A little surprised it wasn't Latimer there but I like Matthews a lot.  Production + measurables and facing tons of strong coverage.

Matthews was valued where he went though.  He can play.  You can talk about upside but he produced in the best conference in football and has good size and ran a good 40.  Not sure this fits the talking point of taking a good guy who isn't that talented.
Title: Re: Jordan Matthews, WR, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on May 09, 2014, 09:26:55 PM
fits it perfectly actually....doesnt matter what he did in college...its how he projects to the nfl and in the league hes gonna be a solid wr who doesn't get much separation nor stretches the field but will be productive...whats really important here tho is two things:

1. length and size
2. will be great in the room and is someone who everyone wishes their son would grow up to be

pete prisco on the pick....i couldn't have said it any better:

QuoteI think there were better options, but Matthews is a good player. He doesn't play as fast as his time, but he will catch a lot of balls in that offense. Trading up with other receivers on the board is a bit of a mystery.

totally different body type but as far as his overall game it isnt going to be drastically different from mack...with the exception of going up and getting a ball because of height and long arms....he gonna be a productive guy but not scare anyone

Title: Re: Jordan Matthews, WR, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: SD on May 10, 2014, 08:59:46 AM
Overall I like the pick

Watched as much Matthews and Huff video as I could this morning while I was taking a dump. Matthews is bulkier than I thought. He plays like a big wr. He catches the ball really well in coverage and knows how to use his size. He doesn't get great separation. He's fast in open space but he runs slow routes.

Huff might work well because Chip knows his to use him. He is pretty average overall. Reminds me more of a RB than a wr. His mom tried to bash his head in with a 2x4...so there's that too

In the history of the SEC there's Jordan Matthews and then every other player ever in terms of productivity.  And he did it without an excellent quarterback throwing to him.

I'll say it again... LOVE.  THIS.  PICK.

again you cant put to much emphasis on college stats....thats not how the nfl drafts works

Title: Re: Jordan Matthews, WR, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: Rome on May 10, 2014, 09:55:29 AM
We should just ignore what he did on the field for four years and focus on how he performed in a cone drill in Indianapolis.  Got it.

Title: Re: Jordan Matthews, WR, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on May 10, 2014, 10:46:58 AM
you arent looking at what he did on the field you are looking at his stats

should we ignore them totally....probably not....but college stats are incredibly skewed when it comes to transitioning to the nfl

production in the nfl draft means more as you move along in rounds....the earlier you draft the more things like talent size and measurables matter
Title: Re: Jordan Matthews, WR, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: Rome on May 10, 2014, 10:57:51 AM
I understand it's not an exact science and previous performance in college isn't the sole predictor of future performance.  If it were then Brandon Graham would be celebrating his fourth straight Pro Bowl appearance and Jerome McDougle would be being prepped for his induction into the Eagles Ring of Honor.

The guys they've taken fit Chip's model for players and judging from the players they've gotten in the last two drafts I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt here.  I'm still salty about the first pick because I believe they could have gotten better value by going up a bit, but all we can do is * hope * they got it right.  Sooner or later they're bound to hit the jackpot on some of these clowns they're picking, right?

i have no problem with anyone doing this as long as they don't use it as a reason to kill someone else for saying these players as indivduals arent great picks

its whats going to make the next few years so incredibly fascinating...to see how this philosophy of body type and humanism versus talent and individualism plays out

There was a Vandy game I was watching last year where Matthews just took over. I don't recall who it was against (maybe Ole Miss) and he just dominated. I think that was the game where he was cramping really bad or something and he'd go down and out for a play and then come right back in to make a huge play. That's when I was sold on him.

Reggie.  That name sounds familiar.

WR.  Reggie....blanking on it.  He was an Eagle for a few minutes and then couldn't hang on anywhere else.

Brown?

What happened to him?

Last i saw he played for the bengals for a bit, then tampa, and game over.  He actually could be a valid comparison to what Matthews is coming in, except Matthews doesnt have the knee problems Reggie had.

i think a llama could catch 60 balls in chips offense....he will be a productive wr as long as he plays here and perhpas anywhere else as well.....but the best WR ever talk is a little much

what is really hard to project and the X factor is how much does he get in the end zone...he scores 9-10 td's a year then obviously he goes to another level

Of course you can.  It happens every year.   You can't stick in the NFL without it, but damn sure you can get in on talent alone.  Plenty of college players were the best on every team they were ever on, including college, and didn't have to work much for it.  They cruise through until they get to the pros, and then shtein gets real.

You don't become Jerry Rice without work ethic, true.

You do become FredEx or Titus Young, or any number of other players who were literally better football players than anyone on their team, or on opposing teams, with perhaps two or three exceptions, until they landed in the NFL.

I'm surprised you disagree.  How anyone could think that the guys drafted each year got there on hard work, confuses me.

Sammy Watkins: 45rec, 649yds, 5tds
Mike Evans: 46rec, 794yds, 7tds
Brandin Cooks: 53rec, 550yds, 3tds
Kelvin Benjamin: 52rec, 768yds, 8tds
Marques Lee: 13rec, 141yds, 0tds

what stands out there is how much the nfl has changed....first round wr's used to have to wait till like year three to start putting up numbers like those....the league is a video game now

also i think marquis lee is the only wr on that list id take matthews over...of course its not 100% fair to compare the X and Y

Yup.  Occasionally you'd get a guy like Moss who could tear shtein up right away, but WR and QB were 2 positions that required a year or 2 of "grooming" before they'd get significant playing time.  The mindset used to be that  RBs can start right away but QB and WR needed time to learn.  The league rules have shifted so dramatically to favor the passing game that you've got a surplus of rookie QB and WR making impacts from day 1.

Quotealso i think marquis lee is the only wr on that list id take matthews over...of course its not 100% fair to compare the X and Y

Eh, it's hard to say.  I think any of those guys would look really good in Chip's offense.

I totally misread that comment......for some reason I thought you were saying that Lee was the only guy you'd take over Matthews.  Not sure how I jumbled that one up.....probably due to my being an idiot.

Watkins or Beckam in this offense would give me infinite bonerz.

I'd take Matthews over Lee, has nothing to do with stats I just think he's really mediocre. In a normal world I'd rather have Benjamin over Matthews, in Chip's offense I'd take Matthews. He runs better in space and is more physical. Benjamin can go up and catch passes with the best of them but he's not as good in space.

I wanted Evans or OBJr going into the draft.  Evans has outperformed even what I expected and Beckham is going to be insane - I think if used correctly maybe best WR in the class.

Matthews has been fine.  No problem with him besides random drops, but his ceiling isn't the same as most on that list.

thats what i mean by it not being really fair to compare the slot to the outside...benjamin isnt expected to run in space...and matthews isnt being told to go up and get balls or run down the field.....overall tho it think benjamin has a much bigger upside....matthews i think can always be really productive but benjamin can be a game changer
Title: Re: Jordan Matthews, WR, Philadelphia Eagle

I wouldn't want Lee, mostly because of injury concerns. If Benjamin was a good camper type pretty good chance Chip would have taken him if he could. Nice compilation of stats SD, I've been wondering how they all compare. It also has to be taken into account that Matthews has been on a team that may by the end of the season have 100 - 200 more plays than some other teams like the Bucs, Bills and Panthers. That skews the numbers a bit, but of course Matthews was drafted later so maybe it evens out.

Makes sense, he knows the system and him and Wentz are tight. I was glad when they got rid of him because I thought Wentz was too comfortable throwing to him over the middle instead of trying to stretch the field, but in this current predicament he's as good as they're going to get.
