There really isn't any.  I get that he has injury issues, so it makes sense in that regard, I just don't see any future upside in signing him to this kind of contract when you could have gotten a more dependable Marshall for more years and basically equal money.

Eagles are a cap nightmare next year too, at least this gives the Eagles some flexibility next offseason, after Alshon misses his usual 6 games and the Eagles need a full time WR.

Bingo. Can prove he's an elite level WR, and get a better long-term contract from the Eagles next year.

Except if he proves he's an elite level WR there may be 5 other teams knocking on his door who can throw way more $$ at him than the Birds can. Still, it gives them the inside track and a tag and trade wouldn't be the worst thing if it turns out they can't afford him.

If he has a decent enough season to get an offer from another team, he's at least bought them another season to find a real receiver to grow up with Wentz.

Love the move and I'm hoping he stays a while, but since the top 3 WRs are all potential UFAs next offseason and the futures of Agholor and DGB are in doubt, here's next year's UFA WR class as an FYI:

Fitzgerald (likely retiring)
DeAndre Hopkins
Jarvis Landry
Edelman
Adam Thielen
Allen Robinson
Davante Adams
Martavis Bryant
Marqise Lee
Amendola
Mike Wallace
Eddie Royal (might be a salary cap cut this year)
Paul Richardson
Donte Moncrief
Harry Douglas
Cody Latimer
Josh Huff
Stedman Bailey
John Brown
anyone else that signs a 1-year deal this offseason
Title: Re: Alshon Jeffrey, Philadelphia Eagle

Of that list, Hopkins is the only one who really does anything for me.  Some other nice guys on that list, but none of them are really game changers on their own.

I don't really care much for Barnwell, but so far this is his favorite free agent signing, in fact the only one that gets a grade above B+.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page/Barnwellx2017FAgrades/bill-barnwell-grades-big-2017-free-agent-deals-nfl

Gave a B+ to the Torrey Smith deal too.
Title: Re: Alshon Jeffrey, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: Sgt PSN on March 09, 2017, 10:41:05 PM
The Torrey Smith deal got a major bump from the Jeffery signing, imo.  It was like a C/C+ on it's own and would have remained there had it been the only/best FA receiver they acquired.

Then they can tag him and buy time to sign him to a long-term deal.

This is his sixth season in the NFL; he's already shown his ceiling, or his level of eliteness. Justifying a one year deal by "him staying healthy for this year proves he'll never get hurt again" doesn't make sense to me.
Title: Re: Alshon Jeffrey, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: AshishPatel81 on March 10, 2017, 01:43:26 AM
The one year deal was probably more Jeffery's idea than the Eagles. He wants to make bank, and he wasn't gonna get it with his value perceived lower by the league. This is his chance to build it back up in a situation he thought was best.
Title: Re: Alshon Jeffrey, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: Rome on March 10, 2017, 05:42:47 AM
He may have gotten a multi-year deal from a Cleveland or Jacksonville or even the Vikings, but the smart money was to take the deal from someone, and play himself into a better one next year.  I'm just shocked that he chose the Eagles because let's face it, it's not like they're some offensive juggernaut.  I like what they did with Torrey Smith and the Warmack pickup is nice for depth along the line, (and yes, he could be a starter, but who knows) but the running game is still a huge question mark and the quarterback is still unproven.   Just saying, there's other teams out there with better situations for a guy like him to prove his worth.

I agree with you but the Eagles don't seem to be approaching it that way.  You don't act as aggressively as they have if you're planning on a run in 2020.
Title: Re: Alshon Jeffrey, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: Eagaholic on March 10, 2017, 07:51:01 AM
Actually the Eagles are in year 12 of rebuilding but who's counting?

Teams won't admit they are rebuilding for more than a year if at all, they think it's bad for ticket sales. But smart teams realize there's a difference between turning around a bad team in a year to make the playoffs where 'once you get in anything can happen,' vs having a legit shot at a championship. I'm not even sure which way the Eagles brain trust is looking at it but I have to think it is taking a long view since Howie decided to dismantle Chips team.
Title: Re: Alshon Jeffrey, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: Eagaholic on March 10, 2017, 07:58:49 AM
And yeah Alshon is basically doing a Maclin, betting on himself to prove he is worthy of getting a better long term payoff. Even if one healthy year doesn't prove anything long term, it can be a difference maker in getting better long term offers from more desirable clubs.

other than the moves to get wentz which was a move for the future i dont know what they have done that would be deemed aggressive...trading picks and signing brandon cooks long term would be aggressive...signing alshon jeffery to a one year deal to me is not

anyway the best evidence that they are in the process of a long term plan is from the GM himself less than a week ago

"You've got to take some short-term pains for that, and hopefully, when you do that, you get the long-term gains," Roseman said. "You want to do something that so two, three, four years from now that maybe you have that opportunity to add that missing piece, or one piece, you have that flexibility."

"We're not sitting here and saying we're one player away - that if we just sign this one guy, that's going to put us in position to just get over the top," Roseman said Wednesday at the NFL scouting combine. "We're going to try to build this piece-by-piece and be aware of the risk involved in things. That doesn't mean we don't take some risks or have to get through the moment at certain positions, but that's our plan."

He's the leading receiver on a 10-1 team that spreads the ball around more than most.  He also draws attention from the defenses they play against which allows those secondary weapons more opportunities to make plays.  He's been great so far.  But sure, let's piss on good news.

Howie bein Howie. Overpaid a bit because of injury risk if the fully guaranteed number is actually true. Still, Jeffrey has become a core member in the team's success and although they are in poor cap shape that is somewhat offset by having a lot of core guys already locked up. And I don't think anybody saw it coming how they would have so few needs at this point in time, no glaring draft need. The OLine and defensive backfield in particular have really evolved. Be great if they could draft a real game breaking receiver that compliments Jeffrey.

I like Jeffery but any number you look at shows he hasn't been great.  Catch %, raw numbers, doesn't matter.  He's also dropped more passes than he's known for.

But he's a good fit for the offense and been getting better.  Seems like a good dude and is a RZ threat.

QuoteAdding context to #Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery's day. He played today's game with cracked ribs, which teammate Lane Johnson disclosed to reporters. An MRI earlier in the week revealed the injury, but he played through it. Jeffery also hung tough answering every question post-game

Last year he played with a torn rotator cuff and yesterday with broken ribs. He came to the Eagles with a rep as injury prone but I think now it is more fair as a tough guy.

The shtein he caught after yesterday seriously pissed me off.  I'm happy to see the outpouring of support for the guy, though.

We can be brutal as hell but a guy like that gets all due respect.  The whole team fought and scratched and never gave up.  Made me proud, actually.

Apparently he went on Twitter and said he had the best hands in the NFL, so people were giving him shtein for that.

I hope sometime soon the birds go down there and destroy those pricks and the products of incest can go back home and figure out if mommy is also their sister or their first cousin.  I don't think it will happen but I hope the Rams kick the shtein out of them.  I'll take McVay slop fest any day over more Brees stroke offs and that smug little bitch Peyton.

Can't remember a player who wears the kelly green throwbacks as much as Alshon. Yesterday post-game it was Reggie White.

By far one of my favorite of the current players.  Cox, Jenkins, Alshon probably my three favorite players.
