lets say you download a seven minute song...and the first three minutes of it is an awful intro of some sort...is there a computer program out there...preferably a free one...that can edit the file and take out the intro so that when you burn the mp3 to a disc it will just be the song itself

Real Player.  When you download it, you also get Real Converter (allows you to convert audio/video file types, duh) and Real Trimmer which allows you to cut/trim the length of audio and video files.  Double Duh.

F to the izzeR, E to the izzE.

Also, fyi.....Real Player has a download option that will download audio/video from the net to your computer.  So all those hip hop videos you watch on youtube can be yours forever.  Just scroll your mouse over the video and a "download video" button will appear in the top right corner of the video.  Click it and it puts it on your computer for you.  That's how I get all my pRon.

real.com

It's a media player just like Windows Media Player that comes on your computer.....but it's better.  It's a free download but there's also a paid version that gives you a lot more options.  You shouldn't need the paid version for what you want though.

I've used Audacity for a few years. No complaints here.

Not sure how long they've offered the additional converting or trimming options but I've had them 2 or 3 years. I pull videos from YouTube and porn from various sites and then use the converter so I can play them on my iPod/iPad. I also record stuff from tv and use the trimmer to get rid of commercials. I've got quite a few 30 for 30 episodes and most every eagles game from the last 2 seasons.

yeah you are way above my realm of expertise now...i just wanna edit the songs i burn onto my mix cd's...my big technological advancement of the last ten years was realizing i could plug an mp3 player into my boombox to get beats at tailgate rather than have to switch cds every hour and burn thru a hundred d batteries a game

and this just happened last year

Hahaha....it's really not that complicated.  I'm no computer geek either and this is stuff I just sort of dumbed myself into, pretty much like everything else in life.

How would I rig up my cube at work so every time I walk in the theme song from The Greatest American Hero would start to play?

step 1.  Steal the laser trip wire from someone's automatic garage door opener.

step 2.  Report back.

Get or build a USB foot pedal. Set it up to play that MP3 whenever you hit it. Hit it whenever you walk into your cube.

Great idea...I was thinking motion detector, but that's much better since it circumvents the possibility of someone setting it off as they walk by. So it's as easy as just running that to an mp3 player playing through speakers? Sucks I'm going to have to wait until April 1st to mitigate the risk of being fired.

G_F, I'll have to use your idea if thumbtacks somehow aren't strong enough to hold up the "lasers"
