responsibility and accountability about the team's June swoon.

Approached shortly after Lo Duca's pronouncement, but not directly asked about it, Delgado politely declined to be interviewed, saying with a smile, "I have no comments, I'm going home."

Moments after Lo Duca's blowup, however, Beltran had asked the media if anyone needed to speak with him.

The Mets' 25-man roster contains 13 players who hail from predominantly Spanish-speaking countries (not including injured Pedro Martinez, Endy Chavez, Duaner Sanchez or Moises Alou), although media accessibility with any of them is normally no more an issue than with any other player.

Before the rainout, Lo Duca's ire similarly had been raised when he was asked for an update on his appeal of the ban and for his availability for this weekend's four-game series in Philadelphia, which starts with a day-night doubleheader today.

"Listen up, everybody," LoDuca had shouted. "Stop asking me when I'm going to drop my suspension (appeal). When are you guys going to drop it? I'm tired of talking about it. Go ask Tony (Bernazard) or Willie (Randolph). God almighty, it's like the president got killed."

Billy Wagner couldn't resist the obvious follow-up query, deadpanning to Lo Duca, "So, when are you going to drop it?"

Randolph confirmed he still anticipates having Lo Duca available for all four games in Philadelphia, adding "he'll probably deal with his appeal next week, after the Philly series."

Lo Duca's marital problems, gambling habits and personal life were publicly scrutinized throughout last season. He snapped at a reporter two months ago when he was asked about a photograph of himself and a woman in the winner's circle at Aqueduct. Asked for the woman's name, Lo Duca erupted, "That's my life. That's my personal life. That's none of your business. How would you like it if I went to your house and took pictures of your wife?"

Lo Duca had to be held back by Mets public relations director Jay Horwitz, while teammate Julio Franco hurried from the other side of the clubhouse to get between Lo Duca and the reporter.

In the ribs, Cole. In the ribs.

Braves almost blew a 4 run lead in the 9th. Mets scored a run with two men on then Wright hit a 2 run HR to left. Delgado came up next and hit the ball deep to left only to have Willie Harris go over the fence and rob him of a sure HR. Braves held on after that

Based on the way the Cardinals finished the regular season last year, I'd say the Mets are lining up nicely to win the World Series.

Of course, next year, Paul Lo Duca's going to get decapitated in a car wreck, David Wright's going to require major surgery, and Jose Reyes is going to be paralyzed in a tragic waterskiing accident.

Yep.  Pedro, Delgado, Beltran, Glavine and Wags.  The only downside to that is that much like the Phils, the Mets need pitching something awful and their big name pitchers are tired, old and hurt.

Milledge got suspended 3 games for his tantrum last night.

Anyone else catch what happened to Heilman last night?  Someone from the stands threw a baseball at him while he was warming on the mound and hit him in the arm.  Wright pointed out the guy that threw it.  It was a Mets fan.  :-D

Beltran left the Marlins game in the 5th inning with an apparent left knee injury.

UPDATE:  Beltran has a bruised petellar tendon.  He's considered day-to-day, and could even start today.  Not too serious.

not to the level of this mets team

they werent making 20 errors a game....and having players lose their minds getting kicked out every night...plus they had a HOF manager that kept them calm cool and collected

both teams were/are bad but the mets are the titantic while the cardinals were a cuban refugee raft hitting miami beach

youre just looking at wins and losses...not how the teams lost...the mets are giving away six run leads every game its seems....they are emotionaly losing it...willie is over his head and the team is complete wreck...far more than the other teams you referenced

Its incredible...each night seems to get worse. Blowing a 5 run, then a 4 run lead, then coming back in the 9th and blowing a 3 run lead, scoring 6 in the 9th and coming up a run short, etc...its almost unreal watching night after night. Like, what the hell is going to happen next?

All trash talking aside, its farging crippling watching this team collapse now...I almost threw my remote through my TV last night, and if Best Buy had a warranty for that, I probably would have.

I still think the Mets win the division, but this team has no shot at making any noise in the postseason.

Buster Olney said it this morning, and I think I agree - The Mets are done.

IT'S NOT OFFICIAL, BUT NL EAST RACE IS OVER

August 26, 2007 -- MEMO to Jimmy Rollins: The best team won.

Yes, it's still the dog days of August and the Mets have to travel to beautiful Philadelphia tomorrow, but the NL East race is over. Though the Yankees are fighting for their playoff souls, the Mets are merrily on their way to another October.

This really wasn't much of a race. Despite all the Mets problems, despite the fact they left the door wide open in the division, the Phillies and Braves have not been able to step through the portal.

So at 6:47 last night when Aaron Heilman got Luis Gonzalez to bounce into a 1-6-3 double play to give the Mets a 4-3 win over the Dodgers at sweaty Shea Stadium, the NL East race came to a close. Sure, there are magic numbers ahead and the official champagne clinching, but the Mets have no worries until October.

Even Carlos Delgado got into the act, banging a two-out, two-run-single in the fifth after Grady Little intentionally walked Jeff Conine to get to Delgado.

Though he's been frustrated by his season-long slump, Delgado said there was never any reason for him to start throwing bats or helmets, "and the fact you have a six-game lead helps," he said.

It sure does. The Mets know where they sit.

As soon as Delgado made his statement, the first baseman was reminded the Mets lead was 6 ½ games (the Braves and Phillies played last night).

"But who's counting," he said with a smile, later adding there is still a long way to go.

No there isn't. The Mets biggest challenge is to stay interested in the final five weeks of the season and to have the eye of the tiger when they get to the postseason.

Orlando Hernandez continued his magic and was brilliant for six innings before allowing back-to-back home runs in the seventh. The Mets are 9-0 in El Duque's last nine starts.

On this day the Mets didn't even have to use closer Billy Wagner, who has been used too much of late and told the team he needed a rest and to let Heilman finish the job.

Jose Reyes stole his 70th base after a leadoff single in the third, and David Wright knocked him in to put the Mets on top, 1-0. Reyes became only the second major leaguer since 2000 to notch 70 steals. Scott Podsednik stole 70 in 2004. At this rate, Reyes is likely to have the most steals since 1988 when Man of Steal Rickey Henderson swiped 93 bases for the Yankees.

Conine knocked in the Mets final run on a double to left that scored Wright in the seventh. Wright owns a ridiculous .790 on-base percentage over his last 19 plate appearances. The Mets simply have more weapons than anyone else in the East.

What the Mets were missing was a resolve to win at home. Tom Glavine, who was with the Braves when they used to be automatic division winners, noted that has changed. The Mets know they are good, even though they haven't always played like the best team.

The players will not admit that the race is over, but the Mets are confident in their abilities and have been from Day 1.

"We have the talent to win," Glavine said. "When you come off a year like we had last year and you have as much or more talent in the room the following year, you just look around and see a team that you think is a good team and a team that can win, regardless of what everybody else is doing or what other people think."

The Mets didn't think this would be a runaway like last year.

"We knew that our division was going to be tougher this year because the other two teams that we beat last year struggled, and you knew they were not going to do that again," Glavine said.

Wagner agreed.

"We just have to continue to play."

"We're in a great position," Glavine said. "All we have to do is take care of business and win our games and it doesn't matter what anybody else does."

Considering the talent disparity in the division, it never really mattered.

The only person that went on about the empty seats, that I have heard...was your son Angelo Cataldi.

QuoteSeptember 28, 2007
MEMO TO ME:

Memo to me: Was I ever wrong about the NL East and the Mets and the Phighting Phils.

In August I wrapped up the NL East in a nice little package for the Mets and said the race was unofficially over. I wrote these words:

Memo to Jimmy Rollins: The Best Team Won.

Here we are three days to go in the regular season and the race is just beginning.

The Phillies have overcome numerous injuries and no matter what happens these final three days, they have shown the hearts of champions and for that they should be congratulated.

The Mets have collapsed – perhaps the greaTest collapse in baseball history considering the teams that they've lost to down the stretch, and if you are going to be wrong, I can live with the fact that it took a colossal collapse to be wrong – while the Phillies have shown incredible heart and fortitude, led by Jimmy Rollins.

It was Rollins who said the Phils were the team to beat in the NL East over the winter. He was right. I was wrong. I've always loved Rollins approach to the game – he is Philadelphia's Derek Jeter – and he is putting up MVP numbers.

To me, Rollins is the NL MVP. His defense is remarkable and his hitting is Captain Clutch. And his words fired up his teammates. He led by example in so many ways.

The Phillies have once again shown why baseball is the greatest game. It's not over til it's over. Once again that lesson was driven home – to me and everyone else in New York and especially to those in the Mets clubhouse.

Over the winter, it turns out, the Phillies were the team to beat in the NL East.

And with three days left in the season, they are still the team to beat in the NL East. Rollins was right. I was wrong. The Phillies are what being a winning team is all about.

At this point, I'm not concerned about what the Mets do.  Not because I don't think the Mets are capable of winning out but since the Phillies have the lead in the division they just need to win their last 2 games and it becomes irrelevant what the Mets do.

That brawl could be just what the Mets needed to pull it back together.  That and a no-hitter by Maine.  I'm guessing that the Mets will win tomorrow as well.  Glavine it just too wiley, and Willis has absolutely sucked this season.

The Phils need to win out and make it a moot point.

They looked so much better today.  Like loose and the fans were into it.  That and they didnt have to use the bullpen when the game was remotely close.

But..
Willis is 5-0 at Shea.

Today looked more like the Mets from July and early August than the Mets we've seen the past two weeks.

With the monkey off their backs, and with Glavine going, they have all the reason in the world to be confident.

And Willis may be 5-0 at Shea, but he's 3-11 since June 1.  His ERA since the All-Star break is 5.81.

Wags calls out Randolph and Peterson (http://www.nypost.com/seven/09302007/sports/mets/wagner__willie__rick_not_a_lot.htm)

Quotehe Mets' bullpen has been a mess for most of the season, and Billy Wagner evidently is tired of the pitchers involved shouldering the blame. In a New York magazine article that hits newsstands tomorrow, Wagner points a finger at Willie Randolph and pitching coach Rick Peterson as part of the problem.

"We've been throwing four innings a night - for months!" Wagner told the magazine. "Our pitching coach has no experience talking to a bullpen. He can help you mechanically, but he can't tell you emotions. He has no idea what it feels like. And neither does Willie. They're not a lot of help, put it that way."

Wagner, who is signed through 2009, tells the magazine he accepts responsibility for his failures and doesn't put too much stock into fan reaction.

"If I walk in after a save and this fan's up there yelling, 'We love you!' - yeah, you love me today," Wagner said. "I blow a save, 'We hate you!' Well, you hate me today."

What a sensitive bitch.

I'm actually stunned that the Mets haven't shtein-canned Randolph yet.  I thought for sure that Omar Minaya would have scheduled a news conference by now.  Not that he deserves it, though.  His players absolutely quit on him and they should be held accountable for that not him.

QuoteMets interested in Freddy Garcia
BY ANTHONY McCARRON
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Saturday, November 24th 2007, 4:00 AM

Kennedy/AP

The Mets missed out on Freddy Garcia last winter, but now that the big righty is a free agent, his agent says Omar Minaya is back on his trail.
The Mets tried to trade for Freddy Garcia last December, but the Phillies made a better offer and got the hulking righty from the White Sox.

The Mets, though, remained interested, and now that Garcia is a free agent, they've called his representative several times to discuss signing him. Garcia, 32, is rehabbing from shoulder surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff and should be ready to pitch by midseason, perhaps as early as June.

"The Mets have shown considerable interest in him, and some other teams, too," said Peter Greenberg, Garcia's agent. "Omar (Minaya, the Mets' GM) has called several times. Omar likes him. The Mets were one of the top contenders when the Phillies got him."

Greenberg said he would field offers for Garcia at the winter meetings, which begin Dec. 3 in Nashville, but he added that they might decide to wait to sign until after Garcia's rehab is finished. Then Greenberg would arrange showcases for Garcia to pitch in front of teams who then would bid on his services midway through next season.

"If something is right at the winter meetings, maybe he'll sign or maybe he'll wait and maybe make more money," Greenberg said. "He'd be a guy for the second half. Contenders are looking for pitching around that time and you wouldn't have to trade for it then. If we did a showcase and we reached a deal (next summer), we'd let a team do a physical and do a Roger Clemens, a prorated deal for that season plus any extra years."

Garcia, 6-4 and 260 pounds, has a 117-76 record and a 4.07 ERA over his nine-year career. He's won 16 or more games four times and is 6-2 with a 3.11 ERA in nine postseason starts. He won the clinching Game 4 of the 2005 World Series for the White Sox by blanking the Astros on four hits over seven innings.

The Phillies gave up prospects Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez for Garcia last December. The Mets wouldn't satisfy the White Sox's demands for young pitching. Garcia went 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA in 11 starts for the Phillies before starting a rehab program that didn't work. He had surgery in August, which was performed by noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews. Garcia made $10 million last season.

"His fastball was just in the mid-80s, so he shut it down," Greenberg said. "We were told the operation was a success, but that's only half the equation - the doctors always say it's how much work the player puts in. Freddy is a hard worker and he's working out at a facility in Miami. ... He'll certainly be ready for the second half."

QuoteThe New York Daily News reiterated the Mets' interest in free agent starter Jon Lieber this morning. Liebs turns 38 in April. He's probably just as good as Livan Hernandez, but less durable. The Mets' interest in Lieber was previously reported by Jayson Stark on December 5th.
