I'm stoked for today. Although nothing can beat yesterday's picks, I'm anxious to see what happens.
One of the reasons I usually dig the second day is that, compared to the first day, there's usually more action and it moves along at a faster pace. Except yesterday was full of action and moved along nicely. Let's hope today is more of the same.
Yesterday I took a nap cause I had a long night before, and I woke up and saw a Winston Justice thread on here and I was estatic.

Yup, I was shocked as to how fast the first round went yesterday. I was a lot happier when I started watching NFL Network over those assclowns on ESPN. Cripes they talk too much.
If you're going to suffer people talking too much, why not just hang out here? We made fifty pages of garbage talk like it was nothing!

So am I, there are some really good players out there and the Eagles could pick up a couple of guys that could see some PT early. There are also guys that are projects out there like Reggie McNeal, Robinson, and Brad Smith.
Besides WR, I'm looking for some DB and KR help today. And a project QB, naturally.
Houston took Owen Daniels, TE out of Wisconsin to get us started on the day.
Eagles traded up to pick 99.
Eagles picked OG Max Jean Gilles.
Jesus. Let's see who they are after..
Jean-Gilles. Awesome!
Max Jean-Gilles :yay
Max Jean Giles OG from Georgia
Great pick!

Announced as a RB.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Eagles moved up again in this round.
I went to the bath room I didn't see the pick what did they trade to get up there? What a great pick, I really hope this means Andy is going to use more of a run game. They have some serious young talent along the offensive line. Hell, last year was basically Andrews rookie season he could still slide out to RT when Runyan goes who knows, but at least Reid is committed to keeping Donavan from getting killed.

Swapped 4th rounders and threw Hollis Thomas in for good measure.
This could very well go down as the best draft in team history...
Buffalo takes Ko Simpson
Finally. Ko was one of my favorite players, I would have definitely considered him at 108.
I am thinking that too.
And is there any doubt that Andy is looking to run the ball?
I still think we'll see a big RB later on too.
Raiders took Darnell Bing
Jets took Brad Smith
Quote from: PhillyPhreak54 on April 30, 2006, 11:31:02 AMI still think we'll see a big RB later on too.
That would be fine with me. Also, is there any doubt that Andy isn't terribly impressed with what's available at WR, and that he's not looking for anyone to help immediately at that position??
Get Brandon Marshall/Demetrius Williams next!
Great pick though.
NE picks Garrett Mills FB TUlsa
ARZ takes Gabe Watson
Eagles have TRADED UP again.
The bottom line on ESPN shows the Eagles at 115 and Minnesota at 127
I just noticed that...WTF?
Id lke to take Avant with that.

Jesus farg, this draft is moving faster than a Saudi on 9/11.
We are up AGAIN! :-D
Jason Avant. I would have preferred Marshall or Williams...
YES!
AVANT
Jason Avant WR Michigan. Another great pick.

Nice possesion receiver if it wasn't for his zesty forty time he would have been a second or third rounder.

Artis Hicks, no joke.
What did we trade?
Baltimore takes Demetrius Williams. About time.
Did we really trade Hicks?
Goddamn, the Eagles are getting right down to business today.
No shtein?
Artis was traded?
What did we trade to Minnesota to get 127 and 185? Because we have 185 now too.
Now they just need a developmental QB and a big back and this draft will be absolutely insane. It really can't get any better than it is right now.
Get Larry Vickers from Colorado, thats your big back.
We dont have any 4th rounders left. We have 5th round (147), 5th round (168), 6th round (204).
So our next pick is #147, right?

So our next pick is #147, right?
I guess my question was answered.
The NFL.com trade tracker (http://www.nfl.com/draft/drafttracker/trades) is up to date with all the Eagles moves.
So, they traded a DT who would have been cut anyway to move up for a guy who can team with Andrews to blow shtein up in the middle of the line... then they traded the extra OL who should have been cut anyway to move up and get the most NFL-ready receiver in the whole draft, IMO.
Avant's timed speed scares me a little, but the guy is a natural at WR. Does he also return punts/kicks?
Jaworski just made a comment regarding timed speeds. He was talking about Vernon Davis and how yes, its great that he ran a great 40 time and such, but games are different than wearing t-shirts and shorts and running in that situation. I am not overly concerned with the kid's 40 times, the same way no one should be overly impressed with someone with a fantastic 40 time. It doesn't always equate to speed on the field or vice versa.
Hate to say this, but just look at TO. Not exactly the speed demon.

Reid and Heckert are on fire.
Avant's speed scared me too. His pro day was poor - thats why I didn't have him on the WR list
Brandon Marshall goes to DEN. :(

147
168
204

Same could be said about Emmit Smith or Jerry Rice. I firgured I'd throw their names out there because they don't make me want to throw up.
82 catches 1000+ is hard to argue with though.
Marshall scared me a bit because he just converted to WR.
They weren't going to get another WR IMO anyway. The thing I like about Avant is that he doesn't get pushed off the jam, and he runs fantastic routes. He's extremely reliable, which is really what the Eagles need. Do they need a gamebreaker too? Maybe, sure... but they still have Westbrook and Reggie... and both Pinkston and Lewis have speed. The thing the Avant pick tells me is simply that they wanted a WR that had the best chance to make some catches and help the team this year. Avant, IMO, has the absolute highest floor in the draft of any WR. Any.
I just think his ceiling is not much above that.
In the meantime, the draft goes on. The Jets got Leon Washington (RB 5-8/202;Florida State). And NE just took what they hope will be Viniateri's replacement: Stephen Gostkowski (6-2/210;Memphis).
Denver can kiss my ass. They got both of the receivers I wanted (Marshall & Walker).
Die, Shanahan. Just farging die.
:-D
Eh, what can you do.
farg Denver, they aren't doing shtein this year, and we can sit back and laugh at them when Walker limps onto the field and is never the same again.
Avant's also a smart guy (Academic All American, I think I read) so learning Reid's system shouldn't be a problem.
A solid pick any way you look at it.
Brandon Marshall's a big boy.

No, at this point I think they need to take a QB to groom, though. I wouldn't complain about Plackemeier, though... especially since Dirk took a few visits and didn't get an offer sheet.
Tampa just took Zemaitas - The PSU homer in me wanted the Eagles to select him
Why the hell do they keep showing crap about Marcus Vick? It is the same shtein they showed yesterday, and Suzy Kolber just needs to beaten with a stick. She is fargin awful. :boom

Now give me a QB at 168 and a RB at 204 and I'n cool
Ah, cool. I followed college football even less this past year than normal so I'm unfamiliar with 90% of this years draft players. If they didn't play Texas at a time when I wasn't working I barely saw any college teams. I did read up on Bloom here and there but it was more about his fighting with the NCAA than what he was actually doing field wise.
I'm impressed with the draft this year. If Gocong pans out it'll be the best one for as long as I can remember.

That is why I say they can bring in a Rookie FA. Hell, half the starting FBs in this league are undrafted or very late picks.
Henderson is crying because Mel Kiper said he was a bad player 12 years ago....WHAAAAAHHH
IMO Vickers or Bernstein fill real needs now
Any idea who any of the new guys signed as agents?
How many picks do the Eagles have left?

As of now, Garrett Mills is the only FB (although technically probably more of a H-Back/TE hybrid) taken.
168 & 204
Thanks, Die-Hard!

Jacobs is gone
next pick will be larry vickers, if pittsburgh doesn't grab him first.
Fargin Steelers!
Spads and Merrill were jsut talking about Vickers and Merrill mentioned that the reason Vickers is dropping because he ran a 4.9 40 and had a disappointing pro day just when people were looking favorably towards him.

i don't care if it takes him 10 seconds to get one yard as long as he can bash his way through.

Well, not really. We're almost to the 6th and they are still there. They can get a FB in the UDFA period.
They need a RB (Humes, Riggs, Bell) and a QB with the final two picks.
Riggs would be nice
I like Riggs.

UDFA also rhymes with Thomas Tapeh
Who is our FB
Exactly what I'm saying.
If Tapeh's in playing condition by the opener why waste a draft pick on a FB. That's what UDFAs are for, especially when it comes to FBs in the modern NFL.
I suppose Gradkowski may still be there at 204. Another name we haven't mentioned is Brett Basanez. I'd be OK with either of those guys or McNeil. But I really want them to draft a QB with this pick.

Yeah, that seems like a bigger need than RB at this point.
Like I said in the Gaither thread, a developmental QB would have been a better option there. Omar Jacobs was taken a couple of picks earlier that Gaither. Too bad they didn't go up and get him.

Go up with what? I think the only picks they have left are comp picks.
Another guy that could be around is Paul Pinegar from Fresno.
The Skins drafted another S. Wonder if they think Taylor's going to be pumping iron behind bars this season.
Nah, safety is a position that they like to collect like some people collect baseball cards.

A pick from next year, possibly? How about another player who they're looking to get rid of?? I don't know, PG.
You all can have our soon to be former fullback, Polite. Yes, I'm kidding.
Just popping by to say congratulations on a nice draft so far. You've made some real nice moves. You'll have to tell Avant and Bloom to watch out for the the latest 'Skins safety, Doughboy. Doofy. Dopey. Whatever. :)
I know some of you were pretty disappointed with free agency, and hope this makes up for it.

Considering where it is and what they've done so far and the few lots the team had to begin with.... I kind of don't really care. They could draft a towel boy at this point and I wouldn't be bothered. The draft's been great this year.
I'd like to think they'd go QB or RB
I think the Eagles take one of these players:
QB - Basanez
DT - Wright
DE - Rice
CB - Webb, Phillips
TE - Mix, Massaquoi
FB - Bernstein, Harris
RB - Bell, Ganther, Hall, Riggs
S - Bethea
P - Plackemeier
or one of those basketball guys they worked out
That said, you can pretty much take to the bank that none of the guys I listed will be the pick.
EDIT: Both McNeal and Marcus Hudson were on my list until they were taken with the next couple picks.
Bucs took Gradkowski.
Good WCO guy for them.
Very impressive draft! :yay
Drew Olsen's a possibility too.
I'd be okay with Olsen...but I think they have enough backup QBs at this point.

What would they trade for? Anyway, that's all for this year. DOn't know anything about the last guy, but a great draft IMO.
Reid on ESPN right now.
Yeah, I'm very happy with the draft. I didn't like the Bunkley pick but that was in large part because I really wanted Justice and didn't think there was a chance in hell he'd be available for us later on, being able to get Justice anyway made me a lot happier with taking Bunkley in the first. Bloom was a guy I wanted coming in so I was very happy to get him, I still wish we'd taken a big RB and would've much rather had Riggs in the 6th than Ramsey but overall I'm very happy with what we did.
This might be one of the most successful drafts I think the Eagles may have had. If you told me both Justice and Bunkley without much trading I would have laughed at you. I also really like their 3rd pick and even the Avant/Bloom pick. Both guys seem to have a very good "let's get to work" attitude.
The thing I love is that with the exception of Gocong these guys are all from proven NFL factories...USC, FSU, Tennessee, Michigan, Colorado, Georgia. I feel like the Eagles FO a lot of the time tries to get too "cute" on draft day taking guys out of Southwest Idaho A&M and I'm glad they didn't do that as much this year (sure, Herremans has worked out so far, but generally I think you're better off going with the major school guys).

As did that guy from Villanova... what was his name again?
And that Saginaw Valley State guy too...
Wright finally got taken by Miami and Shockley got taken too, by Atlanta.
Yeah, Atlanta really needs another Mike Vick that sucks even worse. :-D
If DJ Shockley played more then one year at Georgia he'd be a day one pick. Do you just make stuff up as you go along? If Shockley was taken by us you'd love the guy.
No he wouldn't, he stinks. Did you even watch a Georgia game this year? Doesn't sound like it.
I can't stand Shockley, and I wouldn't have liked it if we drafted him.
How long did it take for them to sign Rookie FAs last season. This year there are going to be some very good players that will be available.
Next day.

No, I am pretty sure that it was the same day, I just couldn't remember how fast it was. It is certain to be fast and furious this year. I know they will find a player or two they always do.
Might've been the same day. YOu could be right.
They start calling UDFAs as soon as the draft ends. First come first serve, there's no waiting on UDFAs.
They probably started calling guys the second after they picked Ramsey. The might be weak in certain areas but picking quality street free agents isn't one of them.

BigEd, maybe you or Phreak or ge could answer a question for me: why is Chris Barclay not considered by anyone to be worthy of a late draft pick?
I know he's small for a RB, but he's fast, was the ACC's offensive player of the year (against competition like V. Davis), and has been the best RB in the ACC for the past two seasons, and he can return kicks. Any idea why he gets no pub?
Never really heard of him, but his bio (http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/rb/chrisbarclay.html) isn't that favorable....

What are you thoughts on Dallas' draft?
Most of the Pokes fans I see on the MB are not too happy.
There are a lot of Cowboys fans who wanted to take an offensive tackle or free safety on day one, and they didn't get their wish.
Carpenter should be a good fit. Ware will be the primary pass rusher. A lot of fans wanted Lawson for his athletic ability, but he would be another conversion and would probably mean moving Ware to the weak side. Carpenter can slide right in, and he can also play with his hand on the ground.
I don't have any problems with Fasano. At first I was shaking my head wondering why, but after day one was over, Jones made it clear that we're going to be using two TE sets as our base offense. Hannam(Our free agent signee) is more of a straight blocker who could also be used as an H back. Fasano won't stretch the field, but he can block and make the tough catch in traffic.
Hatcher might have been a little early, but he was taken at the bottom of the third and evidently interest in him was strong from a couple of other teams. His drafting probably means goodbye to Kenyon Coleman who mostly played on run downs, and there's a chance it could be nearer the end of the road for Ellis as well. The DEs with Hatcher will be Canty, Hatcher, Ratliff, Spears and Ellis. Spears and Ratliff can also play some tackle.
Skyler Green I'm fine with. We need someone in the return game and have for years. Thompson is all right with KR duty, but it was late in the year before he figured out he could move in ways other than straight ahead. Green can also serve as the 4th or 5th receiver, and could eventually be a 3rd. Crayton's no lock for the long term.
Pat Watkins could be something of a steal by some accounts, but I'm not terribly familiar with him. Awful tall and long legged for a safety, but I can't see him being any worse than Keith Davis. A lot of fans wanted Ko Simpson, but that wonderlic score is supposed to have scared some teams off.
Montavious Stanley is fine with me. He can't do much more than stand there and take on blocks, but that's all he really needs to do in our D.
Pat McQuistan. Eh.
E.J. Whitley. Eh, but could develop into a jack of all trades backup.
Mr. Irrelevant time
I'm just glad Andy was able to resist the urges from his undersized RB boner to draft Barclay

Well I didn't mean as an Eagle, but I watched him the past two years frequently destroy ACC competition, despite his size (Wake Forest doesn't exactly have the best offensive line), and I wonder why teams in need of a 3rd down back/KR RB haven't looked at him.
Yeah, Barclay was a great college RB (I'm definitely glad to see the last of him playing against BC), too undersized to do much in the pros though IMO. Westbrook is considered undersized and Barclay is a good 20 lbs lighter than him.
The Eagles should be on the phone with Mike Bell right now.
I wonder if San Fran would have any interest in dealing Eric Johnson now that they've got Davis??
