So I just got a digital camera the other day and I'm loving it. Ive always loved photography, almost went to school for it, but decided otherwise. Someday Id like to make a photo lab and do it the old way, but right now the digital camera is so easy to use, edit and share. I thought Id start a thread to post your pics, digital or film.
I bought a Canon PowerShot A520 its got 4 megapixels, 4x zoom, 3x digital zoom. It gets the job done, has a ton of features and u can record as much video w/ sound as your card can take. I got a 1GB card.
If you are serious about asking for pictures from this group (I thought you've been here long enough to know better :-D ).
I would plead with you, for that sake of my eyes and sanity, that you not accept and "self - portraits" below the neck, unless the subject if fully clothed.
What wrong ParkingLotFlagDude? You think I don't know this? Im just as sick as the rest of them, plus photography is an artform...its just shapes, contrast and composition...u have to find your third eye or leg if you will.... :paranoid
Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I took these pictures from my front and back porch last spring with my digicam:

Here's a pic from a month or so ago. It was Eagle day at the world bird sanctuary.
Here's an Australian Eagle. The only species to live on the continent.

The other day I was sitting in my underwear drinking beer and watching porn and I heard a massive crash outside of my house. I looked outside and some New England white trash fatass had run his Rent-A-Center truck over the tree that was growing out of our sidewalk, careened through our interection and smashed into a telephone pole across the street from us. Needless to say I grabbed my digi and took pictures of him being carted off on a stretcher and all of the mayhem that he created. Perhaps I'll post them when I get home. They are far from art, but they're rather entertaining.

Cool pics mus. That pic was my dog when we were out hiking. We were climbing a pretty steep hillside and she started to do that dog spaz out thing. She would run around me and then up the hill and around this big boulder figure eight style. I was laughing and I tryed to move the camera to freeze her. I thought this picture captured that spaz out pretty acurately.

Im lucky, I live with my dad right now, hes got 21 acres on land that used to be part of the family farm. its def not rural where i live, but our spot is nice and secluded from it all. secluded enough where i can have big parties, be pretty loud, have fires, shoot clay pigeons not have to worry about the police. oh and we have a drive inn movie theatre for neighbors. its not too bad.

im surprised the ball wasn't blurry...nice shot btw
A lot of cool ass pics in here. I especially enjoyed rjs's. Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I found them funny. :-D
i don't own a digi cam. I might buy one, but then I'd have to learn how to load them into the PC. And I'm not very techincal so I'd probably farg it up.
I even screwed up taking pics at TC last year. I had a ton of good shots with Beermonkey's camera and they didn't take because I didn't push the button all the way down until it beeped.
I did take a lot of good pics one time when the Eagles trained in WC with a regular camera though. I don't know why I'm telling yall this though because it's not like I can show them on here. :-D
Get one. Good to have, and cheap. As far as getting pics into the PC, it's usually as easy as connecting one end of a wire to the PC and the other end to the camera...the computer does the rest.

Yes, a Chocolate English Lab. The English Labs arent' supposed to get as big as a regular Lab, they are shorter.

A little bit of both. We had several tornadoes roll through that night and the house to the left of the one in the shot lost its roof because of one. It wasn't a full-blown tornado, though. I think it's referred to as a microburst?

So far, I really like it. I'm wishing for some more manual focus control, though. And there's no place to attach lens filters, which is a bit of a bummer. I will probably to with a DSLR before too long, but this will work for me for now. The pictures are sharp, and I'm just now starting to figure out a lot of the manual overrides.

Does the camera come with the batteries and/or charger or do you have to purchase that stuff seperately as well. IMO, the batteries and charger along with the memory card is what really made it seem like a pretty good deal.
Also, have you gotten a chance to take any night shots with it yet?

That was one of the things I liked about the camera-- it takes AAs. I bought some rechargables, and they last forever on one charge. And in a pinch, you can replace the AAs anywhere. Battery pack is a pain in the butt.
Oh, and it takes nice, crisp night shots, I think. Here's one I took the first day I got the camera:
rechargeables are your best bet. they do though eventually go bad in time. i bought 2 sets and the two of the 4 don't last as long as they used too. regular batteries get drained so fast compared to rechargeables.
I think I already posted that I got a new scanner and that it scans negatives. Well I saved all my negatives from photo class in high school and scanned a few of them in the other day. Trip down memory lane...

Yep, the fact that it takes AA batteries was a huge plus for me. I already have a few Lithium Ion AAs with a charger, so I didn't need another one. And I tend to by AA batteries in bulk, so I always have some of them around.
I haven't taken any night shots yet. I had it (and a tripod) with me last night, hoping to stop and shoot some after my tai chi class...but nothing caught my eye.
Cool beans with the neg scanner, mussa. :yay
I know there's a few with the S3IS, so I thought I'd share this. I picked this up off of ebay, and I'm pretty happy with it so far. The converter tube/hood is nicer than the plastic Canon version, and the other stuff is pretty good quality. Not a bad way to extend the use of the camera if you have a spare $70 to burn.

It's a bayonet fit-- there's a small button under the lens-- push it and there's a ring that comes off the front of the camera when you align the dots. The adapter fits on the same way. Perfect fit-- nice and tight. And the other lenses/filters thread into that.
Gotcha. Guess I should RTFM... :-[

The guy was using it in the pool, which highlighted that the thing is waterproof to 33 feet. Apparently it doesn't have a really great out-of-water picture quality...but in the water, it's cool. After having to run those disposable underwater cameras through airport security checks (the ones in Mexico force you to put them through the x-ray machine!), I'm almost ready to go all-digital for my underwater pictures.

yea like how often will u be taking pictures underwater? i know some cameras have a case you can put them in for underwater pics...prob cheaper than a whole new camera
Actually, I've wanted to take underwater pics (or at least pics near or in water) at least once a year. Mostly while snorkeling, but also in pools or water parks, too. In a couple of weeks, I'll be heading to Reykjavik, and I know I'm going to want to take pictures while in the geothermally heated pools, or at least very close to the waterfalls there.
A waterproof housing for my newest camera (http://www.leisurepro.com/Prod/IK614003.html) is available, but it costs considerably more than the camera itself. Plus it's big, ugly, and bulky (not easy to pack in luggage).
While traveling in the U.S., it's a trivial issue to ask the airport screeners to hand-check the disposable cameras. They are now ASA 800 speed, and even the relatively low strength x-ray units will cause the film to fog. When trying to leave Mexico, I asked the screener to hand-check the cameras, and she pointed at a sign that said "will not harm photographic film." Yeah, right.

Nice house, though. I wonder how often they get gators in the pool...
Disclosure stuff. I can show exterior photos of houses because they're readily available from numerous public record sources but anything else can get me in a bit of a jam.
PS: No gators. It's on the intracoastal waterway (salt water). I wouldn't stick my toes in it much less go swimming or skiing in it, though.

I was out with a friend and we just found a Kodak digital camera next to a set of stairs. It's operational and kind of debated on whether giving it back or not, but then I looked through it and it seemed some emo flag with combed over blond hair was taking myspace picks and decided free cameras rule.

I'm just messing around with it a bit and it's easily one of the worst digital cameras I have ever seen. Awful quality. Limited options. No sound. Tiny ass screen. I looked it up and brand new it is $45.

I do, and I can't change lenses on that. This is another new camera. I still keep the S3 for times when I need a good, portable, point-and-shoot...but I moved up to a DSLR. The bird photo was taken with a 70-200mm/2.8 lens.

those are some big waves for florida, wow
There are more shark attacks in that spot than anywhere else in the United States. I've surfed it many times and when someone yells "pick up your feet" you damn well pick 'em up. There was a lot of birds feasting on bait fish towards the end of the jetty and where there's bait fish there's sharks. Lots of them.
If you look at the jetty on the left side is the ocean and on the right side is the inlet. When the waves aren't washing over it's a really nice place to hang out with a beach chair and a cooler of beer.
Looks great!
Fun with icy tree.
Looks awesome. Did you muck with exposure, or use a flash on that one? Since it gets darker near the ends, I'm guessing flash. Might be an interesting subject for exposure bracketing.
Thanks.
Actually, I tried a plain long-exposure shot, and it looked flat. I tried flash, and it looked too stark. If I had a couple of external flashes, I'd have used them to light up the branches...but I haven't gotten them yet. So I gave it a 20 second (or so) exposure, and while the shutter was open, I ran around the tree and "painted" it with a flashlight.
The resulting image had a white streak across the bottom of the image, as it captured the flashlight moving across the shot. So I cloned it out in Photoshop, then toyed with the levels to bring the surroundings out a little.
In hindsight, I probably should have gone for a few more seconds of exposure, so that I could hit all the branches, rather than concentrating on the core of the tree. The darker ones are the ones I didn't paint long enough,
Here's one I did similarly. I wanted to get a lighted desk lamp in a sea of black. But the light from the lamp was too bright, and I couldn't get the body of the lamp to look right. So I put a dimmer on the lamp, and then with the shutter open, I painted the lamp with an LED flashlight (I liked the cold blue effect it gave).
I had plenty of black stuff around the shot, but there were still some bits showing up that I didn't want (including the edges of the table that the lamp was on)...so I spent some time posting it with the clone and band-aid tools in Photoshop.
I was reading somewhere online that when you need different light levels, you can use Photoshop to pull two exposures together: take the foreground with a flash & short exposure, then get the background with a long exposure. I'm too lazy for all that :)
What is cool is that the new digital cameras have "auto exposure bracketing" where the camera will take 3 quick pictures at different exposures when you don't have time to set up the shot. I've played with this, but I'm mostly obsessed with taking pictures indoors with no flash. I love my 50mm f/1.4 lens but you have to stand in the next room to take a picture with it because the field of view is so small. I picked up a 17-200mm f/2.8 wide angle but it is still too slow for where I end up taking pictures. I guess I'll have to invest in a flash with a diffuser.
If your digital camera supports the RAW format, there is no reason to ever have your camera create a tif or a jpg file.
You can actually change the exposure on a lossless basis on the fly using the RAW format, it produces amazing results.

I'd rather go through the effort of making the shot right than trying to cobble together a frankenphoto.

Same here. I'd like at least two, so that I can run the flashes from off-axis positions.
BTW, the lamp was taken with a 17-35/2.8 lens. It does pretty well, but I understand what you mean about it never being fast enough.

Ah, now I understand what this is about. It's something called High Dynamic Range (HDR) images.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging
The resulting images look pretty cool. Despite my previous no-frankenphoto stance, I'm going to take a stab at experimenting with that.
Until then, this is my latest light experiment. I thought I'd posted it already, but I didn't see it here, so here it is:

Wow - nice depth of field. Small aperture & long shutter time?
I got a new flash for Christmas - what a huge difference. I was using the zesty on-camera flash or nothing, and that was frustrating the hell out of me. I only have family photos right now, but I'll have to post some comparison shots.
Both. Maybe 2 minutes of exposure, while I walked around the car and fired a flash unit I was carrying.
I just got a Canon flash unit, and it does an excellent job. I'm going to maybe get a 3rd, and maybe a couple of umbrella setups, and try for some portraiture work. :)

Quick, somebody post some filthy whore lie about Camaros being better than Mustangs.
Whores.
Now that I look, I see the highlights on the car. Is that also the source of the 9 bright lights across the top of the picture?
Yep. It was a little tough to get them to space out correctly, being that I was walking on some muddy ground. Plus, on the best shot, I stupidly fired the flash in front of the "one lane bridge" sign. So I cloned the sign, and the darker sky, and a few of the flash points, from a different shot. Gotta love the magic of digital post-production.

Yeah, that was my original idea, but I wanted to get the shot done last night, and I didn't get the plate glass until today. Plus I was trying to emphasize the coldness of the vodka, and I thought that maybe the reflection would detract from that. Maybe.

It's just a foam core board that's black on one side. I used it for the tennis ball, too, but I placed a thing sheet of glass on top to get the reflection set.
Quote
2) What was the back drop for the two pictures (if any)?
I built a small tabletop stand out of 1-inch PVC pipe (and fittings), and draped a piece of black fabric over it. I'll see if I can get a picture of it to show now it's put together. The funny thing is that with normal light, it looks terrible...but with the right lighting and adjustment of the photo after the fact, it becomes pretty much invisible. I also have a larger piece of black fabric that I can tack to the ceiling...but I haven't taken that big of a picture yet.

I've been playing with a trial version of HDR creation software. This is my treatment of a little fly fishing shop in Boiling Springs:
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2013/2193348657_c6de8110d0.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/15107838@N08/2193348657/")
Sky looks supernatural, foreground looks fake...I don't know if it is overexposed or if it is just too sharp.
it looks like a velvet painting
which is to say, awesome
Yeah, it's possible to adjust things to look really surreal. It's a real temptation to overdo the settings...but sometimes it's cool to push the velvet envelope.
One problem I had was with holding the camera still. I was using a monopod, and using a high-speed shutter to take the 3 shots needed for the operation. There is some slight shift in the image(s), and if you look close, it's possible to see an artifact from that. But for a first try, not using a tripod, I'm happy with it.
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2022/2193348663_1103e81dc7.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/15107838@N08/2193348663/")
nice sus, they are nice. i'd def get a tripod if i were you.
Yeah man, you ever heard of one of those things? You should totally get one.
totally
LOL...I have one, muss, but I didn't want to drag it around with me that day. The monopod is good for steadying the heavy camera a little when shutter speeds approach the shaky range (below about 1/60th of a second), and it's collapsible, so it's easy to transport.
I'm going to take a few pic this afternoon (weather permitting), and I packed the tripod into the car this morning...so I'm all set.
you pack that damn tripod and get your ass back out there and take some damn pictures! NOW DAMNIT!

so sus, what exactly are you adjusting when you take these photos into that program? are you selecting the sky and then adjusting the sky and the land parts separate to get that look? is it a filter?
A good title for the trolley shot would be "The Eagles Super Bowl Express".

The program combines the 3 different images automatically, and then I go through a tone mapping process with the same program. I just eyeball all of the adjustments, adding as much or as little change as I think looks good. Personally, I don't like it pushed too far, but I do like a nice, turbulent sky. So that's definitely one thing I'm keeping in mind.
When it's all done, I transfer to Photoshop, do some minor tweaks, size it, and then it's done.
got ya...very cool, i think the sky is my favorite in many
It makes for some interesting results in studio conditions, too.

Love Park was awesome.
Nice picture though.
Meh...it's much better to take pictures without all of those hoodlums skating around. :-D
I do see a bunch of them around the city, and on the Temple campus, though. Too bad the city hasn't come through with a dedicated park for it.
Skaters practically built Love Park up to what it is. People went there to see them. How often do people go there now? My money is a lot less than they used to.
I haven't been there since they closed it down for skating in 2005 or whatever year it was, but I've seen pictures with the new planters and wooden benches and it looks farging ridiculous.
I was living in philly when they changed it and it looked like shtein. My roomate at school jumped the gap at love park into the pond on rollerblades once. it was pretty awesome. course thats when you could do that there. really it doesn't matter to me...if people want to skate they can go to FDR and there are plenty of places to go, but no real offical parks. thats sad in such a large city. really sad
What's really sad about it is that Philly used to host the summer X-games yet they don't have an actual skate park for people to use.

Now that I refresh my slavic letter reading, I can see that. I hadn't dusted that skill off in 2 years.. now, to make the rest of the bottle out..

110 inches of snow and counting so far. 4 75# bags of sand in the back for traction. Tacoma+Blizzard combo worked out way better than I expected. Moves tons of snow.
would of never thought it could move snow like that. hell of a truck
any idea, mussa, how much snow fits in the bed of a Tacoma?
why don't you drill a hole and go farg your cabinets
I was trying to go with a "green" theme with some tabletop work. I also took shots of a Jameson bottle...but I didn't really like the results. Anyway, this was a start:

Actually, it wasn't bad at all on Saturday. I had a somewhat heavy long-sleeved shirt on in the morning, and I got too hot in it. We did a winery tour, and I did just fine in short sleeves and no jacket. Sunday was mixed rain/snow showers, though. Yuck. But all we did then was drive home.

Thanks. This one is done with the HDR process. Set the camera to automatically take three exposures, bracketing by a stop or two, in very rapid succession. Then the images are combined on the computer and adjusted to capture more detail in the exposure range than you can get with just one exposure.
I was pleased with how the sunbeams came out in that one.
Ok, I know absolutely nothing about photography but it sounds like you know what you're doing. Good job.
When are you going to start working with naked chicks?
Good question. Actually, I'm starting with some hopefully almost naked chicks this weekend. It's part of a lighting seminar. I don't think they'll get naked...but a guy can dream.

And it seems fairly normal that some of these models like to get naked. Especially if you pay them. Go figure.

It's not you. I really like the look of her face, and the shape of her jaw...but my closeups really need to be retouched because of that dark hair on her upper lip. I'm a little mad because she probably should have addressed the issue before showing up for a shoot. She had plenty of notice.
Here's another one that I worked on a bit. I might have been a little heavy handed, though.

It's good to see that the trend of ugly ass super models has trickled down into the world of southeastern pennsylvania wannabe skank models. These bitches need to get naked or they've got no future.
Every pick that Sus puts up, i can just see these girls telling friends that they are doing modeling and walking around like they are hot shtein
Russ, you need to rightsize your expectations a little. Supermodels are supermodels because they are the best of the best. It's not realistic to think you're going to get a smoking hot girl for a photographers workshop. It's usually girls who want to get some modeling work, and who are willing to put up with a dozen camera nerds taking pictures of them all day.
And most of them were from the Baltimore area. The best one (Briana, the one in the jean shorts) is from Phoenix. She traveled with the guy who put on the workshop.
Oh, and the naked part...that's definitely possible with certain models. But in this context, it wasn't going to happen. Plus, the ones who want to get naked are actually more unreliable and annoying to work with. Not that I actually know that from experience...but I've been told. :paranoid
Biskit...you couldn't be further from the truth. These models were very nice and easy going. No trace of snobbiness at all.
My expectations begin and end at naked pictures of random girls on the internet.
Understood. Lucky for you there's an endless supply of that.

Quick...let me hurry to post pictures of my credit cards.
i switched from a wallet to a money clip for about a year or so, but now i'm back to a thin wallet. the clip gets annoying after a while whenever you have to take money out or put back in. so every time you need it.
I have a thin case for credit cards, licences, etc, that I keep in one front pocket, and then I have a magnetic money clip that holds cash for easy access in my other front pocket. I like keeping the money separate from the other stuff, and I like not having it in my back pocket...harder to steal.

Wow, that really doesn't look like Die Hard in that pic. Could be partly because dook's wearing a hat the shadow from it is covering half of his face. Plus I'm pretty sure I've been drunk every time I've seen him at a game.
This was early in the day, it was a night game. The highlight came later when he decided to chug a can of peaches or something like that. After downing liquor and beer. And he puked. But at least he didn't leave a little pile next to my truck this time.

Can't see 'em here, because teh werk filters out facebook. Probably can't see 'em at home, because Comcast is currently filtering out everything.
They're nothing compared to the ones you put up, thats for sure. Just some shots from a regular digital cam. But you're missing out on Havas giving the camera the finger.
Finally got my Comcast issue worked out...and now I see them. Pretty cool images. And finger man needs his cap straightened out.
I've got some more Machu Picchu ones that I'll post later. That place is amazing and I think I took like a hundred and sixty pics of it. I'm going back to Peru in a few days but not to MP. I'll get some more shots of Lima and the city life.
There are a billion pics of Machu Picchu, and none of your hot latina doing anal. Get your priorities straight.

I also got a small extension tube, which lets a regular lens do some macro-range focusing. I'm not sure which shots I used it on, though. Maybe the second and third.
This one was done without the tube:

Well I'm no botanist but the ones in the back look like cattails and the ones in the front look like sticker bushes.

I think the only way you can do it is if you "right click/save as" on each individual pic. Shutterfly is a hot steamy pile of poo. I don't exactly know why imagestation changed over to shutterfly, but imagestation was 10x better. I think I deleted my account with them within a week or so after the change over.
Save As will not get the full resolution pic. The only to get a full res pic back is to order a CD/DVD from them.

I do use yahoo for certain things, like email. But I don't know what that would have to do with anything. A while back when imagestation was getting ready to go away, I logged on one day and and was prompted to create a shutterfly account and all of my images were automatically transferred. After navigating around the site for a couple days, I decided to delete the account.
I like photobucket much more than those two
Only reason I don't use photobucket is because the gubment blocked it at work. I have no idea why, but they did.
I use verizon/yahoo for my server, and it automatically chanced from imagestation to fliker. Don't know why. I know that you used imagestation, thats why I assumed you'd automatically get changed over to fliker.
One thing I like about fliker is the downloads are faster and you can get different size pics that don't distort and have the url right there for you to grab.

Ugh. Your photography is on a much better level than the skank in that photo.
i just love the involving of skanks in the pics
Well, I can't control who gets into these things. Some of them are good, many of them are not so good. At every event I've been to, I find myself shaking my head about some of them. It's kid of like watching the early episodes of American Idol, where the "singer" obviously has never heard themselves, so they only think they are a good singer. I've seen some models and wondered what the hell they actually think when they look at themselves.
In all seriousness, though...Madison Avenue models are probably doing this stuff for real money in a major metro area somewhere. The ones I get to shoot are usually "working" for free, or for the chance to get some decent photos in their portfolio, with the hope of being discovered or something.
Im starting up a porno biz, i could give them work, but they'd have to start on the casting couch before they get in movies.

The 700 level board probably lets you post imaged without them looking like filename.jpg. Look at the Snapfish URL and notice that it doesn't end in with a three-letter extention. This board software seems to have that requirement. I'm not sure why, or if it's a good or bad thing, but that seems to be the explanation.

I've been playing with some Photoshop techniques, and the results have been interesting.
First, a pretty basic portrait shot that I took at a recent meetup:
The event was in a Civil War era house, and we had a costumer bring some period clothing. I thought it would be fun to manipulate some of the images to appear as though they were taken way back then. It's not perfect, but I think I captured the right feel:
And here is something completely different. I've been checking out a process that makes very large or distant shots look as though they were actually miniatures. It involves adjust areas of blur and focus, as well as tweaking some of the color tones in the image. Just for fun, I went back to an old shot that I'd taken at an Eagles game, and apply the technique.
nice photochop on the antique photo.
and of all the pics from eagles games you could have used, you had to go with one from the titans game when mcnabb tore his acl and pacman jones had yet to make it rain.
Yeah, I also have some shots of McNabb on the cart, and I thought about using it. But I figured actual football action might be better.
im lovin that tilt-shift eagles pic, Sus. Thats the first time i've seen it used in football so far. would be great to see some more of those if you have the time.

Dudes that flew ended up paying an extra 120 for their trip. That's a night at the 1/2 tables for me. No thanks.
Flying is the only thing I fear, besides giant spiders.
It wasn't bad, and I got to see a lot of the country I wouldn't have seen otherwise, since I really have no desire to ever go to St Louis, Denver, Rocky Mountains, etc.
how white trashy can you get?
an extra 120 bucks on a vacation to get there in 3 hours or riding on a friggin bus for a day and a half. what a tough call. and lol @ 120 bucks being a night of gambling. you are such a tool.

You're probably a terrible poker player, and therefore have no idea how to turn 120 dollars into an entire night at the 1/2 table.
I prefer buying in for the max, but if all I had was 120, I'd do it.
i dont play poker in casinos. that may change come saturday but i stick to blackjack. and there a roughly 0% chance you actually went to vegas though the bus story is at least somewhat believable.
Blackjack at a casino. Idiot.
But yeah, you're right. I'm a professional photoshopper and I'm gonna doctor some photos up just to please some loser jewbag who thinks he's some hip non-MA city boy because he grew up watching his sister get farged by black guys instead of doing the farging himself.
For being from a coolpix digicam and inside a window, the scenery shots didn't turn out half bad. Wish I was working with the lenses that Sus and Mussa have.

Sadly, I did not see NPH anywhere around.
who did you steal those pics from
My facebook. Who do you think that handsome devil is with the jew nose drinking the giant beer?
The idiot that rode a bus from the east coast to Vegas? Didn't save the brown paper bag....looked to trashy?
i beleive the only picture that you actually took is the one of white castle.
I just got jumpy at the thought of sitting ona bus to Vegas from the East Coast....
I couldn't do it. I hate driving or riding with someone for that long let alone on a bus with some seedy characters.
Flying is easy, Munson...just drug yourself and you'll be fine
It wasn't too bad, the worst part was sleeping in the small ass seats....other then that, I had my own (two)seat(s) pretty much the whole time and got to see a lot of the country I wouldn't have seen otherwise. Long drives don't really bother me though....Especially since I bought along World War Z with me to read, which was excellent.
Next time I go, I'm thinking train or plane if I have to...the drug idea was one I thought about this time around, but I figured farg it, save the extra 100 bucks and take the long way.

no talking...I degrade you and you listen...its always been that way

You are correct...and yes! It's from Cacia's Bakery (http://www.caciabakery.com/products.cfm/cat/2/itm/50.htm)
i probably haven't had tomato pie since my last eagles home game which i believe was in 07 and i was probably too drunk to remember eating it.

That is a cool story about them using your pics, Sus. Have you thought about doing that part time and making extra bank from your work?
After hearing what wedding photogs charge, I'm sure you could make a nice little side roll doing a wedding or two every couple months.
Weddings are hard. Not to say Sus couldn't do it. But typically its more than a one person job and you gotta have all kinds of equipment. very high pressure as well. id never want to do them if i was a professional.
Yeah, I've done weddings for family, and it's a LOT of pressure. And you have to think about liability, bridezillas, and stuff like that. Not a fun deal. Sure, it can pay the bills, which makes it almost worth the effort.
Product photography is where the bread and butter is at. Hook up with a company what wants to show off their stuff in a catalog or annual report, and you can make a decent living. Top it with some portraits of CEOs and the like, and you're set.
For now, I'm happy to work for beer.
Yeah, my buddy told me that his wedding photog charged them 2500. I almost choked when he said that. Good luck with this, you take really nice shots. :yay
That's about right. I think I dropped about $2K for my daughter's wedding shots, and I was glad to do it. I have a buddy who shoots on contract with a local photography outfit, and he makes pretty decent scratch, in the neighborhood of $500 for the day's work. And he doesn't have to worry about dealing with all the business. He shows up, takes the photos, and hands 'em over to the company. If nothing else, it helps buy him some nice gear.
That sounds like a pretty sweet deal.
Hell, and the company is making a nice profit for just processing them, dealing with the customer and contracting him out. A 1000-2000 profit is nice.
Yeah not only all the time u put in at the wedding shooting. then you have to go back and edit all the good photos and then any retouching and photoshop work. that all takes time, and time is money. its not cheap. most people don't realize that at all.

Mrs. Yeti wants to take some good pics of the deer that come up to our farm every night. They are about 100 yards away. She wants to buy a digital camera for under $200. I told her she will have to spend twice that to get a decent camera. Are there any decent "wildlife" cameras for under $200?
No.
From that distance you need a 500 dollar camera and a 1000 dollar lens.
And a threesome with a midget.
At least.
Thanks,
This is what I am going to get her. Any comments?

I bought one 5 years ago, great camera, I still use it.
At the distances you're talking about, a tripod would be a smart addition.
Or skip the tripod and the fancy lens...shoot the deer dead with a gun and then get all the close up pics you want.
F'n deer.

Thank you, I'm here all week.
The wifey picked me up a Canon T3i for my birthday..I've been playing around w it for the past few hours and its pretty sweet, but I have no idea what I'm doing..anyone know of a good site to learn how to use this thing?
Are you looking more for how to use that particular camera, or for technique info? If it's the latter, a place like about.com (http://photography.about.com/) is a decent place to start.
There are quite a few blogs and forums I can point you to, as well.
definitely both..I've toyed around w photography with a cheap digitals long enough, time to step up my game. I'm all ears.
Sounds good. First, that about.com site is pretty good for giving the basics with regard to technique, and it has a small forum (but the format of the forum sucks).
Here are a couple of other forums:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/
http://forums.mycanikon.com/
A couple of good books:
Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure (http://amzn.com/0817439390) is pretty good at starting basic and progressing at a good pace.
Scott Kelby's Digital Photography (http://amzn.com/0321604032) gets very high marks, but I haven't read that one yet.
There's also a nice list of books recommended by users on the Photography on the Net site. Link (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=53846)
And here are some decent blogs:

QuoteAn unexpected side-effect of the 2010 flooding in parts of Sindh, Pakistan, was that millions of spiders climbed up into the trees to escape the rising flood waters; because of the scale of the flooding and the fact that the water took so long to recede, many trees became cocooned in spiders webs. People in the area had never seen this phenomenon before, but they also reported that there were less mosquitos than they would have expected, given the amount of standing water that was left. Not being bitten by mosquitoes was one small blessing for people that had lost everything in the floods. (© Russell Watkins)

Not that I know anything about photography, but this slide show has some nice shots.
Some things I found interesting were how Hasselbeck grips a football, how the 49ers DT tackling Kolb fastens his helmet, how Jake Long needs to hold his fingers on and how he is looking at Ware like a cobra sizing up a rat. And damn, Bobbie Williams has turned into a pretty decent lineman since leaving the Eagles but he looks like swallowed a car. Hope Dawk's OK.

If I'm using the "active" mode, should I set it to take multiple shots in a row? Def got a little blur in some of the pictures I took with that active mode on, but also think that's partially because I was snapping pictures quickly and not really making sure I was focusing on the objects in the picture.
I rarely use any of the auto modes other than aperture or shutter priority. I'm assuming that "active" mode puts priority on faster shutter speeds, which will probably give you less motion blur. It's hard to tell what happened with your shots, though.
Consider your focus points. You should be able to change and select certain points, and then use the "focus and recompose" method (press halfway on the shutter button to lock in a focus point, then move the camera to the desired composition).
It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
What lenses did you get with the camera?

Yeah the 'active' mode is supposed to be for when you're taking pictures of sports or something like that, to get rid of the blur. It was only later I thought "wait, shouldn't it be taking like 3 or 4 rapid fire pictures?"...that's what I wasn't sure of. I'm brand new to the camera thing and know only what I read about in the manual/some internet stuff.
I'm assuming and hoping the reason for the blur in some of the pictures was just because I was kinda snapping pics fast and wasn't really focusing as i took, mainly because the dogs were running so fast haha.
The package came with an 18-55mm lense (which seems like the "standard") and a 70-300, which I haven't attempted to use yet. I've mostly just taken a few pictures of trees and shtein and tried playing around with some of the 'effects' of the camera. These are a little bit compressed because I sent them to my phone first instead of directly uploading them to my computer:

The leaves in the last picture are actually all yellow, I just tooled around with one of the settings to get it to look like that.
Yeah, that last one is a little over saturated...but otherwise you're getting some good colors in there. Is the 70-300 a VR (image stabilizing) lens?
I sorely need to get my camera back out of the bag. I've been really, really slacking off with the shooting lately. I did some concert shooting this summer, but that's it. I'm itching to do some studio stuff. Maybe once football is finally over and the weather turns to crap, I can justify spending a few days working on some still life images.
I would like to order some actual printed photographs. How does one do such a thing anymore? The cheapo site I was using apparently doesn't do prints anymore. Are there better options than Snapfish and the like?

You could probably do it at Walgreens. Online, I used art.com (http://art.com) to have some of the pics I took in China printed and delivered in a frame.
Yeah I think Wallgreens a few others do some of the usual sized prints...I used Target.com for a picture I wanted a bigger version of.
You can go to CVS or order from them online. I had my passport photo done by them 6 months ago and there was a person there picking up their photos.

Sorry I missed this. Where did you end up going?
A lot of pros actually use Costco. And in a pinch, Walmart isn't terrible. Otherwise, places like bayphoto.com and mpix.com do a good job, with a nice variety of products in addition to prints being available.
Two other places that I've used are Miller's Professional Imaging and White House Custom Color. But they tend to sell only in the B2B area, marketing their stuff to professional photographers, and they may require setting up a profile and/or account.
i use costco all the time.....its so cheap
In New Hampshire this past weekend/week, took the camera with me. The 70-300mm lens apparently is not a VR lens @Sus, as I got some visible blur on really zoomed in shots (or, atleast, if I zoomed in on the camera later on after taking the picture). But a few of the pictures turned out real well.

The bears were hardest to get a good picture of, they move out of there fast as soon as they realize there's people around.
The Timber rattler was a little terrifying to take a picture of.
If you find yourself in the area, or want a cool day trip in the mid atlantic area, the exhibit of Robert DeGast's photography at the Chesapeake Maritime Museum in St. Michaeis Maryland is excellent.

A quick google search says that's not too far from the town of Oxford, which my great grandfather was the mayor/postmaster/etc of. We go down and visit every once in a while since my grandmother is buried there, might go check that place out next time we go. I've never been big into photography but getting a decent camera has definitely gotten me more into it.
Nice pics.
Munson: that exhibit runs for another nine months or so. The rest of the museum is very interesting as well. They've got Frederick Douglass' sister's house there, among other things. I highly recommend it. The town itself is cute, but touristy, plenty of restaurants and cafes, etc.
Ah, Frederick Douglass...he's a nice fellow. Solid dude.
Dio that sounds a bit like how Oxford is these days. Cute touristy town with places to eat and what not. But it still has a lot of old school charm feel to it too, I think.
Some Moose and Elk pics from RMNP. The Moose were a little hard to get great pictures of because they weren't still for very long and were a decent distance away from me, so some of the brush between me and them would mess with my 300mm lense.

We saw these two right outside of Baxter State Park in Maine. Picture isn't the best quality but it was my first trip using my new superzoom lense and this isn't too bad for being 350-400 yards away and elevated in a tree, and looking almost directly into the sun.
I have to get a light filter for this lens.
I do not think they knew that they were Super Bowl champions.
Screw the quality, I think that's a great pic and I'm stealing it for a screen saver. I like the fact that all you really see are the silhouettes and with both heads turned to the side it looks cool.
Yeah it was a pretty cool picture, I'm just into getting as much detail as possible and I'm still figuring all this out as I go haha.
This is the original image before I zoomed in on the camera and cropped it:

We did a road trip around the country this summer, started going through pictures I took on the camera. A couple shots from the Tetons and Badlands/Black Hills:

Olympic National Park....TONS of wildlife here. I saw more bald eagles here in roughly a one day span than the rest of my life combined (not counting zoos). We saw two coyotes on Hurricane Ridge, on a hill across from the parking lot, and another one when we back country hiked/camped to the wilderness coast of Olympic. We camped on the furthest western point in the US, Cape Alava, where the beach pictures are from. Also saw a ton of seals on the rocks out in the water.

First attempts at some editing using a free trial of lightroom...I've lightly edited in the Nikon uploading app, stuff like sharpening and increasing the saturation, and on these two pictures I think I posted those edited ones in that app before....but never did this before with some of the more in depth tools so not sure if it's overdone or if it's even what I was going for. But I wanted the color to pop more. The first two are edited, the next two are the originals:
