Title: Smart Phones, Tablets, Gadgets, etc....
Post by: reese125 on January 09, 2011, 12:27:08 PM
I know we got some gadget heads in here, and this year is loaded with all different makers of these things other than Apple.

These were some of the hottest gadgets at the CES this past week

Its going to pretty strange when Manning throws an interception, he runs over to the sideline and swipes his finger across the tablet screen to see what he did wrong.

I will be purchasing this tonight (http://www.wired.com/playbook/2011/02/pennant-ipad-app-baseball/#)

QuoteMajor League Baseball fans quickly became smitten last year with Apple's iPad, thanks to the $15 At Bat app and its built-in MLB.TV functionality that allowed users to watch streaming video of live games wherever they might be. Now, an impressive new app delivers instant access to 60 years of baseball box scores, all reformatted and presented in a rich, infographical interface.

The brainchild of developer Steve Varga, Pennant will cost you only $5, but for that you get a wealth of historical baseball information: 115,000 box scores, detailing every play from every game going back to 1950.

I've been due for a phone upgrade for a while, and since I really have no use for a big fancy smart phone...I got the BlackBerry Torch instead, for $99

So what apps are good to get? and the ones that you pay for, they are one time payments right? Like .99 cents for the baseball scoreboard and such?

Blackberry's are terrible.  You should have bought a rock and painted a key pad on it....would have saved you $97.

I don't know what apps are available for Blackberry but I'm sure there's plenty of "common" apps available for all phones like ESPN, Facebook, CNN, etc.  As for the cost, most are a 1 time fee but some do have subscription rates.....could be monthly, could be annually.  However, any app you purchase should come with free lifetime updates.

I've paid for a few.

ESPN Radio was like $2
MLB TV for my ipad was $20 I think

There's a few others but I think they were .99 apps.  I've spent less than $30 in apps but I've got probably close to 100 on my phone/ipad.

Speaking of apps......is anyone familiar with Evernote?  I've got the free version on my phone/ipad/home pc and I really like it but it has limited capabilities and was thinking about subscribing to their full version.  It's been very useful for my job and the features available in the full version would really be a benefit.  But they want $5/mo or $45/year which isn't much in the grand scheme of things but at the same time, I don't like spending money out of my own pocket for work.  So has anyone ever used the full version or know of any free/less expensive apps that have similar functions?

Sarcasm meter not working today, eh? See Sarge's post....in the world of the smart phone, BlackBerry's are pretty much laughed at by anyone who cares about how awesome their smart phone is.

Sarge...All I really needed a phone for is calling, texting, and the camera. The fact that I could get the newest blackberry for 99 bucks just made it so I could get that and a lot of smartphone capabilities on the cheap. I was considering getting the iphone 3G but I've heard too many complaints about it freezing up and shtein, and the dude at AT&T said blackberry's are less cool and fun but a lot more reliable. Works for me.

And you're right, I do get the basic ESPN apps and shtein like that, just seeing what if anything else was worth in terms of sports.

I did the same with T-Mobile opting out of my contract for $200. It's been about a year since I switched to Sprint and I've probably saved $200-$300, have a better phone, and better service. What's funny is I contacted T-Mobile beforehand asking them if they could come close to matching my deal and they laughed at me like I was lying. Then I canceled my service and they called me asking why. I was with them for 7 years too and never missed a payment. farg them.

Are you sure it wasn't the 3GS?  I'm not even sure if ATT stores are still selling the 3G anymore.  Right now on ATT's website, they are offering an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $49.  Granted, 8GB sucks and you'll fill it up within 24 hours, but that's still a pretty good deal.  You could also get a refurbished 32GB iPhone 4 for $179.

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/packages/iphone-packages.jsp

They've got a lot of good deals on various iPhones.

And I'm not pimping the iPhone as much as I'm hating on Blackberry.  They're crap.  If you go with a smartphone, go with anything other than Crapberry.  Aside from the fact that I just hate their phones, they also have the worst app market of the major smartphones.  Either go with an iPhone or a Droid.  Both are essentially the same and have damn near all the same apps available.  So if you get a smartphone, then you might as well get one that's going to give you the most bang for your buck.  There's minor differences between iPhones and Droids but neither really functions better than the other and neither is really capable of doing more than the other.

You've got 30 days to play with the Crapberry.  It took me about 3 months before I really started to hate mine because it was my first smartphone so I was really overwhelmed with what it could do that I didn't realize just how much it couldn't do.

Take that thing back to the store.  You've been warned.

Yeah, the 50 dollar 3GS deal was the one I meant. But the people i talked to just had so many complaints about the iPhone being unreliable and easily broken (and no cheap way to get it fixed/get a new one)

But you're right, I've got 30 days so I'll see how it goes and talk to some more of my tech savvy friends to see what they say. I really could only afford the 100 bucks, but after 30 days and a couple more paychecks I might be able to throw an additional $50 or so at it...which if i do, I might order of of amazon because some of their deals for an upgrade on a family plan seem to be a little better than actually buying at the store.

What do you think of the EVO? (or, Evo's, if there's multiple ones now...I really don't pay much attention to the phone market)

I assume you mean for the phones?  It's really not that expensive unless you're that guy who has to have the latest and greatest phone.  Otherwise, if you're cool with being a version/model behind, you can usually get pretty good deals.  It's like buying a car at the end of the model year or shopping for shorts in October.

I've had my 3GS for just about a year now and I've got no major complaints.  I've had it freeze on me like 2 or 3 times.  Power off, power on, problem solved.  I don't understand why people get all butthurt if their smartphone freezes.  Chances are, if someone has a problem with their iPhone freezing, it's because they have too many apps running at the same time......kind of like when your computer freezes because you've got too much crap open and the processor can't handle it.  Alot of apps will prompt you to allow it to use your location and send you notifications and crap like that.  So if you allow that for every single app, then your phone is going to farg up because you've got 50 different apps constantly working.

As far as unreliable, it's no more or less reliable than any other phone out there.  It's all about where you are and how many towers you've got around you.  I've had 3 different phones while living out here in the desert.  A basic Samsung flip phone, Crapberry and Iphone.  I had roughly the same signal strength/weakness with all 3.  I'm just in a not so great area for cell phones.

And as far as breaking your iPhone....as long as you buy a decent case for it and don't have a habit of dropping it all the time, then you should be fine.  The screen is kind of fragile I guess but if you crack it, you can get it replaced for about $70 through a local techie.......$200 to have Apple do it.

But you're right, I've got 30 days so I'll see how it goes and talk to some more of my tech savvy friends to see what they say. That's the one with the really big screen, right?  I don't know much about it but I've got a buddy who has one and he's a pretty big technology nerd and he loves it.  I think that's a Sprint phone though......who is your carrier?

If you're just a dumbass who drops his phone all the time, then you'll have to fork over a few extra bucks on an Otter Box.  It's as close to indestructable as you can get...even water resistant.  It's pretty much the tank of cell phone cases.

They're pricey, but worth it to protect your phone.

Yeah, the dude at the AT&T store was telling me about getting that. Does the one for the iPhone come with a screen protector?

Normally I don't drop my phone, but I have a tendency of taking my phone out while drinking....doesn't mix well.

Yes, it has a screen protector.  It's just a clear piece of plastic though, so it's only going to keep your screen clean and free of finger prints, but won't do much to protect against breaking.  But in order to break the screen, you'd have to have to hit it with a hammer or something.  If you drop your phone on the ground, the screen won't break because the case is so much bigger than the phone that the screen is recessed a little.

I have the Otter Box and it's good but it's not scratch resistant at all.  Just keep your keys in the other pocket and you'll be fine.

I've got one too but I pretty much only use it when I'm going to the beach or an amusment park or something.  I've got a very basic case for every day use.  Otter Box is cool, but so damn bulky.  I've got enough bulk in the front of my pants to begin with, so I don't need any more crowding down there.  Good to know you don't have that problem.

Ordered a bluetooth keyboard/protective case for my ipad a couple weeks ago and it finally showed up today.  Tiny keyboard that will take a little getting used to, but it's by far superior than typing on the ipad itself.  $30 on ebay.  Nice.

Click on the Photo icon on the left side of the page.  You have to click the "more" button first to display all the options.

Choose: Create new album.

You can copy & paste photos from each album.

thanks chief

when you say copy and paste you mean literally right click on a pic and copy then move to the other album and right click paste

Post by: Sgt PSN on May 29, 2011, 02:15:52 PM
That way sounds complicated.  Go to your photos, open the album that has pics you want to move.  Click edit album, then click edit photos.  Underneath each pic you'll see a drop down arrow that says Move to.  Click the arrow and select the album that you want to move the pic to.  You can do this for multiple pics in the album.  Then click Save Changes at the bottom of the screen.

The WWDC is today in San Fran and starts in an hour--Steve Jobs in keynote speaker. For anybody that doesnt know (or cares), this is the event that Apple breaks ground every year with something new in the tech world. OSX Snow Leopard, the 3G, 3GS, App store, Iphone 4, etc.

Looks to be OSX Lion and the new iCloud, but hoping Jobs pulls a rabbit out here--maybe Iphone 5 specs I dont know.

Bought an android tablet.  Rougly a week after I get it up and running, the company goes out of business. Since it uses a modified version of android, no more software updates.  Awesome.

Title: Re: Smart Phones, Tablets, Gadgets, etc....

I wouldnt say so, many just use standard Android.

My tablet was a tablet and an E-reader connected together (you could surf, download books on the tablet, and then read them on the E-reader).  Because of this, they had to take android and make updates to link them together.  (it was pretty cool, you could embed stuff into e-books that would then play on the tablet, like videos and what not).  Because of this, if I root the thing and put on standard android, yeah, the tablet would work, but the other half of the device would become useless.

There's this on amazon.com for $309:

Sony HDR-CX190 HD Handycam Camcorder with 5.3MP and 25x Optical Zoom + 16GB SDHC + Sony Case + Replacement Battery Pack + Mini HDMI Cable + Accessory Kit

Thoughts?

I love my phone, but the video is for gadget kind of videos, usually never more than 90 seconds.

Digital camcorders are still where it's at if you have to record some kind of event.

I have an android, and I rarely use my video camera anymore. My phone shoots in HD, and digitally zooms enough for most things. My video camera was awesome when I bought it 8 years ago, but the tapes are a pain in the ass and Sony never updated the drivers, which makes it hard for me to get the stuff on my computer.

I think the big advantage to having an actual camcorder is that it's much easier to control the camera itself when filming.  Cell phones and digi cameras are great for capturing short videos but if you're filming anything longer than a minute or 2, it's a pain in the ass trying to hold the thing somewhat steady.  And I think regardless of the quality of the video shot with a phone or camera, a camcorder is still probably going to be a little better quality....if nothing else other than the fact that I think most/all of them have some sort of stability control.  Just like I don't think that a camera phone will ever replace a regular camera in terms of over all photo quality.  It's mostly just about what you want.

Upgraded to the iPhone 4S yesterday. My 3Gs basically died after the IOS 5 update. Battery life was dramatically reduced and it would constantly just power off whenever I'd use it no matter how much of a charge it had and wouldn't power back on until I plugged it in.

get squaretrade for insurance.  if i recall you can't insure an iphone through the phone providers because apple itself doesn't provide it.

squaretrade is a one time payment for i think two years of insurance

When I upgraded to the new iPhone, I lost my unlimited data plan and went with their 2GB for $30/month.  Even though I don't think I'll come close to using that much data in a month, I still want to check randomly throughout the month to make sure that I'm not going to go over.  I think I found it but just want to make sure:

Settings/General/Cellular Usage

The sum of Data Sent and Data Received is my total usage, right?  Do I have to manually reset it each month or does it automatically reset for me?

Also, I'm guessing that any type of push notification I receive eats into my data allowance.  So email, facebook notifications, score updates, etc are all running up my data usage, right?

i didn't know iphones had anything other than unlimited plans. granted i have never even seen a bill for it since its through work but i just checked cellular usage and it says ive used over 16GB in the last 8 days and 18 hours. so i guess it resets every month. but i don't see how it would be possible to stay under 2GB...i don't even use it for anything crazy but seems like i average 2GB per day.

Title: Re: Smart Phones, Tablets, Gadgets, etc....
Post by: Sgt PSN on May 17, 2012, 02:39:26 PM
I'm 99% sure this is what you want.

Settings/General/About/Diagnostics & Usage

Select "Don't Send"

Also, whenever you download new apps, a lot of them ask you if you want to receive push notifications, badges, turn on location services, etc.....

For example, the facebook app will send you a notification for everything from the get go.  So you'll get notifications for new messages, comments, replies to comments you made, events, friend requests, tags, etc.  I've only got push notifications enabled for new messages and wall posts.  I don't care if someone is sending me a friend request or tagging me in a picture.  That shtein can wait until I get home.  If I had every facebook notification turned on, my phone would be blowing up all day with notifications.  Farg that.

If you ever want to change any of the options associated with any of you apps, go into Settings and then scroll down the screen until you see a list of your apps.  Tap on the app and you can adjust everything there.

How do I remove my credit card info? I won't order shtein but I'm afraid my daughter will while she's playing one of the 'free' apps. I tried a few suggestions online by going into the itunes stuff but it won't let me delete it.
Title: Re: Smart Phones, Tablets, Gadgets, etc....
Post by: Sgt PSN on May 18, 2012, 10:47:34 AM
Not sure about that one.  I'm pretty sure you have to provide a cc just to have an itunes account.  But every time you download an app, movie, music, book, etc you should be prompted to provide your password before it will install....even for free apps.  Maybe there's a setting to change that in iTunes on your pc, but I don't know of a way to change it on your phone.

Also, there is a small window (maybe 5 min tops) where if you download an app and provide your password that you can keep installing new apps without having to re-enter your password, so as long as you dont hand her the phone immediately after downloading an app, you shouldn't have to worry about your kid accidentally buying anything.

Anyone know how to send a text message conversation [iphone 4s] to a computer to print? I sent a copy to my email but it just gave me the standard text with no names attached. I see the goofy ones posted here and facebook all the time.

Push the home button and the sleep/wake button (on top of the phone) at the same time. Takes a pic of whatever's on your screen at the time and saves it in your photos.

I synced my phone to my roommates computer which automatically downloaded some of his apps... Now every time I want to do an update it asks me for his password. I deleted the apps which were downloaded from his account but it's still - from time to time - asking me for his password. Anyone know how to permanently delete his account from my phone?

It's probably synced with your iTunes account as well.  Go into iTunes, open your apps page and delete the app from your computer.

The one thing I like about my ipad is the facetime feature on it. I'm communicating with clients and people across the globe. farging dope.

Not so much a tablet as much as a hybrid. It's a big phone but it's flat-out great.

I was walking through Best Buy today and noticed some decent prices on tablets and netbooks. Some of the smaller 8GBs tablets with 7-10 inch screens were down under $200 (including the samsung galaxy)

I'd mainly be looking to buy one as somethnig smaller than my laptop that I can bring to class to use to write down notes and do work and etc. Would I be better off just getting a netbook for that or are some of the tablets out there too good to pass up on?

I'd even be willing to go with one of the "Cheaper" brands (lenovo, asus, etc) unless someone here has a good reason not to.

If you're looking at a tablet for taking notes, and you want to do it quickly, you're going to want the stand, the usb keyboard, maybe the nice case for it, a stylus, and the 32g SD card. At that point the netbook may be cheaper and less of a hassle.

I bought a 32g sd card for my laptop and dedicated it to ReadyBoost. It runs marginally better.

If you want it for class so you can take notes, I'd probably just go with a netbook.

If you go the tablet route though, there is no shortage of cases with keyboards out there.  I bought some generic case off ebay for my ipad and 2 years later and the thing still works perfectly and I usually go about a month between charges.  Only paid like $30 for it too.  Point is, you can go tablet without taking on a lot of aftermarket expense with keyboards and cases.

This is basically the case I have, just to give you an idea.

I've seen some of the plug in keyboards for sale for pretty cheap, but I guess I'd have to take a look at the store to see what I would need/what would work with whatever tablet I selected.

Any brands to avoid? Anyone recommend anything? I'm a little apprehensive about getting an iPad simply because I'd like to avoid any compatibility/conversion headaches in case I need to submit or transfer something from it. I guess I could have those same problems from an android too, I just haven't heard as many complaints about that from classmates as I have with their apple products.

According to Best Buy's site, this is a "hot selling" tablet..
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+Galaxy+Tab+2+10.1+with+16GB+Memory+-+Titanium+Silver/5215429.p?id=1218625359021&skuId=5215429

The only two netbooks they have according to their site that are cheaper than that are Acer, not sure what the quality is there. I could have sworn I saw more of a selection at the store though.

Also another question that a technerd like GF might be able to answer...is there a huge difference between an Intel processor and one of the other brands? I'm seeing full sized HP laptops for sale for less than $300, but they have things like the "AMD E-Series processor" or something like that.
Title: Re: Smart Phones, Tablets, Gadgets, etc....
Post by: General_Failure on May 09, 2013, 10:01:03 PM
Anything will be fine there, so long as the netbook doesn't have overheating issues. A processor burning away at 120+ degrees with only an eighth of an inch of plastic between it and your hand is not as much fun as you'd think.

AMD makes a very good processor.  The last PC I bought back in 2006 had an AMD.....Athlon I think was the model name/version.

I didn't know how much "worse" the performance was with those, if at all. It's amazing how much having the name "intel" on the computer seems to add to the price.
Title: Re: Smart Phones, Tablets, Gadgets, etc....
Post by: Sgt PSN on May 09, 2013, 10:21:12 PM
The performance on my desktop was great.  I couldn't tell you a damn thing about AMD today though since I've got a Mac, but do a google search for the AMD processor and see how it compares to Intel.....more specifically, see which Intel processor it most favorably compares to.

Even with my student loan money I'm now getting I don't think I can justify paying the price for a macbook when I've still got a perfectly working HP. Some of the ipad prices are a bit more reasonable though, especially the ipad minis...but I've had a lot of classmates having trouble submitting assignments from their apple products for whatever reason. I don't really know enough about android to know if that would be any easier though. I mean, it's not windows, so I assume there would also be issues with that?? No idea.

As for submitting things, I suppose it would depend on what you're submitting and how.

Oh I'm not saying to go buy a Mac (though you should once your income allows for it), just that since I bought mine I haven't used a computer with either and Intel or AMD processor.  My desktop that had the AMD was an HP and like I said, I thought it was great.  The same exact HP with a comparable Intel processor was about $200 more if I remember correctly.  And that PC lasted me 6 years before I went to the Mac.  Point is, if you're concerned about and AMD processor, don't be.  Especially if you're looking at a netbook or laptop specifically for school.

What problems are your classmates having when they submit assignments from Apple products?  If they need to be in Word/Excel/PP, they do know that there are compatible apps for that, right?  Don't they have a PC that they can sync with to pull those docs from their device and then actually save to Word/Excel/PP format before submitting?  I used my iPad and iPhone with a PC for 2-3 years before getting my Mac and had no problems using them for work related stuff.  Me thinks your classmates are doing it wrong.

Also, if it's Windows compatibility you're looking for, then why not look into a Windows tablet?  They start out around the same price as iPad minis I believe.

The more I see Samsung mobile products, the more I want them.  Apple really seems to be stuck in the mud and hasn't really introduced anything exceptionally new or exciting with their phones or tablets in quite some time now.  I know a few people with Galaxy phones and those things seem pretty awesome.  Gotta imagine the tablets are just as nice and they seem to have the ability to multi-task where iPads pretty much only allow you to do one thing at a time.

I think that when I'm ready to upgrade my phone (currently have the iPhone 4S) I'll at least check out the Galaxy and other phones before going to Iphone 5/5S/6/whatever.  The downer with smartphones and tablets though is that if I do decide to go outside of Apple, I have to re-purchase all of the paid apps that I already bought.

Yeah, that's another thing....I like the continuity of having a Mac/iPhone/iPad, although that's not as big of a deterrent for me as having to buy new apps.  But it is nice having everything in 1 place since iTunes is an all-encompassing media manager for music, movies, apps, books, etc, etc.  For those of you with Droid devices, what's the program used to manage your device?  I have to imagine that it's something similar to iTunes, right?

BTW...iTunes has turned into a steaming pile of crap within the last year or so.

As far as apps go, I've maybe spent $40-$50 on apps between both devices, so it's not like it'd be a major expense to replace them, but it still sucks.

We have Apple everything now.  Don't own a PC or any Windows-centric (or Android for that matter) devices anymore so while I was blown away by the S4 I ended up going with the 5S.  It really is quite a phenomenal unit although I agree Apple needs to get its head out of its collective asses and start producing phones with larger screens.

The 5S still looks like the S4's retarded runt of a little brother and the fingerprint sensor is ludicrous, but the bread and butter of the phone (camera/picture quality, processing speed, internet connectivity, and overall ease of and continuity with existing apps, music/video/itunes) are excellent.

I really was thisclose to switching especially considering the Samsung rep at Best Buy was smoking hot and did a good job with her 15 minute run-down of the phone.

I have the original Kindle Fire.  Great to read a book, OK/Good for most apps, a bit slow for Netflix sometimes, too small for internet (without my middle age glasses).  Two years ago I used it to watch a few Phils games when traveling and staying in hotels, but the Fire wasn't supported last year.  Overall I liked it a lot.

I actually bought the 8.9" version for the Fire HD for $169 at Staples.  Kids will inherit the original.  Merry Christmuskah to me!

We switched our family plan with AT&T to something they call "Next."  The long and short of it is that it's an unlimited talk/text plan with shared data among everyone on the plan.  When it comes to upgrading your phone, you no longer pay an upgrade fee.  Now you are more or less "renting to own" your phone and make monthly payments on it for.  How much you pay per month depends on the phone and how long of a commitment you make, but the average seemed to be right around $25.

So I decided to test the waters outside of the iPhone world today and picked up the Samsung Galaxy S5.  Been playing with it for a couple hours and it's foreign as hell but familiar at the same time.  AT&T reduced the length of your trial period from 30 to 14 days, so I'm going to have to really get to know Droid (and Google Play and Samsung Kies) in a relatively short period of time.

I like it so far, but I'm still working on getting it set up the way I want it so it's really too early to say what I actually think of it.

Here's a pretty cool promo going on right now though......

If you purchase a Galaxy S5 (not sure what other phones, if any, this applies to), you get a $50 AMEX gift card.  If you want, you can use that $50 for the newest Samsung tablet (Tab 3 I think it's called).  It's roughly the size of an iPad mini.  Then you pay $10 a month to add it to your existing data plan.  Not a bad deal, imo.  I didn't bother grabbing the tablet today because I've got 2 weeks to decide if I want it.  So I'll play around with the phone and if I decide to keep it, I'll probably grab the tablet as well.

If any of you have droid phones and can give me some tips on it, I'd appreciate it.

Lol. I do feel a little dirty for switching because I've been very happy with my iPhone, but I want a bigger screen an Apple doesn't offer it yet. I hear the iPhone 6 is going to be comparable to bigger phones like the Galaxy, but I also know that it's going to be more expensive. When we switched plans, it knocked $50 off my bill each month, so even with the $25/mo I'm paying on this phone, I'm still saving money. The 5S would run me $33/mo so I'm guessing that's about the price the 6 will go for too.  Worst case scenario is I switch back to Apple in 18 mo.

Android users help me out here.....I've noticed that a lot of apps want to have access to things like my phone calls, contact list, calendar, and other things that seem completely unnecessary for an app to have access to.  And these are what should be reputable apps like CBS Sports, for example.  Is this all for data mining or are there legit reasons why things like a sports app would need to access that type of info?

Thats why the apps are free vs istore stuff.  More money to be made in data sales of your user base than charging you 5-10 per app.  The NSA loves google play i'm sure

So you're saying that Droid apps are more intrusive than their iTunes counterparts?  That might be a deal breaker for me.

That much I know. I'm just wondering if Droid apps are more intrusive than iPhone. If the free CBS Sports app has access to my contacts on Droid, does the free iTunes version have it as well?

root your device and use droidwall.  also get an lg g2.  awesome camera.. less bloatware.. don't need to use kies.. true plug and play on a pc.  i had a s2 and s3 and always had a problem.

the g3 i assume should be coming out by then but i haven't heard much about it.  the ease of use and quickness make it a winner for me.  it doesn't have 22 features that are neat but will never be used, but the ones it does have are usable like the quick pull up camera if you need to get a quick shot.   it also doesn't have front buttons (double tap turns it on).

Giving this Tmobile trial a go
http://explore.t-mobile.com/test-drive-free-trial?cm_mmc=Purchase-_-Display-_-Revere-_-Revere&csdids=109139128_282624201_58451495_998766

I have no idea what Tmobile's coverage map is in reality.  Looking at their map i have a perfect signal at my house, where as OpenSignal's application says it sucks.  I've been a Verizon user since the days of them Aquiring Cellular One.  But 160 per month for 900 minutes, maybe 100 of which i use, just is a waste.  Add into that I have Unlimited Data, which the second that I make a change, it's gone forever.  It'll be interesting to see what Tmobiles coverage really is.  Priced out a similar family plan  and it'll save me 60 bucks per month.

I recently gave up my unlimited data plan with AT&T because in the off chance that I'd go over 3gb in a month, they'd turn my speed back to the point that the Web was almost unusable. Now we have 10gb of shared data, but I save $40/mo and we get full speed for all 10gb.

Still nice to try it out for a few days without signing a contract.

I've never pre-ordered a phone before because I prefer to let it hit the market and have others deal with the bugs, glitches, and exploding batteries, but I pre-ordered the Note 8 anyway. Sam's Club has a deal going for pre-orders that was just to good to pass up - choice of either Gear 360 camera or wireless charging cradle + 128GB MicroSD card,  along with a $200 SC gift card,  and they're waiving the activation fee.  I probably won't get the free activation fee because I waited too long to sign up for it,  but that's fine. It's only $36.

Gonna go with the frivolous gift and take the camera. It's like $230. The charging station is only $80 and I don't need another MicroSD card.

Same here. I'm still using my Note 4; was going to do the Note 7 until the recall. I did mine through Best Buy, $150 off, then a deal to trade my Note 4 in to Verizon for another $240 credit, and the Samsung stuff.

That looks like the previous model. This deal I'm doing includes the newest 2017 model.

Doesn't matter so much about the price though, I just want something frivolous to go with my frivolous phone.

My Note 4 has 2 payment lefts on it, so I'll just pay it off before I go pick up the phone. No intentions of trading it in. This way if I don't like the 8 for any reason or if it's seriously defective, I can just return it and go back to my 4.

I almost went with BB because the $150 off would reduce my Next plan by $5/month, but the $200 gift card that sams is throwing in was too good to pass up.

I wonder what the mic is like on that camera. I'll have to look into it...if it's good, my kid could get some good use out of it. If it's muddy, it would be pointless for him and I'd get the other stuff.

I was planning to keep my Note 4, but getting $250 for it with the Note 8 purchase was just too good to pass up. Basically, I'd rather lower my monthly payment than have it sitting in a drawer, especially considering I only paid $199 for it on release (back when phones were subsidized). I have a spare s4 in case of emergencies. The reviews on the Note 8 starting coming out yesterday and they're almost universally outstanding. I can't see why you wouldn't like it over your Note 4. After the money they lost last year, this has to be the safest purchase in the universe.

The only thing even close to negative is that for most people, the S8+ is good and similar enough, while being cheaper-- but even that's not the case with the deals they have going on. The Note 8 is actually cheaper, so it's a no-brainer (particularly considering the extra RAM, sPen and dual camera array).

I highly doubt I won't like the phone, but I'd prefer to keep my N4 just in case there's still any kind of fatal flaw with the N8.  I know the odds on that are slim to none after the N7 fiasco, but better safe than sorry.  Besides, there's always the possibility of accidentally breaking the new phone, so it's nice to have a back up.  I've also got 2 spare batteries and a charger.  It's not a lot of money, but that's like an extra $40 I've got invested in the phone.  I've currently got an old iPhone 4S mounted on the handlebars of my motorcycle that I use to play music and record my rides.  Battery sucks on it now though.  I'll probably just replace it with the N4 come spring.

Yeah, I don't think there's any "premium" or flagship phones left that have a removable battery.  The microsd card slot is nice, but the N8 is packing 64gb internal storage and with the major development in cloud storage in recent years, I kind of feel like expandable storage isn't a real necessity.  I subscribed to Office 365 and they give you 1TB of OneDrive storage.  That could potentially cause a bump in data usage, but as long as I'm not trying to backup a ton of video while I'm off wi-fi, I don't see it being a problem.

Given a choice, I'd take the replaceable battery over the microsd slot any day.  First world problems are the farging worst.
Title: Re: Smart Phones, Tablets, Gadgets, etc....
Post by: Zanshin on September 06, 2017, 03:47:27 PM
True, but video takes up a ton of space and sometimes it's handy to have the extra capacity on something that's easy enough to swap out. So many high-res videos of the wife dancing around naked....or stupid videos of some kid playing guitar. One of them, can't remember which.
Title: Re: Smart Phones, Tablets, Gadgets, etc....
Post by: Sgt PSN on September 06, 2017, 04:56:39 PM
Haha.  I can definitely see the storage being handy for people who shoot a ton of high-res video.  I'm generally not one of those people.  But I look at it like this....

On my 32gb N4, I generally hold steady at about 20gb of used internal storage, leaving me roughly 12GB of free space for whatever.  7.5GB of that is System Memory, which I assume is where all of the Android OS, Samsung's Touchwiz, and whatever carrier added bloatware is kept, so I'm really only consuming about 12GB of storage with my own stuff.   On my microsd card I'm only consuming 16GB (out of 64GB), and most of that is music.

I'm thinking on the Note 8 there will probably be like 10-15GB taken off the top with System Memory. Going high end with 15GB dedicated to the OS and such, that's gonna leave me 49GB of storage.  If I were to put the contents of my external card on the internal memory, combined with what I already keep on my phone's internal memory, that adds up to 28GB.  Still got 21GB left over.  2hrs of HD video consumes about 1.5GB, so I'd have to record (and keep) like 28 hours worth of video to max out my internal storage.  I'm not sure how much space 4k video takes up, but even if it's double, that means it would take 14hrs of video recording to completely fill my available storage.  I don't know of too many people who record that often without being able to upload to the cloud.

This is just my own personal preference too.  I could much easier live without the expandable storage than the replaceable battery.  I really wish I could just live without these things completely.  They really are time and money sucks.

Nah, I think that ship sailed. Under the guise of making it waterproof (which is good), they're also making sure we buy HAVE to buy a new phone in a few years because of the battery degradation (which is good...for them).

Which would have been fine if they hadn't literally just told me that it to come get it. So, now I'll get it tomorrow...along with a bunch of free stuff that I allowed them to give me to shut me up about how they needlessly farged up my day.

Well, it sounded a lot like that. Only the store couldn't do anything, so I called a corporate number on the way home and talked to an idiot whom only pissed me off more, so then I kept asking for supervisors until I finally connected with someone whom at least pretended to give a shtein. As they're basically Amazon's showroom, they better care about customer service at least a little.

So my 360 degree camera got here the other day.  About a 3 week turnaround from the time I submitted the promotion until it arrived at my door.  Not bad.

This camera is pretty much what I thought it would be...a pretty cool, kind of gimmicky camera that does a lot of things fairly well but doesn't necessarily do anything great.  It looks more like a sex toy than a camera and even comes with a cock ring.  :chuggiebatsignal

Probably a great little gadget for people who are extremely active with cycling, skiing, mountain climbing, etc, etc since it captures everything around you.  For regular folk, it's probably a little more difficult to find a lot of use for it that really takes advantage of all of its abilities.  Definitely not something I'd have shelled out $230 for, but since it was free, I ain't complaining.  I'll find some good uses for it.

Z, it would probably be pretty awesome if you put 1 on a tri-pod and set it on stage while your kid is performing.

I thought about that. But then I also thought that it would be one more thing for me to consider and figure out, especially if he wants me to do a Facebook live stream or something for him. And finally I decided I'd rather not make my life more complicated than it already is. If he was asking for something like that, I'd do it because, you know, dad. But since he isn't, I'll be happy enough with my free other junk.

Haha. You can live stream with the camera and get the full 360 degree view, so people watching would be able to "drag the screen" and see from all angles.

on the mlbtv app on the appletv i can watch 2 games at once. on the roku jawn i cannot. nhltv is essentially the same product so id reckon its the same thing there.

apple tv is more expensive and has a better, more advanced interface. roku is choppier and simplistic. in essence they both do the same things and roku is cheaper.

My old company used Nortel...seemed to work well enough.

Should this thread be re-named to Technology?

Since I moved into my house about 10 years ago, somebody climbed up through the kitchen window to steal my ex-girlfriends purse (recovered), somebody else (or maybe the same person) broke-in, while I was in NOLA getting robbed by a girl, to try to steal my shtein (neighbors called the cops and all items the thief had were retrieved), and then a few days ago, some motherfarger tried to drill out the lock cylinder but were not able to gain entry.

Considering how popular my house is, I want to buy a couple security cameras to mount around the doors. I'd prefer them to be small enough that they wouldn't be easily noticed. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Also, do private citizens have cost efficient access to facial recognition software?

QuoteConsidering how popular my house is, I want to buy a couple security cameras to mount around the doors. I'd prefer them to be small enough that they wouldn't be easily noticed. Does anybody have any recommendations?

For your exterior, it's actually better for cameras to be visible as their presence serves as a deterrent.  Thief sees cameras, thief chooses a new house to rob.  Most important thing about exterior cameras is placement, as you want them to have visibility of the most vulnerable entry point(s) to your home, but you also want them to be mounted high enough that they can't easily be tampered with.

QuoteAlso, do private citizens have cost efficient access to facial recognition software?

Probably not, but there are a lot of wifi enabled smart lock systems popping up on the market over the last few years.  I haven't really looked into them myself so I couldn't recommend any particular brand over another but they're definitely out there.

Though it may be hard to believe, it's actually a nice enough neighborhood. I'm assuming the latest incident was a neighborhood kid because I'm pretty sure you can't drill a lock out like that to gain entry, but I think I've seen it in a movie.

The facial recognition would be to enable visiting the perpetrator at his home; not unlock my door for me. If it's a kid, no reason to get the police involved, and if it's an adult, maybe I can help him find a job or something.

That is a seriously awesome deal.  I snagged on this morning.  I've had my other Mini for several years and I use it every day.

Best Buy had that same exact price like 2 weeks ago when I bought one for my daughter, except it was the latest 2017 model instead of the 2015.

There is no latest model.  The last update to the Mini was in 2015.  Mine, like your daughter's, is brand new.

Most of the sites I looked at today for the 128gb were $399 too.  The Target one also offers free shipping.

So there.

On a somewhat related note, I've been in Austin for like 2 weeks and I was able to buy a used (2010) 13" Macbook from some dude on CL for $250.  Nice dude, gay as farg, kept the thing in immaculate condition.  And there's like a gazillion similar listings around here for about the same price.  This will make a nice bridge for about 2 years until I feel like shelling out $1200 on a new one.

Seriously though....similar Macbooks in Pennsyltucky are being listed for $500+ and most of them look pretty farging beat up.

No.  How precise do you really need?

Assuming that he's measuring his wang for his grindr profile, he probably wants something that rounds up.

Ha. I don't know about the vacuum, but the thread started at the top and I literally laughed out loud at my own joke before remembering that I made it. So, I'm old and might be losing it completely. But good luck with the roomba.

Same here, G; Rome is probably still burning from your fire.

I appreciate the link, but I already ordered this one (https://www.amazon.com/ILIFE-Robotic-Powerful-Tangle-free-Planning/dp/B06Y56NDF4/) because it's cheap af, and is apparently great for dog hair which is the only reason I need one.

Daughters iphone 6 took a shtein, I just finished paying off my 8. Never noticed a big difference in performance between all the iPhones. I upgraded to xs and gave her the 8. The xs is an actual upgrade. The picture quality is crystal clear.

I just upgraded from the 6s to the 8 last week. Runs a little faster and the camera is better but that's all I've really noticed.

I just didn't wanna go all in on the expense for the newest one  :-D

AT&T employees took bribes to plant malware on the company's network (https://www.zdnet.com/article/at-t-employees-took-bribes-to-plant-malware-on-the-companys-network/)

QuoteThat's when Fahd changed tactics and bribed AT&T employees to install malware on AT&T's network at the Bothell call center. Between April and October 2013, this initial malware collected data on how AT&T infrastructure worked.

According to court documents unsealed yesterday, this malware appears to be a keylogger, having the ability "to gather confidential and proprietary information regarding the structure and functioning of AT&T's internal protected computers and applications.

The DOJ said Fahd and his co-conspirator then created a second malware strain that leveraged the information acquired through the first. This second malware used AT&T employee credentials to perform automated actions on AT&T's internal application to unlock phone's at Fahd's behest, without needing to interact with AT&T employees every time.

In November 2014, as Fahd began having problems controlling this malware, the DOJ said he also bribed AT&T employees to install rogue wireless access points inside AT&T's Bothell call center. These devices helped Fahd with gaining access to AT&T internal apps and network, and continue the rogue phone unlocking scheme.

They're definitely getting cheaper. But that's a helluva deal. The only thing I see at a quick glance is maybe bc the refresh rate is only 60 rather than 120?

I bought a Samsung 40" for my room in August and paid $399

120's nice, but some of them that say that are faking it. Really what you want now is OLED, which is still a little more expensive but you get better contrast and blacker blacks.

I bought a Deebot (cheaper roomba) over the holiday season. We've used it a few times, thing is a beast. Probably not a complete replacement for a regular vacuum cleaning but can def keep the place looking presentable when you're too overwhelmed by work and a baby to vacuum.

Ok smart people... questions:  Does anyone here use Apple Watch and fitness for cardio?  I do interval training and the outdoor walk app on the watch misjudges distance routinely.  My phone says I ran 4.49 miles yet the app on the watch reads 4.16.  Why is there such a discrepancy?  I've contacted the "geniuses" at Apple and they're no help.  Is there a way to recalibrate this thing to set it to use GPS instead of stride?

Note:  I've tried the outdoor run version and the same thing happens only less frequently.

Thanks for your condescension and indifference in advance!

I forgot to check back on this.  Evidently it was a bug error.  It was cured by the last update I did.

And the GPS was spot-on.
