Title: The Big 5.5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on December 09, 2009, 10:08:19 PM
deserving

the joe is right in it at half against nova...the perfect example of a big 5 game being close simply because its a big 5 game...st joes coming off losses to rider and cornell against a really good undefeated nova team...should be a complete rout

its on the deuce for anyone that cares

big 5 aint ever gonna be what it was but its games like this that make it worthwhile to keep around

big 5 basketball is fun.

yes it is but as an FYI this is an all big 5 sports thread than can include anything from football recruiting to palestra double headers to penn lacrosse

btw in the coming weeks two different big 5 teams will play the #1 team in the country

includge a sarge vs lil guy special when kansas visits temple

nova is starting to bury the joe

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on December 09, 2009, 10:47:08 PM
kansas is literally going to beat them by 50 points. maybe more. temple is a fraudulent team this year and will be exposed once they stop playing crap teams.

lol.  i did start digging ku basketball when i lived in kc and i still follow them very closely but against temple, i'll still be rooting for the home team.  of course, i'm not going to be all pissy when ku goes all rock chalk jayhawk on that ass though.

nova on a 4th and a foot at the goaline just scored to take the lead with 11 minutes left

this is after being outgained in the first half like 250-70
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on December 11, 2009, 11:17:59 PM
really gutsy call to win this game for nova...4th and one with 3 minutes left on w&m 20 up 1...instead of kicking the fg and forcing a tocudown to win they go for it get and go to the finals

i thought i covered this

bowls for pos schools like temple = good
bowls for the top 8 programs = pointless
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on December 12, 2009, 01:13:17 AM
so bowls are good only when YOU care about them

got it
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on December 12, 2009, 01:17:29 AM
no idiot

bowls are good for teams that play in the mac and 6 and 7 win schools in power conferences. its at least something.

bowls are pointless for national title contenders. since the top 10 or so teams are interchangeable, you have a playoff to find a winnnnnar.

what are you talking about

the bowl temple is in means 1 billion times less than the bowl penn state is in

again the temple bowl means something to you because you like temple

lsu penn state destroys temple whoever

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on December 12, 2009, 06:32:51 PM
no shtein

but psu and lsu fans expect national titles. if there was an 8 team playoff, theyd expect to get into it every year. temple people would not. they will be happy with mac titles, random bowl games and having 'a shot' when they play power conferences schools 1-2 times a year.

of course the payout will always be better for the citrus bowl vs. eaglesbank bowl, but overall this season was totally forgettable for psu. meanwhile it was the greatest season in tu history because they made a bowl game.

Great time.

1. Dunphy is a god. Dude can coach. Not a lot of talent but he gets the most out of them and they all play within their limits.
2. Nova barely beat st joe and lost to temple. Gonna get GOT in the big east.
3. Open seat on press row so I sat next to my replacement at ttn and saw pretty much all the old faces. Nostalgia!
4. Free shot of yeager at the bar after the game.

Kansas is next

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: Eagles_Legendz on January 02, 2010, 10:14:19 PM
I can't believe how bad Marquette is at the end of games.  They're a legit team that can't close at all.  Lose by 2 vs Nova, 1 vs WVU, 1 vs FSU, 4 vs NCST and could have easily won at Wisconsin too.  Dunno if it's a coaching issue or not, but they just collapse inside the last 4 minutes.
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on January 02, 2010, 10:23:13 PM
coaching gets them to that point...buzz willie is a really good coach....they just dont have the players this year to get them over the top...in fact talent wise this is the weakest marquette team in quite a while
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: Eagles_Legendz on January 02, 2010, 10:28:43 PM
They just don't have any depth.  I think Buzz is a good coach too and I always like how Marquette plays.  They just don't close.  Maybe since they only run 7 or 8 deep their legs just don't sustain at the end of games.

Nice win by Nova @ WVU + the refs tonight (and before anyone says I'm just saying that -- if you watched the game it was the worst officiated game this season I've seen.  Bilas and co spent the entire game talking about the refs).

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread

1. temple is sort of fraudulent....squeaking past a clearly inferior big east team in gtown at home and the always mediocre maryland in a half empty verizon center arent exactly impressive

2. the a10 is horrendous this year and duquesne isnt half bad for this pos conference

3. at this point temple isnt a lock to get an at large and its quite possible the a10 gets 1 school in

no they good

cuse is a fraudulent team and boeheim is to blame. look at his ooc schedule. no true road games, no road trips, not leaving going further south than jersey.

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on January 22, 2011, 01:58:10 PM
boeheim does that every year and it never effects them...if you think they are a fraud then its because you think their players stink...not because of their schedule

anyway theres no fraud #3 teams in college basketball...its not good enough to create frauds...syracuse is as good as any team in the land...but they can also lose to anyone in the top 20...just because cbb stinks and has no real good teams

nice hold on my nova...they could have easily folded after that cuse run and they didnt...oh how nice is it to have three very good guards including two seniors

you cant spell temple without nit

and even if they luck into the ncaa's they arent getting run out of the first round again

maybe if dunphys teams didnt play bullshtein halfcourt 1950s era basketball they wouldnt lose to someone named kevin freeze
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on January 22, 2011, 05:24:47 PM
i agree and i think he would play his same style anyway but with this particular team he actually has to play that way...they dont have a single player on the team with a handle...so they have to pass the ball 50 times to hopefully get an open shot...fernandez is painfully slow...i hate watching him so much

cummings should solve this problem as he is ultra quick...just gotta hope dunph realizes hes not coaching in the ivy league anymore
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on January 22, 2011, 05:31:21 PM
juan is injured

he can actually move a bit its just dunph has never taken the training wheels off--but with good reason. fernandez is largely the same player he was 2 years ago when i covered the team.

its a simple matter of recruiting. fran isnt the greatest and hes losing kids because of the a10/big east thing. he cant overcome that. but thad matta and others could and thats why they arent in the a10 anymore.

I think Martelli is an extremely overrated coach, and its time for to go.  The a-10 coaching gig is not a career job... it's for a young, hungry coach to come in, make a name for himself, make a nice little run, then move on to a bigger program.  The fact that they have grandfathered Martelli in there is an absolute joke.  Vastly overrated coach in my opinion.

As for St. Joe's being in the bottom 10 of d-1 programs... I'm hoping that's just an exagerration to make a point.  You realize how much awful conferences/awful teams there are throughout the land.

so the big east is left with 6 schools....and 3 could be gone tomorrow....which leaves south florida, rutgers and cinci and a host of catholic basketball schools. great. way to farging make a big stink and ruin the big 5 out of nothing. your farging zesty conference is finished and you destroy temple just to remind everyone who farging thinks theyre boss.

Unless you graduated from a Big 5 school, I don't think there are too many people in/around Philly who care about 1 more than the others.  Which ever school rolls out the best team from year to year is the school that most people get behind.  I'm a straight front runner in that regard.  I'd like to see them all do well but I'll put most of my focus on the one that's the goodest.
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread

if you root for nova, you are a traitor. it shouldnt be a problem here because aside from SD and the first 10 years of igy's life none of you are from philly. so i expect you all to hop on the bandwagon should empty armani suit jay wright luck his pretty little ass into some wins.

they are the antithesis of a big 5 team and a philly school. they belong in a zesty a10-level conference with st johns, marquette and the other catholic child fondler protecting schools. people who like nova defend catholicism to its core/are suburbanites too afraid to step foot into north philly or really any area thats not 99% white.

phil martelli seems like a good person compared to the nova execs.

what i want is this:
rutgers, cinci, temple, south florida, central florida, umass and 2 others. uconn? wv? louisville? if they are all gone take 2 from the mac...maybe try to get navy in this...but keep it east coast.

8 team league, leaves room for 5 non conference games (so temple can play psu, umd, notre dame, etc.). non bcs aq  league but its legit enough that a 12-0 team from here will get some pub. its a better situation than the mac and since the big east is being killed internally by spiteful catholics from the main line, its a good landing spot for everyone else who cant get into the acc/big 12.

lol @ all time classic. slow your roll, homie.

but yes, hopefully this is the last time temple plays lossale in an a10 game. im cautiously optimistic about these big east rumors. if they are true then its great for the university. if its not, then fine. well keep owning the a10 and wasting everyones time in the mac playing directional michigan schools and backpedaling into bowl games against pretend states in new mexico.

side note: if temple can beat st. blows on saturday and somehow got through back to back true road big 5 game ringer, theyll win the a10 outright, will be ranked in the top 15 and could be a 4 seed in the ncaas. after st. blows its umass at home (lol) and @ fordham (lolololol).

there are a lot of reasons for that but the short answer is philly is a big time town and temple is small time

notice how temple can draw against big 5 teams, duke, kansas, gtown, etc. only get 3k for st bonaventure. hmmmm.

big east more or less is big time. football is a catastrophe but its better than the mac.

temple can be legit if they play the right teams. st blows and lossale are jokes every day of the week.

sj joes support destroys temples
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on February 25, 2012, 08:39:29 PM
the main reason for the that is temple doesnt have an identity...if it does its philadelphia

a good % of students stop living on campus after freshman year....lot of part-time, commuter students who are there to just get a degree, dont have time or interest or means to get involved in anything on campus

the mentality carries over to everyone and there is an enormous amount of apathy on campus about the school and subsequently about the sports. however when it counts and when it gets big temple people are there (a10 tourney, city games, top 25 games, etc.). if that becomes the entire schedule im feeling the season ticket base will increase and theyll get 7-8k in the house for early season games against st peters and big east games against houston and central florida. then of course fill it up for uconn, gtown, nd, etc.

football will be a slight to marginal improvement. bottom line they are still many many rungs behind the top of the ladder. if temple gets into big east the hoops team can easily become a top 10 team.

the road to the nit?

Can dunphy win a tourney game.

lol @ this now

hes won 2, actually.

not that im the least bit pleased with his tourney history at temple, they lost twice as an 11 seed and lost to a 2 seed. the one game you can get on them for is losing to cornell.

otherwise he lost with a bunch of brainiac nerds at penn to top 10 teams. what a terrible coach.

lol at pushing temple to be in big time conferences and then defending a coach who really should be coaching high school...or ivy league as he was before

ironically tho in the new big east he probably is in the middle of the pack as far as coaches...so it may be a perfect fit

to say the least it aint a bad thing temple is getting the hell out of this pos conference
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread

the biggest segment of the crowd will be atlantic city tourists who decide the day of the game that it might be cool to go to a ncaa conference tourney final

as for temple you cant say they are lucky to get out of the a-10 on the day they had an epic meltdown loss...christ the reason the final might be this bad is because of temple losing....they arent above the league or better than anyone else...shtein xaiver is a better program than temple

maybe i should have said 30 years?

the last 4 years of the chaney era and the first of dunph were terrible. other than that theyve basically always been in the ncaa's.

meanwhile no other a10 program, not even your beloved xavier, has done that.

the mac we owe a big thank you to for taking us in when we were seriously talking about killing the program (something im still kind of for). the a10 owes US 1 million on the way out because without temple they would be the american east conference

they absolutely do....they are right on the bubble as we speak and could go either way

root hard for X today because if st bonnie wins it really hurts the bubble
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on March 11, 2012, 01:36:01 PM
their schedule in general is weak as farg...in the 200's i believe...and even the ooc schedule is in the way upper 100's

the 19 wins in a row tho is super impressive...plus they had to play their conference final on a road court (vcu in richmond)

really tho the biggest thing going for them this is that the bubble itself is the weakest its been in years
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on March 11, 2012, 01:37:10 PM
their sos is horrendous but they have a lot of wins and a regular season title in a respectable conference

if they get in they are one of the last teams and are def. playing in that first 4 bullshtein

There's a chance X doesn't make it but they're probably 70% in so bonnies likely stole from someone.

Drexel's profile isn't that good but they were torrid down the stretch.  They looked like a tourney team but probably don't have the numbers.  Eye test v what's on the sheet.

looking at Palm/Lunardi/Glockner's brackets, and there's absolutely no consensus.  Pretty remarkable how bad it is this year.  Palm has Northwestern in and they aren't even on Glockner/Lunardi's last four out, and Lunardi and Glockner both have Drexel in the last four in but Palm doesn't have them in 1st four out.  One of them has Marshall in and they aren't even on the others radars.

and i get what you are saying but college is different...it actually means something to make the ncaa's...and not doing it can mean a job for a coach....especially at schools like temple and st joes who know they have little chance to advance in the tournament...so making it is everything

temple is 4-6 and tomorrow is the last game. dont have a 12th game because of the last minute change to the terrible big east schedule. so if they beat cuse and are 5-6 they are the first pick for a bowl game provided enough 6-6 doesnt dont qualify.

currently 63 teams are bowl eligible. there are 70 slots for games. heres who is left. by my estimations 4 teams already have guaranteed wins 3 teams all have 2 cracks at getting to 6. so its not looking good. but at temple we fight fight fight for the cherry and white. juice williams ftw.

lol when i was in philly the sports thing was 5 a month...its 7 for some with time warner

red zone is the greatest thing of all time and pays for itself. outside of football season its awful.

fun
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on January 20, 2013, 04:20:19 AM
you cant get the feel of a game when you only get 5% of the plays....i like to watch the whole thing or most of it and watch the coaches tendecies and philosophies....this is something you can never get on garbage ass red zone

red zone is for fantasy heads not football heads
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on January 20, 2013, 04:30:08 AM
i get that plenty

the important teams play enough 430 and primetime games and i see them there. red zone 100 johnson when the eagles arent on is the greatest 3.5 hours of the week period no debate

otherwise you miss too much. too much going on. i have no clue how i watched football as a kid without red zone. it sucked.
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: PoopyfaceMcGee on January 20, 2013, 04:33:03 AM
Assuming the Eagles are on at 1pm and the game means SOMETHING, here is the list:

1. At a bar with good view of the Eagles game, decent views of many other games, and a smartphone to check stats
2. Watching the Eagles game at home and flipping to the Red Zone channel during commercials

As is said here a bit too often, "That's it. That's the list."
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on January 20, 2013, 04:37:42 AM
i dont do fantasy...i just bet...but i agree with ff

when the eagles are on im all on that game...during commercials will glance at other tvs or flip to red zone, depending on where i am

when eagles arent on im on the chair with red zone and thats it until 430. its golden.
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on January 20, 2013, 04:46:13 AM
you dont see games on red zone...you see a couple plays

if you were talking nfl package i could understand....but red zone is miniscule nuggets of nonsense
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: PoopyfaceMcGee on January 20, 2013, 04:51:59 AM
I basically gave up gambling in favor of higher stakes fantasy sports, so the preferences I choose are different than those of someone who tries to scout talent or handicap games.

Havas' method of watching is highly preferable to those guys. They want to see the little details. All the scoring plays will show up on the stat sheet anyway.

obviously at some points i want more skins giants cowboys less patriots saints rams but its generally perfect

last channel is infinitely better than red zone imo....you can watch espn.com or yahoo for scoring plays but to get the true feel of a game you have to watch full series...punts three and outs....all that junk...

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on January 20, 2013, 05:08:01 AM
gross underestimation

red zone shifts between what turns out to be 4-5 games. often goes play for play between them. lets say theres 10 games...3 you see essentially all of it...3 just a few thing...2 just scoring plays and some big stuff...2 just tds but well after they happened
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread

My personal preference is aligned to MDS, but I think IGY has the better argument here - considering both of you are gamblers and neither are really into fantasy football. If you want to be successful in the long term betting on sports, you have to watch all the "boring" details of those sports to have an edge.

the results havent been there and wont be there this season. jerome allen is a joke, dunph would look good back at penn. hed be good at temple if just making the tournament was good enough.

at this point we know temples ceiling under him...this is it. generally gonna have tournament teams, will win 1 or 2 very nice regular season jawns, might or might not win a game in the ncaas, unlikely to make it out of the first weekend.

if thats ok for by you dunph can stick. but im of the mindset that temple can do better.

though hes not a perfect coach. hes so good to the philly media they make him seem a lot better than he is. and he was also very nice to me and i was just a dork college kid. but that doesnt matter. they need someone who can win a recruiting battle or two against syracuse and nova.

i get the gambling aspect

the lack of competition is meaningless. nobody watches espnu as it is, especially early in the morning, and especially when they are showing temple and dayton. i have no clue why it exists other than espn has so much money it cant eat a mistake and not notice it on the books. and to appease gamblers.

also temple is an atrocity and i highly suggest taking dayton. i cant go against my school but believe me they are a colossal mess and never ever win in dayton even when they were good.

The bubble is awful right now - I think it would take a mess with conference tourneys for any of the 3 to be left out at this point.  Nova has 4 wins against teams in the top 16 in the RPI - second most in CBB and LaSalle/Temple keep winning while other bubble teams lose for the most part.

temple - lasalle - the joe - nova all won last nite....avg margin of victory was 18 pts

biggest win was nova who beat georgetown to put them solidly back in the tourney

3 wins against top 5 teams and 10 wins in the Big East regular season.  I read something this morning that said 94% of Big East teams with 10 or more wins have made the tourney, so yeah, they're in.

If they're not in something is seriously wrong with the system.

they have a ton of terrible losses too

st joe brackets face lunardi had em as a 14 before the gtown win. so they are right there on the bubble. 2 losses to close the year + other spots get eaten up they may be out

Nova only has 2 sub-100 losses, so, no.  They have far fewer bad losses than most bubble teams and better wins than most at large teams in general.  Plus they have no regular season games left, just the BET.  I think they're ~ a 10 seed right now.  Barring tons of crazy conference tourney results I don't think they have much to sweat now.

Probably.  Would be nice if one of the 3 got out of the first weekend.  Good turn around by Nova this year though after winning 13 last yr.

you cant look at their record on an island...you have to compare it to teams they are fighting with for a spot....i wont claim to know every bubble teams resume but id like to see a worse loss than nova's to columbia by 18...that said they dont ahve as many bad losses as a lot of other teams

also they cant finish the year with two straight losses....their regular season schedule is over

i had them barely out before last night now i have them definitely IN

lasalle with a real nice test today at st louis on nbcs at 130...i jut want them to show up and not get run out the gym....a win is probably unrealistic

Who are you comparing them to?  Middle Tenn who has two top 100 wins?  Nova has the 3rd most wins against top15 RPI teams in the country.  Compare that to the likes of UK etc.  They prob end up as a ten seed let alone close to the bubble at this pt.   Same with Temple.  Assuming they beat Mass they shouldn't even be close to the bubble with all bubble teams losing.  LaSalle is the one who might be in trouble tho I hope not.
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread

lasalle is done i dont think thats even a question

i guess the difference with me and bracketology is i go more by eye test than resume....ive seen middle tennessee three times this year and on the second viewing i realized how good they were and are def more deserving than nova...however i agree resume wise they dont match up....which is why i said nova is in...but i personally dont think they belong....they had almost 30 turnovers last night...they will lose in the first round without question and to me thats a marker as to whether someone should be in...i want teams in who i can say to myself they will win one game

kentucky is a joke and shouldnt even be in the conversation

i agree temple should be in if they win this game

I think LaSalle is literally a coin flip.  All SEC teams are losing, so is UVa etc.  laSalle still has pretty good computer numbers and most still have them just in.

Nova just plays ugly but I don't think you can keep out a team that beat L'ville/Syracuse/Gtown/Marquette.  Thing about nova is they turn the ball over so much that if they run into a team with a D as good as Louisville they're in big trouble.  Against a team with a lax D they can play with them because they play such good D themselves usually.
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on March 15, 2013, 11:30:36 PM
nova is in...im not arguing that...i just think they stink and shouldnt be in...they will not win a game in the tourney

md is ahead of lasalle now and md is prob not in

i think temples bad losses keep them out

Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: Eagles_Legendz on March 15, 2013, 11:34:02 PM
MD is a joke.  Forget top 100 wins.  Maryland has FIVE wins against the top150.  Five.  They have 15 against sub 150 teams.  That's god awful even for bubble teams.  They should still have to win tomorrow.  If they bump out LaSalle just because of two Duke games it'll be a joke when you look at the rest of what they did.
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on March 15, 2013, 11:38:39 PM
cant argue that but again we come from different places....i dont look at top 150 wins as much as i look at the teams...which probably makes you smarter than me because the selection comittee is going to go full resume...but in my eyes if md and lasalle play ten times md wins 7 or 8...

however i fully admit i cant separate who i think is better from who the bracketology will deem better

Well I'm biased too because I've watched MD play like ass against terrible wake teams twice recently.  I dunno how much the committee values close losses.  They should IMO but I think they say they don't.  Might depend on if southern miss steals a bid/Bama beats UF etc. MD will be interesting regardless.  zesty RPI.  zesty SOS.  Two huge wins vs Duke and one good win vs Nc St.  My gut says if they win tomorrow they're in.  If they lose they're out.  Reminds me of VT a few yrs in a row getting left out for bad SOS even with beating Duke.  But the bubble is so bad right now that they might make it when vt didn't.

Need ole miss to lose this game.

and you just reminded me by bringing up ole miss and mizzou...i shouldnt care about that game either way but god damn those two teams shouldnt be playing in a conf tourney....its a joke

Haha.  I turned it off at halftime and went to bed.  Just as quickly as they got within single digits, Wichita St blew it back up to 16.  LaSalle just didn't have the size or even the athleticism to compete with them.  They pretty much needed to shoot lights out to have a shot and 36% FG isn't getting it done.  At least it looks like they played better in the 2nd half, but they dug themselves too deep.  Oh well.

its cool and all that espn is doing this, but maybe they should have worked something out with vilenova to get the primetime game. of course vile's child rapist conference (sorry, the priest league) has a deal with fox. so...whatever.

Nova's offense consisted of dribbling the ball up the court, standing there passing it around the arc for 30 seconds, then tossing up a three from a mile out or turning it over trying to get it inside.   It was pathetic, actually.

been there a thousand times before but havent had as much fun at the palestra as i did yesterday for lasalle temple....you couldnt hear yourself talk it was so loud and that was with the tickets split...cant imagine what that place would be like jammed up with the entire building going crazy for the same team

the bars before the game were also so much fun with all the chants back n forth and shots a million....its almost a cliche at this point but its true that no other place in the world has something anywhere close to the big 5....its such a source of pride for the city and one of my favorite things in the world

if youve never been to the palestra you need to go once before you die....lasalle temple are doing it again next year which is probably a good time to pay a visit to the mecca

Sadly I've never been there.  Always wanted to, just never got around to it.  Might have to add it to the 2015 calendar.

And yeah, Big 5 is one of a kind.  Too bad the city has a hard time fielding more than 1 really good team at a time.  Most people around the country don't even know the Big 5 exists and that's probably due to the fact that you hardly ever get 2 city teams that are ranked in the top 25 playing against each other.  In fact, a lot of people that I've met around the country over the years knew that all 5 schools played in the same city but never really put 2 and 2 together to realize that there's are 5 college programs within blocks of each other and were major rivals.    And most of them were like "That sounds really cool and all, but the teams just don't do anything for me."

my dream is to be in the same bracket as nova....like temple is the 9 and nova is the 2.

They wouldn't play until the elite 8 then.

Also think Nova is for real this year, though if I were them I'd rather the 2 seed in the East than the 1 in the West with Arizona.

temple-la salle at 7
joe-penn at 930

typical luck for philly sports that this dude goes to a non philly rival because his dad couldnt keep his rape in his pants

for anyone that doesnt know, temple had brunson locked down, mostly because they were giving pops a job on the bench. then he gets booked, they cant hire him (aaron mckie gets it instead) and the kid bolts for some small catholic school miles outside of philly.

and of course he murders temple

Yeah hart was hit pretty hard that last play.  Seton Hall is pretty high variance.  Talented but I could see them as equally likely going to sweet 16/getting beaten by 10 in round1.

I remember thinking last year around this time that temple was in.  Wonder if they're about to get screwed again.

QuoteThe leaders in the clubhouse for Big 12 expansion remain BYU, Cincinnati and Connecticut. The next tier includes South Florida, Central Florida, Memphis, Colorado State, Houston, Boise State and Tulane. If the league does add four schools, there's really no standout candidate for that fourth slot. (Houston has the best program and television market of available schools, but there's still some hesitancy within the state of Texas to allow the Cougars to use the Big 12 to potentially leap over current members). Schools like Temple, San Diego State and Northern Illinois don't really have a chance, but will give it a shot anyway. "They're going to open it up like an auction," one Big 12 source said. "They don't want it to be like they're out there soliciting schools."
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on July 20, 2016, 09:20:09 AM
i wont pretend to know anything about realignment, but i just dont get why a major conference would want any of those teams over the biggest school in one of the biggest markets in the country.

with the acc network launching in 5 years or so, maybe they move to 16 and grab temple so they can put that channel on in an extra 3-4 million homes.
Title: Re: The Big 5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on July 20, 2016, 09:45:42 AM
big 12 doesn't have a tv network so market size doesn't mean much to them otherwise they would be fighting way harder to get Houston

i think they have it right...id put temple alone behind Memphis south and central florida and ahead of the rest

but I think they got it right with byu uconn and cincy....again Houston is number one with a bullet on the entire list but as they mention the idiotic texas politics of it all is messing with that

but i fundamentally dont even understand why these conferences want cable networks when cable is a dying industry

great story...

QuoteA son of Philly hoops: How his father's path and his city upbringing shaped Temple's Shizz Alston Jr.

If the shot clock were running, it may have expired. At the very least, Levan Shawn Alston Jr., better known to Temple basketball fans as "Shizz," would have been hit with a backcourt violation as he stood there, frozen, unsure where to go or what to think.

But this wasn't on a basketball court and there was no clock, save for the one on the wall. Shizz Alston Jr. was at his North Philly home, looking on with a young boy's wonder at his father, who was back from one of his overseas expeditions.

"When I'd walk in the door, he'd just stand there for at least 15 seconds just because he was so surprised," says Levan Alston. "Then he'd run to me, jump on me, happy and crying. Those were the best times."

A key contributor on Temple's 1994-95 and 1995-96 NCAA Tournament teams, Levan launched a decade-plus professional basketball career after graduating — first in China with later stops in Greece, Cyprus and Italy.

That time was also special for another reason. His first child, whom he would soon nickname "Shizz," was born in 1996, a few months into his professional career. It wasn't easy, of course, to leave his boy on the other side of the world. But the arrangement, in some ways, proved beneficial as Shizz, from a young age, was inspired by his dad's hardwood success and motivated to follow in his footsteps.

That motivation helped lead Shizz to where he is today: a star senior at his dad's alma mater.

"He had to grow up faster," Levan says. "He was the man of the house at the time. And you can see it now by his leadership qualities. Growing up in the way he did, he always had to be a leader. I think that's helping him now in his senior year."

Through the first part of the 2018-19 campaign, his senior year could not be going much better. A leading contender for Big 5 Player of the Year (one of his big goals coming into the season), Shizz ranks second in the city in scoring with 19.4 points per game and first in assists with 5.1 per contest.

Twice this season, the senior guard has eclipsed 30 points in a game, and his career-high 31-point effort versus Massachusetts on Dec. 12 came with three clutch free throws to win it in the closing seconds. Three days later, in a victory over Davidson, the 6-foot-4 guard had 11 assists and one turnover, which Temple head coach Fran Dunphy called an "extraordinary stat." The next game, he torched Drexel for 25 points and had zero turnovers. And most recently, he scored the final seven points in overtime to lead the Owls to a thrilling come-from-behind win at Wichita State on Sunday, helping Temple improve to an impressive 11-3 record heading into Wednesday's home showdown with unbeaten Houston.

What's the reason for Alston's big jump as a senior? If you're the poetic type, you might consider the fact that he switched from the No. 3 to the No. 10 this season — the same number his dad wore on his Temple jersey a couple of decades ago.

"At first, it felt different," says Shizz, who enjoyed solid but less prolific seasons as a sophomore and junior. "Then I started scoring a little more and I was like, 'I kind of like this number!"

Perhaps for some, a father's legacy could weigh you down. But it's only lifted Shizz to greater heights.

"I think he handles it great," Dunphy says. "Is it hard? I guess it could be. But I don't think Shizz makes anything hard. I think he just has a great outlook on life."

He adopted that outlook early on. When he was 5 or 6, Shizz made a point to talk to his dad on the phone as often as he could (in the pre-Facetime era, those calls weren't cheap), usually spouting off random NBA stats and discussing trades he'd learn about from watching ESPN all morning. From an even younger age, he'd enjoy the flow and rhythm of a basketball game, his eyes locked on the court from his stroller while his dad, during breaks from his team in China, would partake in epic pickup games at McGonigle Hall with well-known Philly hoopsters like Lynn Greer, Marc Jackson, Alvin Williams and Kerry Kittles.

"When he was a newborn, he would just watch basketball," Levan says. "That was the one thing that kept him quiet. He never cried at games."

Some of young Shizz's favorite things to watch were the tapes his dad would send back of his games in China. His pride was on full display in kindergarten when he brought a team poster that featured his father, the words in Chinese, to hang up in his classroom — which his elementary school friends thought was the "coolest thing in the world," Shizz now says. And fierce loyalty swelled inside of him when he got to travel to Greece a couple of years later to watch one of his dad's road games, with the home fans heckling Levan throughout.

The pride went both ways. When back in Philly, Levan says he went to all of Shizz's Biddy basketball games, usually imploring the referee to not let his son get away with double-dribbling even if that's what all of the other 5-year-olds were doing. Once, he watched in amazement as Shizz tripped, hit his face on the court and his tooth fell out. "And he picked up the tooth and gave his mom the tooth and ran back on the court without crying," Levan recalls. "And I was like, 'This kid might have it right here!' That was one of my proudest moments."

It would be easy to say Shizz was born with that toughness but, in fact, it was learned. Through his father's friendships, Shizz got to know former NBA players Rasheed Wallace (Levan's high school teammate at Philly Public League powerhouse Simon Gratz), Aaron McKie (one of Levan's best friends who also played at Gratz and Temple), and Jerome Allen (another one of Levan's best friends and Shizz's godfather). When McKie — now a Temple assistant who will take over as the Owls' head coach next season — played for the Sixers, he'd sometimes leave tickets for Shizz (who "got to chill with Allen Iverson a couple of times"). And later, Shizz went to almost of all of Penn's home games when Allen, a former star guard at Penn, was the Quakers' head coach between 2009 and 2015.

More than being a well-traveled student of Philly hoops, however, Shizz had the unique privilege of working out with many of the city's premier guards, soaking in their smarts, determination and grit.

"Him watching these guys and seeing how successful they were, he always wanted to get in the gym, he always thought it was a way of life," Levan says. "Shizz is a product of Philadelphia basketball. ... One thing we're always known for is having toughness, guards from Philadelphia. I wanted him to know they were tough, how hard they played. Guys play tough in Philadelphia. That's the kind of basketball player I wanted him to be."

The most valuable hoops lessons Shizz ever got, though, didn't come from an NBA star. They came from his dad, who served as an assistant coach at the Haverford School during Shizz's final two seasons there and pushed him in workouts every day in the summer. That's the main reason, Shizz says, that he became an ESPN Top 100 recruit for the Class of 2015 (one of his biggest high school goals) and the Gatorade Pennsylvania State Player of the Year.

And when it was time to decide where he'd go to college, even though he had enticing offers from Notre Dame, Marquette, VCU and other Division I programs, Shizz knew in his heart he wanted to wear the same uniform as his father, in the city where he grew up, on the same campus he visited as a baby.

"When it came down to it," he says, "I'm a Philly guy."

Shizz's decision to go to Temple was exciting for Levan, who wasn't necessarily shy about making his opinion on the matter known. And not surprisingly, he's been a courtside fixture at Temple games over the past four seasons, cheering on his son, telling him to be smart, get his teammates involved and be aggressive.

"I hear him sometimes," Shizz laughs. "It was a little worse in high school and AAU because he was right there. There's a little more people in the crowd now."

The father and son also like to engage in some playful banter with Shizz reminding his dad that he's shattered all of his Temple records. That's fine with Levan, a steady pass-first point guard in his day, who happily admits that "Shizz is a much better scorer than me." But there are still two things dad can boast about at family gatherings: he's never lost to his son one-on-one, mainly because he's stopped playing him. And he made two NCAA Tournaments at Temple after arriving as a transfer from the University of New Orleans, while Shizz has only gotten to the Big Dance once, as a freshman reserve on the Owls in 2016.

"The only thing I haven't passed him (on) yet is NCAA Tournaments," Shizz says. "Everything else I've passed him."

Shizz, of course, would love to make one more NCAA Tournament to match his dad, especially since this is Dunphy's last year in charge. So would Levan, who would also almost certainly be one of the most excited Temple fans at March Madness.

No matter how this season plays out, though, Levan knows he doesn't have to worry about Shizz's future anymore. Shizz graduated from Temple early with a degree in marketing. He had an internship with a real estate company last summer. He's gotten into wine and the Center City restaurant scene.

And if the NBA doesn't come calling, the Temple senior who's been to more than 10 countries and whose Twitter handle is "InternatlShizz" certainly might be able to enjoy a productive pro career overseas.

Just like his dad. Following in his footsteps once again.

"When he puts his mind to something," Levan says, "there's usually a good outcome.

"I'm extremely proud of him."

Im not sure...cause of Covid i think it depends on how they seed this year...like Drexel was a caa six seed which is fairly low in a bad conference but they also were a pre season favorite who only played TWO home games this year...how they reconcile stuff like that I don't know

also it depends on how many other low seeds win auto bids

its not the fairest comp but northeastern won the caa in 2019 as a 2 seed and got on the 13 line

non Villanova big 5 teams are 6-8 right now....12 of the games have been against some of the worst small schools you can imagine

the best of the 14 games is a loss to usc

this could go down as the worst single season group of big 5 teams ever

Title: Re: The Big 5.5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on February 07, 2022, 08:55:55 PM
i know nobody watches college basketball, i certainly dont, but the quality of play in this game is appalling. neither temple or usf are good teams but neither are especially bad. this is a really rough watch...what is this sport? cfb is a great table setter for the nfl. this isnt even the same sport they play in the nba
Title: Re: The Big 5.5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on February 07, 2022, 09:30:31 PM
I watch it but definitely not a ton....watched the whole Duke uva game tonight but this is the exact reason it's my least favorite sport....the quality of play is embarrassing....I won't even compare it to the nba I compare it to CFB in the sense that I can't believe how far away cbb is from than nba compared to CFB to the nfl

Title: Re: The Big 5.5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on February 26, 2022, 07:01:28 PM
I mean they are on the bubble with temple...but Dayton was favored by double digits...more than the line tho Lasalle usually loses by 20 to teams like that
Title: Re: The Big 5.5 Sports Thread
Post by: MDS on February 26, 2022, 07:18:11 PM
cute !

temple was knocking on the bubble door during the win streak last month, theyve lost a bunch of games since but have a decent chance of getting a bye in the AAC tourney. really bad year for that conference.
Title: Re: The Big 5.5 Sports Thread

Title: Re: The Big 5.5 Sports Thread

they were 11-6, 4-2 and had a road date at SMU. wins over vandy, ucf and and cinci. CBB stinks, this qualifies as consideration had they pulled off the smu upset. they didnt, they lost a bunch of other games and here we are.

ride or die baby

i dont pay enough attention to recruiting but i have no idea why they cant get like the 3 star philly guys to stay home...its understandable the 5 star dudes are going big time but like temple's roster has i think 1 guy from the city. what?

temple hasnt made a second weekend since 2001, la salle has made the tournament 1 time in my life and i cant remember the last time penn won the ivy. its a rough scene out there
Title: Re: The Big 5.5 Sports Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on December 22, 2022, 09:44:47 AM
lasalle plays in essentially a glorified ymca gym...their facilities are beyond atrocious...even when zesty all the other city schools can fall back on cool ass venues with atmospheres and great atmospheres when they are good...temple might be the exception....their venue is average at best but at least its a legit arena...lasalles "arena" has four basketball courts and is used for intermural sports when the team isnt playing....the crowd even when they are not horrible is no better than a high school crowd
Title: Re: The Big 5.5 Sports Thread

triple header in december at the center. they really set this thing up to put god awful temple in the final since they have the biggest alumni base.
