yup...its got one of those annoying cult followings which almost automatically makes it overrated in my book. Its a similar theme to V for Vendatta but a inferior movie.

is it true that the cat in real life is asian but in the movie 21 hes played by a white guy?

Sort of.  The character Spacey plays isn't real, but the guy he could most closely be associated with is Asian in real life.

Almost right.

Spacey's character was in the book, and is real.  He was the former math teacher that organized the gang.  He got the anonymous investors to give the money, taught the blackjack boot camp, and organized the trips.  The difference was in the movie, he was a current teacher, while IRL he used to be a teacher.  They were both named Mickey Rosa, though.

And yes, the main character in the movie is white, but he was asian fo' real.  The real dude was named Jeff Ma, but renamed Kevin for the book and movie.

There's a show about the book and real-life adventures on the History channel (I think)..  I have it set up to Tivo this week.  Called Breaking Vegas I think.

Those history channel specials are sometimes interesting but the way they recap everything they just covered coming out of the commercial drives me total bonkers. I just watched that farg heads!

Still wrong, from what I read.  Mickey Rosa is a fabricated guy based on an Asian guy (John Chang).

This is what I read from the book, which may or may not be loosely based on fact:

Quote
The book's main character is Kevin Lewis, an MIT graduate who was invited to join the MIT Blackjack Team in 1993. Lewis was recruited by two of the team's top players, Jason Fisher and Andre Martinez. The team was financed by a colorful character named Micky Rosa, who had organized at least one other team to play the Vegas strip. This new team was the most profitable yet. Personality conflicts and card counting deterrent efforts at the casinos eventually ended this incarnation of the MIT Blackjack Team.

But, rather than continuing to bicker like IGY in a babefest, let's just agree the book was better than the movie.

I'm sorry.  I can't do that.  I haven't read the book, and I'm sure as hell not going to bother with the movie.

A Clockwork Orange was a phenomenal book. The movie isn't as good, naturally, but Kubrick did a good job with it, while adding a typically Kubrick-like style and pace to the story-line. None of the gloss and shine of more recent anti-social movies, hence IGY's dislike.

Its cult-ish following is a result of ignorant people being more prone to watch a movie than read a book. They see extreme behavior and think 'I'll be awesome if I pretend that I want to act like that' but in doing so they miss the whole point of the story. Anyway, the movie is worth watching simply because Alex is an all-time great movie anti-hero.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

To my knowledge, SD never makes comments about movies that are more than 20 years old being 'unwatchable' simply because they're old, but if you're gonna get all huffy and sensitive about it I'll take back my observation about your movie tastes. I really don't care.

Obligatory mention of SD's love of Star Wars.
