I know vigy is mad for hip-hop and Philly sports merchandise.  shore is into Hot Wheels cars.  SD probably collects Star Wars crap.

I don't collect anything.  Never got into the mentality of it.  What about you?

It's true that I collected comics as a kid.  Sold 'em all to my brother in high school for money to buy cigarettes and drugs.

that is incredibly accurate

I collect collections.

And, Dio, don't you collect music?
Title: Re: Are you a collector?
Post by: Diomedes on January 24, 2007, 09:14:56 PM
Well, I don't think so.  I do have a lot of music, but not for collecting it per se.  It's for listening.  It's all digital, not vinyl or cds.  I don't seek out rare things, etc.  I don't display it, I don't know how much any of it is worth (if indeed it has any value at all).

So I'd say no.  I don't collect music.

Anything I have that could be considered a collection gets used, so no. Especially the trains around Christmas.

But I clicked yes anyway.

I'm at a crossroads with my sports card collection (mostly baseball).  I've been collecting for 30 years, and I have probably over 25,000 of them (1920s-2007).

The thing is, I store them in our 3rd bedroom (of a 3-bedroom house).  That bedroom is going to be claimed very soon by our soon-to-be girl.

Our house has very little in terms of storage, especially for a large collection.  So my choices are:

1.  Create some storage space (i.e. new shelving in our laundry room).
2.  Somehow get some storage space in the house (can't afford to add on - we did that to add a family room a few years ago).
3.  Sell the collection.

Eh, I keep bouncing from option to option.  :-\

Those train collector people get CRAZY over it.  I mean, CRAZY.  The whole basement turned into a scaled replica of a train depot.  Thousands and tens of thousands of dollars sunk into that hobby.

Is collecting a hobby, or is there a difference between the two?

If there is any, it's probably something like this:

- A collection is something you spend a fair amount money on.
- A hobby  is something you spend a fair amount of time on.

And, using this definition, something could easily be both.

I wouldn't say I'm a collector but I do have toys from my childhood that I keep around because they're worth something.

I used to collect Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and Football cards, they're locked away in my closet somewhere and not nearly worth what they were when I bought them. I also collect DVDs, have roughly 300-400. Have about 50 jerseys from the 4 major Philly sports teams, I just can't throw them out.

There's two kinds of those guys. Collectors and operators. Collectors, naturally, want shtein in the original box, never run it, and keep it carefully packed away in a wine rack. Operators will buy any rusted up piece of shtein, all scratched to hell, and run it.

To get really into it, and I know you're still reading, there's two kinds of operators. The tinplate guys and the scale guys. Scale guys go in for realistic shtein. Tinplate guys will run any stamped metal toys with the newer highly detailed stuff. Or just the older stuff. Probably with Plasticville buildings all over the place.

So, yeah. Tens of thousands of dollars sunk into a hobby. But when they die, the wife/kids can auction it off and have a nice chunk of change to buy hats with.

Like I said, I collect collections:

- I have over 2,000 autographed items (also a hobby, as I get them myself rather than buying them outright).
- Dozens of old magazines and newspapers, mostly sports.
- An old atari with about 50 games, and an old C-64
- 300 or so CDs.
- About 40 hats (and I rarely wear hats anymore)
- 30+ bobbleheads
- old schedules
- tickets

I collect beers from whereever we travel.  Every Carribean island has its own beer and rum so i have a pretty good collection.  I used to collect CD's but my wife made me stop 3 years into dating realizing i was spending 40bucks on average a week buying CDs and maybe another 40 on DVDs

I enjoy muscle cars from the 60s and 70s. Of the five I have, two are total basket cases, one is unrestored, but is in great shape, and I run it hard, and the last two are fully frame off restored, that my father and I completed. Not sure if this makes me a collector, or just an enthusiast.

Also, I collect beer. When I was in the service I would get at least one beer from each country. Since then I will grab one if I see it for sale, but I don't seek out kinds that I don't have. I have maybe 30-40 different kinds which I display in the garage.

Finally, fishing reels. These I am probably a little nuts over. Since I was a kid I've fished on the Jersey shore, as have my parents and parents before them. Most people wouldn't know it, but some reels (the rods normally rot away, or break), have a lot of value. I was given a set of Penn reels that my great grandfather used, and restored them to like new, and keep them pretty safe. Probably have 20 old fashioned fishing reels.

As a kid I collected football and baseball cards. And I even got back into it in my early 20's. Not so much anymore, in fact, about a year ago, i went and threw a bunch of them away. And by a "bunch" I mean a couple of thousand.

I do collect Star Wars memorabilia, but I am not nuts about it. I have a few highly valuable items in that collection. The best one being a "Revenge of the Jedi" original movie poster and actual Trailer Reel that I got when a movie theater closed down near me as a kid.

I have a shot-glass and beer stein collection too.

Currently, I have a collection of sports pennents for decorating my basement, which can only fit into 3 categories... Current Eagles Stuff, Vintage other philly teams. And (my favorite) defunct sports franchises...of which I have

"Philadelphia Stars Championship"
"Baltimore Stars Championship"
"Philadelphia Athletics"
"Philadelphia Atoms" (soccer)
"Philadelphia Bell"
"Philadelphia Blazers" (hockey)
"Philadelphia Warriors"
"St Louis Browns"
"Baltimore Colts"
"New Orleans Jazz"

The unrestored "fun" car is a 70 Buick GS 455, it has some tiny spots of rust, the interior is worn, but it runs like a raped ape. The basket cases: a 69 Buick GS 400 Convertible, and my next project when I get to it is a 68 Dodge Dart GTS. The two restored cars are a 56 T-Bird, and a 67 Mustang Fastback.

Yeah, I collect Hot Wheels, a lot of other types of die-cast cars, plastic model kits, comic books, American Flyer S gauge electric trains, and anything Batman or Spiderman.

My favorite die-cast and models.

The die-cast were carefully removed from the box and the box is in storage. If you want any collectable to be worth anything, it has to have the original box like Dio said.

This American Flyer train from my childhood is the last one made by the company before it went bankrupt. Hence, it is the most rare, and a mint set with all the boxes recently sold on e-bay for over $3,000.00

As everyone already knows, I love the George Barris Batmobile. Who can't love a car that does this?

PhillyfaninDC has quite a collection. It must be great to be able to do what he does. I'd love to get my hands on a '71' Cuda. Had a 340 Challenger, yellow with the black fade strip on the side and a black vinyl top, when I was in my twenties. I totaled that thing. Ahhhhhhhhh, maybe when my kids are gone and married.

:-D The Peoria Gateway in the pic is the only one I have that is not a runner. I work on 'em and run 'em all the time. I don't spend thousands on them though. I don't have that kind of cash. I have all of my old ones and have bought a few on e-bay, but not anything for over a hundred bucks or so. Some of those damn things go for over 500, and into the thousands.

There's a few shops around everywhere that have a little bit of S gauge stuff. And there's usually a show once a month.

I'll stick with my O gauge stuff. Sidings and crossovers that don't need crazy-ass wiring. :)
Title: Re: Are you a collector?

Lots of sports stuff.  Eagles jerseys, Phillies programs, (I have every year from 1964 on...) and I also collect ticket stubs from concerts & sporting events I've been to.  I have a collage of tickets framed in my office from about 1979 through a couple of years ago.  I'm pretty close to having enough now to frame another one.

I also have a collection of first edition books that my father passed down to me when he died.

I also have a decent collection of watches.

My brother has a collection of LP's that would be the envy of any serious collector in the world.  He has some of the rarest stuff I've ever seen.  In all, I'd say he probably has 5,000 albums, many of which are first pressings from the 1960's and a jazz collection that is jaw dropping.   I can't stand the douchebag but I admire his taste in music, that's for sure.

They started off with 1, 2, and 3 gauge trains. 2 and 3 faded out. They came out with 0 gauge. 1 became standard gauge, and the 0 became "oh." A C Gilbert came out with the American Flyer stuff, which is S gauge. Smaller than O. There's also L (larger than O), N (nine milimeters between the tracks, since most languages have an N to start the number nine) and Z (a circle of that can be laid down on the brim of a derby - yeah, I don't know either).

Thanks MURP. When I was a kid, I had the big 1/16th scale gave to me for my birthday. It was cool as anything, but I have no ideal what happened to it. It's hard to find now, I haven't seen any complete mib models. All I have seen are half put together ones.

As for the size of model trains, I know this much,  S scale is 1/64 prototype size, compared with 1/48 for O scale and 1/87 for HO. I don't know about the other scales. GF probably knows for shore, but I think that O scale is the most popular, with Lionel being the biggest brand out there.

i consider myself a music collector. my grandma bought me the hess trucks from when i was a kid up until not too long ago for x-mas. so i have everyone, pretty much in mint condition back til 1980. i never looked into what they were worth, so i'm not a collector of them, they were given to me. other than that, i like to find cigar stuff, old school tin signs or boxes.  some random other antiques.

My mom started buying me the Hess trucks each year for x-mas about 10 years ago.  Why?  I have no idea.  But they're pretty cool so I roll with it.  I've got them set up in a nice curio cabinet and they usually get a lot of attention/compliments whenever I have guests over.

maybe I just made this up in my head, but I think ebay destroyed the value of a lot of things.  Since anyone can sell anything to anyone in the world things are not hard to find.  I remember back in the day the local baseball card shop or one of the baseball card shows at the Mall were the only way to score some rare cards.  Now you can just go on ebay during lunch break and find any card you want and have it in a few days.

Same goes for the HESS trucks and a lot of other stuff.

Im sure there are a lot of collectable things worth loot, but it seems like the availablity of things has driven prices down.  Supply and demand.

Im sure there are a lot of collectable things worth loot, but it seems like the availablity of things has driven prices down.  Supply and demand.

I know that for sports cards, that is pretty much true.  Heck, the two sports card shops that were in Naples have closed.  There is one that opened last year, but it sucks.

I think there's a hint of truth in there but it's not entirely accurate.  In fact, you could say it may do the exact opposite and drive the price up.  Using sports cards for example, we were all limited to the local card shop down the street  or the occasional card show when we were growing up.  So let's say that the local shop had the Ty Cobb tobacco card that is the crown jewel of baseball cards.  Every week you'd go in that shop and every week it would be there.  Why?  Because no one in my neighborhood (or yours most likely) could afford the high price tag that it came with.  But everyone around the country at least heard about the card.  But not everyone knew where to find it.

Enter ebay and now you've got people from all over the country/world bidding on something.   Chances are, especially if the item you are auctioning is truly rare, that the final sale price will exceed the "book value" of whatever you're selling.

When the card is sitting on display in a local shop it is mostly just available to people who can't afford it.  But when it's on ebay, it's available to people who can not only afford it, but who can afford to overpay.

possibly.

I just think there seem to be more sellers than buyers in many areas.   For example, I have some comic books I was thinking about getting rid of.  I saw that they may be worth x amount of dollars.   I go on ebay and see about 20 other people trying to sell the same comic book and only a few people bidding on em.

I could be wrong, because there are infinite collectors items and I have no idea what the supply/demand is on most of em.

But it goes with the old saying,  something is only worth what someone else will pay for it.

I think it just depends on the specific item and how rare it actually is.  Your comic books may fetch you more money in the local market because they may be rare in the Philly area but not so much on a national level.

Anything from the 90s on up isn't worth much. People starting seriously collecting everything then, so there's nothing rare to find. Hess trucks are still worth a lot, especially if they're in like new condition with the box.

ebay has destroyed the collectable market, in the manner that MURP guesses/describes.

nothing is "rare" anymore.

Speaking of collectables, I was considering putting some old school autographed Eagles cards up on Ebay.  Is there a better place to sell them?  I don't want some douche from Dallas ending up with me treasures.

If they are treasures, why are you selling them? If your selling them, why do you care who gets them?

The Hot Wheels 1/18 1966 batmobile.
Regular        $18.99
Elite             $84.99
Super Elite   $279.99

These bitches aren't making it to the shelves of any stores I can find. I already pre-ordered the regular one, and I'm reluctant to pre-order any other model. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know any place that has the last two models in stock?? I know that the reg. ones are on e-bay in stock, but they are over priced, as are the other two types that are available for pre-order only.

Man, I had no idea that these things would be so hard to get.

I just picked this up on E-bay. It's lovely. I believe it's Victorian.

I have had a really hard time find the ceramic sets. Does anyone know if there is a better place to look? Gosh.

Also, I have been collecting a lot of naked fat women eating. Here is the pride of my collection to date:
