A lot of people on NFL Radio this week were talking about him as a first rounder. At this point in the draft its a good pick.

STRENGTHS Curry is quick off the ball when he is focused on rushing the passer,
WEAKNESSES Curry can struggle at times and look out-of-place in the run game.

Shame that he's from Jersey instead of a southern state. Washburn only got to half mast over him.

Yeah I didn't see any Marshall games this year...so I don't know much about him. But Mayock and Tim Ryan/Pat Kirwan were real high on him

QuoteNFL Draft 2012: Mike Mayocks Final Positional Rankings - Defense

Ok - on to the defensive side of the ball. Mike Mayock's final positional rankings came out on Tuesday, and was followed by the twitters going bonkers last night because of all this Chandler Jones hype, which I addressed earlier this morning. Apart from that, nothing too shocking is included below. Let's see how the final rankings fell.

Defensive End

1. Chandler Jones, Syracuse
2. Quinton Coples, North Carolina
3. Courtney Upshaw, Alabama
4. Vinny Curry, Marshall
5. Bruce Irvin, West Virginia

So they got a guy that is a good pass rusher but not so good against the run and weak at the point of attack. He can spell Babin, maybe on passing downs. Cool.

I would have preferred a CB but don't really hate this pick. He can line up at both end spots which is convenient.

So DRC, Curry + for Kolb. Seems fair.

wide nine is all about the line getting up the field and after the qb and the linebackers filling and making tackles

this offseason theyve added two get after the qb guys in cox and curry and two tackling linebackers in meek and kendricks

not saying its going to all pan out but its 100% true to the formula

he is but he cant play the slot

boykin is the best slot corner in the draft...problem is thats all he can do...that and his size is why i thought hed drop to the third...the question is does he make it to 88

That much is obvious, but you still need DEs that can stop the run since they are responsible for the edge, not the LBs, which is one reason why Cole is overall probably a top 3 4-3 DE.

I don't hate the pick but I would have rather seen 2 or 3 other needs addressed first, and if they go DE get a guy who can play the run to spell Babin or Cole on run downs. Especially now with Cox, they have enough fastballz.
Title: Re: Vinny Curry, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on April 27, 2012, 10:22:46 PM
im not disagreeing with you but if thats what you want then you dont want them to run the wide nine....this deep into the draft you arent going to get an edge rusher who can also play the run....if they could clearly they and everyone else would take one...but when you run the wide nine you take the guy who can get to the qb best

agreed on killa...he can do it but its normally not going to happen where you can get a guy like him in the third round or deeper....which is why he is one of their best defensive picks of the last ten years

been watchin him a lot this morning and he should change his name to darryl victor parker graham III

i will say there more hope with him just because if washburn is half as much of the god like figure people say he is that maybe curry can be coached up more than their past DE picks were

pretty god damn farging cool....

Quote
As Brian Dawkins spoke so eloquently and emotionally Saturday morning about his remarkable career and his place in Eagles history, a 23-year-old kid sat silently in the second row of the NovaCare Complex auditorium soaking up each word.

"For most people, the draft is the best day of their life," Vinny Curry said. "But growing up an Eagle fan, being blessed with the opportunity of seeing Brian Dawkins retire and give a speech here, this has got to be the best day of my life."

Curry, the Eagles' third-round pick out of Marshall, grew up in Central Jersey as a huge Eagles fan.

How huge?

When NFL Network asked permission to come to his house for the draft, he declined. Turns out he didn't want to have to get rid of all the Eagles memorabilia on the walls. The caps, gloves, helmets and – most of all – the Brian Westbrook No. 36 jersey.

"I wasn't taking the stuff down," he said with a laugh Saturday afternoon. "This was my last day, if I would have gone to a different team, of being an Eagle fan."

Curry cracked up as he talked about Freddie Mitchell and his championship belt routine. He talked about how the Eagles struggled in the late 1990s, before the arrival of Donovan McNabb – who he got to meet Saturday. He spoke about Trott and Duce and Hugh. Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent.

He sounded just like one of us.

The only difference is that a bunch of his heroes were there Saturday to welcome him to the brotherhood.

"Michael Vick told me if I ever need anything to call him, and he's going to take me under his wing and show me the ropes," Curry said. "People here are so embracing, and it's very humbling.

"As a fan, you never really know the people outside the helmet. So you always wonder, and you come up with impressions of what that person is until you actually meet them and you're like, 'Wow, he's probably one of the nicest people I ever met."

As a fan, Curry never made it to an Eagles game. The preseason opener against the Steelers on Aug. 9 will be his first.

"My dad couldn't afford tickets," he said. "I just watched in the living room and pretended I was there."

Curry didn't have to pretend Saturday.

He was there for the show.

He watched spellbound as a video featuring Dawkins' most crushing hits was shown on a movie screen. He watched Vick, Jeremiah Trotter, McNabb, Tra Thomas and several other Eagle greats walk onto the stage. He watched owner Jeff Lurie's historic announce that Dawkins' No. 20 would be retired. And then he watched Dawkins' riveting retirement speech.

"It brought back some memories in my household as a kid," Curry said. "Watching the Eagles game on Sundays, trying to rush home from Pop Warner games to see them boys play."

It was overwhelming.

"To see his teammates come back, the way they embraced him, and the way they embraced me was really something special," Curry said. "It's a moment I'll never forget in my life."

The symmetry was striking. Curry's NFL career was starting on the same day and in the same room as the career of one of his favorite players was ending.

"His passion for the game is similar to the way that I love the game," Curry said. "He wears his emotion on his sleeves, just like I wear my emotions on my sleeve, if you watch the tape. When he was talking about sore losing and not wanting to shake the other [team's] hands, it sounded like me, but just an older version.

"To just be here and meet him, it's unbelievable, because I see myself in everything that he was talking about. I was really sitting back there and fighting back not to tear up. ...

"I used to picture myself on Sundays and say, 'This is going to be me one day.' To actually see everything come through, it's mind blowing. I'm a really positive guy, and I just want people in my hometown and all across the world to know, there's never a dream too big. As long as you stay positive and stay true to yourself, all things are possible."

And that's why Curry was so upbeat, so positive, so happy Saturday, even though he began the weekend as a projected first-round pick and wound up being selected very late in the second round.

"I was upset that I slid," he said. "But I slid into a perfect situation. Life if it's 100 degrees outside and I slid into the pool."

Hours after Saturday's ceremony was over, Dawkins, McNabb, Trotter and several other Eagles and former Eagles were still mingling and laughing and sharing stories in the NovaCare cafeteria.

At one point, Curry walked in, and Vick pulled him aside.

"He told me, 'You're not an Eagles fan anymore,'" Curry said. '"You're a teammate.'"

its not time if he cant play....the problem here hasnt been that they have not dressed him....its that he hasnt done anything to deserve to be dressed....andy has has repeatedly showed acts of utter desperation over the last couple of years and yet he wont call on a number 3 draft pick to see if he can possibly spark an inept pass rush

me thinks the cat cant play and thats the problem...the pick itself

He might do better in a 4-3 but he's a rotational player. I thought they'd let him walk to tell you the truth. Way too much money for a flash here and there type player.

He only flashed because of the system.  Put him in a 4-3 and turn him loose on the QB.  You need that and if he becomes a consistent 10-12 sack guy, that contract is more than worth it.
Title: Re: Vinny Curry, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: QB Eagles on February 02, 2016, 07:52:20 PM
He wasn't necessary, but it's one less hole to fill I guess.

There might not be much in the way of FA money left the way the Eagles are going, so I guess the team is going to be the same one that went 7-9 last year, only plus Howie's first round draft pick, minus Walter Thurmond, and swapping out the college coach for a high school coach. Exciting stuff.

"IF" he becomes a consistent 10-12 sack guy

I like Curry, I'm glad he's back, I'm excited to see what he can do in a 4-3, but that's way too much for a guy who's unproven.

He had nine sacks and four forced fumbles in a part time gig playing out of position in 2014.  I'm just saying he's got ability and if you put him in the proper position he will likely excel and play to the level of the contract.

howie has not done much with these deals that would cause you to trust him or not trust him...they are pretty standard stuff...yeah you can nitpick the celek or vinny deals but barring some unforeseen things happening in FA cause I suspect they are going to be really quiet the draft is going to be a HUGE opinion maker

Sounded to me like the Curry deal was sealed the second the Eagles switched to a 4-3. During his PC he said he didn't think it would have happened if they were still in the old scheme. He's a lifelong Eagle fan and quite frankly he doesn't seem too bright, so it wouldn't surprise me if what looks like a fairly big deal is actually a bit of a hometown discount under the new cap.

Cap hits: $3M/$9M/$11M/$11.25M/$12M

So basically a 3 year deal unless he can prove he can flourish in the 4-3. Left plenty of space in the '16 cap.

Americas Professional Sports Fan says that this is hailing a signing.

And by all means who wouldn't like the signing since he showed potential?

I guess GM APSF would've let him walk because his super sports levelheaded approach would've told him Vinny would suck after signing.

Vinny Curry's 1 year deal is worth 2.25M with the potential to make 1.25M more, per source.]

For a Veteran player of Curry's caliber that's a steal.

I can't say the last play he made, but I do remember often thinking to myself, "he's better against the run than advertised."

Put it this way, he won't be a weakness.

The last few pages of this thread is me saying he's not worth his last two contracts. Now he's playing for peanuts.

I could care less that they signed him...but the guy is awful.....he was awful last time he was on the eagles and he was even worse last season...the bigger thing here is that their outside pass rush is a huge concern for next year....unless derek Barnett comes back and is the real deal they are in trouble on the edge

OMGAWFUL!

that is incredibly accurate, though... I don't think he makes the final 53.  They're drafting a DE and they always seem to find a camp body sensation who beats the odds, and makes the team.

Whatever the case, he's back, so I wish him well.

Yet you called him a bargain signing for the Bucs at 3 years $27 million? Wish I could find when you were arguing me that Bennett wasn't an upgrade over Curry.

Welp, sooner or later the Eagles have to hook into an FSU guy who isn't a disappointment, so sure.
