I do an 'auction style' NCAA pool with some friends every year, but since i'm addicted to gambling i'd be willing to put another one together if anyone is interested. We get together and get drunk and watch the play-in game during the team auction but obviously we could do it online. If there are 7 people interested I'll set it up. These are the rules:
Eight people will draft the 64 teams in random order. (We each get one 15
or 16 seed free) Each person will have 500 points with which to bid on as
many teams as they would like. Winning bidder for each team wins money for
each game won by his team throughout the tourney. I am proposing this pay
schedule this year:
1st round win $6
2nd round win $8
3rd round win $10
4th round win $12
semi-final win $16
final win $16
Each person starts the tournament $62 in the hole. Each win adds to your
total. Example: A team that wins two games would pay $14, the champion will
pay $68. After the tourney you will either pay or get paid based on how
your teams did. Average win/loss is around $20.
How will you do the draft? Conference call? Online chat?
I guess we could do it on AIM or something similar.
And now that I think of it, I guess people will just have to trust me on the random drawing of teams.
I don't really get it, but I'm up for it if you can get enough people. I could also offer the use of my toll-free ready-conference number. There are some minimal advantages to having 25-30 hours of conference calls a week.
it's pretty simple, we pick each team out of a hat, and then each person has 500 'points' to buy that team. so some people end up spending a lot on 2-3 really good teams, while others spread the wealth on a bunch of middle of the road teams. basically, if every single one of your teams loses in the first round, the most you lose is $62. we've been doing this for like 4 years now and the most anyone has ever lost was like $35, and that was me 2 years ago when i blew my wad on st. joes.
I see... it's not a draft at all. Simple auction. Gotcha.
I may set a new losing record this year.
so a team is picked and then all eight people perform an auction on that team...and the high bidder wins it
correct.
I'm not touching Duke with a 10-foot pole. So, are you in, IGY?
yeah what the hell ill do it
what happens if all eight teams 'pass' on a particular squad

it doesn't happen, someone will pay at least 1 for a team, there's no reason not to. and like i said, the 15 and 16 teams are 'freebies', each person gets 1.
lets get this shtein started...
LETS DO IT!!.....COME ON!
i might be in
but i'm having trouble comprehending the concept
I'm in, of course.
shouldn't winning the final game be more than winning a final four game?
im in, btw. i'll figure it out as i go along

true, but that was the only way we figured out to make the money be divided evenly for 8 people. none of your teams will make it anyway, so stop bitching.
sorry sweetie

what part is not making sense? the auction is self explanatory, spend your 500 points on as many or as few teams as you want.
then for every game your team wins, you get paid like i said in the first post.
thats it.
so whoever has the chamion ends up getting $6 for first round win, $8 for 2nd round win, 10 dor 3rd, 12 for 4th, 16 for final four win, and 16 for final win = $68. just for that one team. plus any you win from your other teams.
1st round win $6
2nd round win $8
3rd round win $10
4th round win $12
semi-final win $16
final win $16
yeah, i got it. thanks for the gentle words.
so can we pick tonight
You're all idiots.
we don't even know the field douche bag

normally we pick them out of a hat, you know, because we're all together, but i guess for this i'll just pick them out of a hat and put our names in order. and you guys trust me. considering a number 16 has never won and a number 15 has won like twice maybe, it probably won't matter much.
And now that I think of it, I guess people will just have to trust me on the random drawing of teams.
couldnt you pre draw it by taking an empty bracket and assigning random numbers to the 64 different spots on the sheet
if it's all the same, i'd like a notarized handwritten eyewitness account mailed to me.
im not sure why a random drawing of teams even matters...everyone gets equal shot at each team anyway...its all how you spend your points no?
Does it matter one farging iota what order Mr. Matt draws the farging teams in? You nerve racking sons of bitches, it's like I'm playing with my brother's kids or somethin.
The problem remains that there are only 4 of us right now. Need more participants.

it actually makes a huge difference. because that would give people time to plan their strategy. like some times people save up all of their money for a certain few teams, and if they don't come up until towards the end, people get bargains on some otherwise good teams early on. like last year one of the number one teams came up 2nd to last and their were two dudes saving up points to get them. basically an all-in type of deal, so even though the guy had like 200 points left, he got outbid by the guy with 215.
it's hard to explain but it matters.

No offense, but I already have enough of my money riding on an NCAA butter joint with your friends.
4 more people won't be a problem at all.
nevermind
im a dope

I'm still sticking by my earlier assessment that anyone who cares is an idiot.

i dont get this dont the winnings far surpass what you pay into the pot
no, it's comes out, basically you're putting $62 in the pot. if not a single of of your teams wins a game, you lose $62. 8 x 62 = 496
1st round win $6 32 teams x 6 = 192
2nd round win $8 16 teams x 8 = 128
3rd round win $10 8 teams x 10 = 80
4th round win $12 4 teams x 12 = 48
semi-final win $16 2 teams x 16 = 32
final win $16 1 team x 16 = 16
496 bucks.

you could have told me that 5 minutes sooner.
sorry....i didnt realize my ignorance until 05:04:49
i was counting games in each round not winners
and the amounts can basically be anything, if we want the overall winner to get $32, which kind of makes sense, then the ante gets raised by $2 a person. i just used our scoring from last year but now that mo brought it up it would make sense.
I was willing to risk $62, but $64?!? NO!
thats what i figured.
But seriously... It's fair that the final game winner gets $32, so let's do that.
Agreed.
i changed my mind.
This thing going to happen?
when/how are we going to do the auction? AOL instant messanger chat room works for me, if it works for everyone else
I want to know who else is in.
crap, with my other 45 pools i forgot about this one, if you're all interested still, lets do the auction tomorrow night. i haven't asked anyone else to be i it so it looks like as of now it's the 5 of us. i can get one more person for sure, so if you guys know 2 people who would be interested, lets figure it out.
would doing it over aim work for everyone?
im sure i can get one
doesnt the draft take hours
Matt sucks.
I might be able to do it over AIM tomorrow night, but I'd prefer to have 8 people unless we change the pay structure.
yeah this thing crashed and burned
It burns when I pee
we should do it with 8 people for sure. and yeah, the draft should probably take like 2 hours.
I'm still in and AIM is fine.
8 o'clock tomorrow night? does that work? and igy if your friend wants in, we got room. i tentatively i have 2 more.
sorry for sleeping on this one fellas, i had a blackout drunk weekend which i'm still recovering from.
i play basketball until around 9:30 on Tuesday nights, so i'm out

I'd rather go later. Like 10.
10 is fine with me too, i just figured since it was a school night some people might not want to stay up late.
