If the Eagles gave up this years entire draft and next years 1st overall it would still be substantially less than what the Skins gave up to get RG3. Luck is also the safer pick with more upside. You can defend the Skins for taking a chance but common sense says this is a typical big offseason splash move from Danny boy to lure his fans back to drinking the Kool-Aid. Manning told them hell no so he had to do something. There was no other big move to make and they had to outbid Cleveland. Bottom line is they overpaid like a motherfarger. The Giants only gave up [using igy logic] a 3rd a future 1st and a 5th for Eli and they were moving up the same amount of spots.

Vick is a franchise quarterback.  Is he preferable to say, Drew Brees?  No.  But he's still a franchise guy.

And since when is pointing out giving up three #1's and a #2 for a single draft pick "homerism"?  I know it is in Binary IGYworld, but not anywhere else, right?

ice grillin you

you are overthinking this...who gives a rats ass what the giants gave up...every year is different....the number 2 this year was as coveted a pick as theres been in a long long time....competition drives the price up

but who cares what the price was....if this guy is a franchise qb do you really think the skins will care in two years that they dont have a first round pick?

if the eagles had gotten rgiii yesterday id be the happiest ive been in sports since the phillies world series and it wouldnt even be close

at least it gives you hope and a future to look forward to....and thats something the eagles dont have right now

i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

Yes I think the Skins will care the next two seasons when they don't have 1st round picks. They have cap space but they have so many holes, meaning they can add free agents which will cost money but the cheapest and most effective way to build a team is through the draft.

So what you're saying is the Skins have a brighter future because they traded away a bunch of picks for a guy who hasn't taken a snap yet? That's gold even from you. I'll put a 100 wager right now that the Eagles have a better w/l record than the skins in the next 3-5 seasons. You can pick the years whether it be 3, 4, or 5 years. By then we'll know what this trade meant. My guess is the Skins are their typical selves signing old overpriced f/a's and shipping picks off for scrap.

Rome

The Skins have no legit receivers, their running backs are a joke, their offensive line is mediocre and they'll have a rookie quarterback to lead them (if he even starts, that is).

Again, Danny is going full bore into free agency again because he has no other choice.  It's been his M.O. since he got to Washington, and that's fine.  It's worked so well in the past, amirite!?!

They'll rue the day they made this deal.  It's been proven again and again that when you give up this much to get one guy, it sets you back.

Diomedes

It most certainly has not been proven that when you give up this much, it sets you back, because with the exception of one or two deals, no one has ever given this much up.

The most recent blockbuster trade to which this might be best compared is of course Eli and Rivers...and although the Giants did not give up as much for Manning as the taterskins are doing for Griffin, it could hardly be argued that they over paid for him.  For two Super Bowl wins, they could have given up six first rounders and it would have been worth it.

Ricky Williams, Herschel Walker, Ryan Leaf, Roy Williams... do those names ring a bell, Dio?

QB Eagles

If the Skins were a team like the Jets, being held back more or less solely by the limitations of their QB, I think the picks would be clearly worth it. The Skins don't strike me as a team where you can slot in a top QB and expect instant success, though. Will Danny be able to build a serious team around him as the years pass?

RGIII looks like a tremendous talent to me, but if you look at the history of top 10-pick "can't miss" QBs in the draft, there's a lot of NFL mediocrity. As an Eagle fan I have to admit I am bothered about the Skins getting a potential legitimate QB, but I'm also excited about the possibility of them Jamarcus-ing their team for the next 5 years.

Diomedes

The only deal in that list that compares is the Walker deal, and obviously that didn't work out for Minnesota, but it sure as hell did for Dallas.  If your point is that big deals often fail, sure, they often do.  But sometime it works out.  Put the Eli deal in your list and you have five trades, with one of them netting 2 rings.  That's a one in five shot of getting wild success.

If RGIII wins even one Super Bowl for the skins, the deal will have been worth it.  I get that you want to shtein all over it, but I'm not convinced it's an idiotic move.

In seven years when they cut him loose you can point and laugh at me for holding my fire in the early days.

Rome

So it worked out for the team that got the shteinload of picks but not for the team that gave them up.

You've convinced me.  I'm wrong.

And I don't think it's idiotic by any stretch of the imagination.  I think RG III is going to be a phenomenal player.  All I'm saying is giving up that sort of bounty is the sort of move that has catastrophe written all over it.

Diomedes

Well it's either a catastrophe, or an all-time triumph.

We'll see.

Either way, the f'n Eagles still don't have a Lombardi.  Not even one.

lol at the rampant eagles homerism less than a year after the eagles had one of the biggest player acquisition offseason flops in history that everyone went puff their chest out bonkers at the time (i was also 100% in favor of it)

rgiii might suck rgiii might go to the hof...we dont know...but ill take the power move to try and get a franchise qb for the next 15 years anytime over doing nothing...shtein im on record as saying id give this years entire draft plus next years 1 for luck....a couple ones for rgiii seems perfectly reasonble

I actually agree with this.  If you go back to the 98 draft, the Chargers swapped 1st round picks with Arizona and gave them a 2nd rounder in 98 and 1st rounder in 99 (which turned out to be a high pick for the Cards because Leaf and the Chargers were terrible in 98).  Oh, and they also gave up Eric Metcalf who was the best return specialist in the game.  And the Chargers gave all of that up so they could move 1 spot from #3 to #2 in the draft.  So yeah, the trade itself to move up 4 spots in the draft to get a talent like RGIII isn't a horrible decision.  I just hate the fact that the Skins are getting a player that I want to root for in the league.

I wish the Skins would sign Manning to a 3 or 4 yr deal so that they might be inclined to pass on RGIII but I know that's not going to happen.

Drunkmasterflex

The skins gave up a lot, but if the kid is a legit franchise QB it won't matter in the long run.  I would be happy if I was a Skins fan right now.

the thing is that the taterskins are incompetent, that by them targeting RGIII it proves to me he will be awful.  i look forward to him being Akili Smith
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

It is also funny that one of the few areas that they haven't been incompetent recently is in their high draft picks, when they've actually had them.
